Universities and The Parish Pump
Is now the “hyper-local” moment for universities?
NESTA – “Destination Local”Carnegie Trust… “Neighbourhood News”
• decline of local press?• demise of regional television….rise of local tv• “digital revolution” - falling cost of entry;• convergence and cross platform
A question of audience?

The Parish Pump
The vacuum – a role for universities?
“Universities would be able to act as incubators to develop new models of public service reportage for the digital era and act as an attempt to both redesign and rethink local news provision with both a civic role and a – clearly needed – civic place.”
Roy Greenslade (2012) in What do we mean by
local? Eds John Mair, Neil Fowler & Ian Reeves
……but a realistic business model?

CHALLENGES - PHASE 3: Sept.13 – April 14
Key challenges ahead:
• Programme making: refresh rate and varied schedule – can we make enough in the timescale?
• Outreach – will the films engage the local community?
• Silent Storytelling - student work will be variable
• Red Balloon to support and offer ‘gold standard’ service for some clients • Compliance – Mixed/trapped audience from young children to the
elderly – content must be appropriate for all.

2. Managing stakeholders
3. Student skills

WHAT WE HOPE TO FIND OUT
1. Is this model sustainable?
2. Does the fusion of professional practice, student learning and university research really work?
3. Can this model of flexible learning be applied elsewhere?
