‘Iran Will ‘Do Its Best’ To Secure Nuclear Deal’GENEVA: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday his country would “do its best” to secure a nuclear deal as Tehran and Washington held crunch talks on the long-running dispute. Senior negotiators from both camps met behind closed

doors for a second day of talks at Geneva’s upscale Hotel President Wilson, which was sealed off to the media. The meeting is part of a fresh diplomatic drive in the face of a looming July 20 deadline for a final deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers. “Iran will do its best for a final deal with the P5+1,” said Rouhani, a former nuclear negotiator, speaking in Turkey. The self-declared moderate was elected president last year, succeeding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and has launched a drive to mend fences with the West. “Iran is ready to sit at the negotiating table for a solution” to both the nuclear dispute and “unfair sanctions”, he said. After over three hours of talks on Tuesday morning, Iran’s deputy foreign minister and nuclear point-

man Abbas Araqchi said the climate was “positive”. Washington warned of “tough choices” as fellow P5+1 members try to build momentum in the crunch negotiations. The US-Iran meeting began on Monday with a five-hour session, the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that American and Iranian negotiators have held direct, official nuclear talks. The two sides have met informally, notably in a secret session last year in Oman which helped coax Tehran back to the negotiating table. They have also sat down together within the P5+1 process. The P5+1 comprises the five permanent UN Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany. They secured an interim deal with Iran in November after marathon talks in Geneva. The deadline for a final accord was July 20, but several players including Iran have already said a six-month extension may be needed. Washington and the other P5+1 states are seeking solid commitments that will ensure Iran’s stated desire for a peaceful atomic energy programme is not a covert attempt to build a nuclear bomb. For Iran, the goal is to make a leap towards ending the international sanctions, notably those imposed by the United States.

Thai Beauty Queen Gives Up CrownBANGKOK: Thailand’s contender for the Miss Universe beau-ty pageant has relinquished her crown after she allegedly called for supporters of the ousted govern-ment to be “executed”, sparking a social media furore. A tearful Weluree Ditsayabut, 22, said she was giving up the chance to represent her country after a barrage of online criticism upset her family. She was accused of calling for “the execution” of the “damn Reds”—a reference to the “Red Shirt” followers of former premier Yingluck Shinawatra and her family, which has won every Thai election since 2001.“The land of Thailand is dirty because of people who want to get rid of the monarchy,” she was quoted as writing. The remarks, made on her Facebook page late last year, have since been removed. At the time protesters were massing on Bangkok’s streets call-ing for the resignation of Ms Yingluck, in a political crisis that culminated in a coup carried out by Army Chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha on May 22. Thailand has been torn apart by a bitter di-vision since Ms Yingluck’s elder brother Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire tycoon-turned-populist politician, was removed in an earlier army takeover in 2006. Political opinions of any kind can be highly inflammatory to the other side. Thailand’s rup-ture roughly pits the Shinawatra-supporting northern portion of the country against the Bangkok-based establishment and its backers within the military.

Terrorism To Be Crushed With Iron HandISLAMABAD: The civil and military leadership on Tuesday expressed the resolve that terrorism in the country would be crushed with an iron hand, thereby, adopt-ing a unanimous stand on terrorism. The decision in this regard was taken during a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Commit-tee on National Security (CCNS) chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. The meeting reviewed the law and order situation in the country and decided to launch a comprehensive operation against the militants, as the talks could not bear any fruit. Sources said that the security situation of Karachi after the terrorist attack on the Jinnah International Airport and that of Balochistan was also discussed by the civil-military leader-ship. Matters relating to internal and regional security, includ-ing Fata, Karachi and Balochistan, were discussed. The meet-ing was attended by Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad and Major Gen-eral Nasir Dilawar Shah. Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi were also present. Defence Minister Kha-waja Asif and ISI chief Zaheer-ul-Islam were not present at the meeting. The recent terrorist attacks on security forces and national installations claimed by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) came under discussion.

B.C. Teachers’ Union Votes For All-Out StrikeVANCOUVER -- British Columbia’s teachers’ union has voted 86 per cent in favour of a full-scale strike, although its president said a decision has not yet been made to move towards a full-scale walkout. In releasing the re-sults late Tuesday night, Jim Iker said his members still want a deal with the government by the end of June, or sooner if possible, and he asked families to contact their elected officials in the provincial legislature and even on school boards to demand change from the provincial government. The union said 33,387 teachers cast ballots Monday and Tuesday, and 28,809 voted in favour of escalating job action. The union is now obligated to give three days’ notice before teachers walk off the job, meaning a notice issued early Wednesday could result in a strike beginning Monday. “Even if we make the decision to escalate, we will provide three days working notice,” said Iker, adding that in the meantime, rotating strikes will continue across the province. “That means there are several days left before any moving to the next stage. That gives both sides a small and import-ant window to reassess their proposals, to reach a settle-ment, avoid a possible full-scale strike and end the gov-ernment’s lockout.” Iker said the union’s leaders will now look at timelines and discuss the issue before making a decision on the next steps. The earliest teachers could walk out in a full-scale strike would be Monday or Tues-day, he said. “We can avoid a full-scale strike and end the government’s disruptive lockout if this government comes to the table with a more open mind and a commitment to reinvest into public education.” Iker said the govern-ment has a proposal on the bargaining table that would wipe out class-size and class-composition guarantees, which the B.C. Supreme Court has twice ruled were ille-gally stripped from teachers’ collective agreements.Iker said the government also wants a contract that would see teachers receive no wage increases for two more years, which would bring to four the number of years teachers have been without a pay raise. “We see that as unfair and unreasonable,” he said. But Education Minister Peter Fassbender said in a statement the results of the vote are not unexpected. “While the BCTF leadership received the mandate they sought, no one should interpret this as any kind of enthusiasm on the part of teachers to shut down schools,” he said. Fassbender said the union needs to come to the table with realistic expectations.

In-SyncMalaysia Airlines Revival ‘Plan Ready’KUALA LUMPUR: The state fund that controls Malaysia Airlines said on Tuesday it will announce a plan within six to 12 months to revive the carrier, which is reeling from years of financial losses and the disappearance of flight MH370. Azman Mokhtar, head of state investment firm Khaz-anah Nasional, said “all options are being reviewed” by the flag carrier’s majority shareholder, including a possible sale of the airline. Azman indicated Malay-sia Airlines (MAS) had about enough cash to continue operating for a year, giving Khazanah some “headroom”, but he added a long-term solution was need-ed. “Obviously over the medium and longer term, this has to be solved on a sustainable basis,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. “As a national carrier, clearly MAS plays a very important role in terms of economic development of the country, but at the same time we, as the custodian of taxpayers’ money, have to balance that role very carefully.” Last month MAS said the mysterious March 8 disappearance of MH370 had a “dramatic impact” on first-quarter earnings. The carrier has launched a series of turn-around plans and austerity campaigns over the years but has continued to struggle amid intense industry competition.

Fifa World Cup: Sports, Diplomacy In FusionBefore the start of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil on Thursday, the Brazilian ambassador to Pakistan, Alfredo Leoni, made a trip to

Sialkot to see for himself where the ‘Brazuca’ balls have been made. ‘Brazuca’ is a friendly slang word for Brazilian.A total of 42 million balls have been exported from Pa-kistan in the months leading up to the world cup. Some of them will be used in the world cup and the rest at training sessions and games that

are played every day in cities, towns and neighbourhoods all over the world. “It is a great business to be in,” says a representative of the company that prepared the balls. “Now we just cross our fingers and hope nobody will blame the balls if they lose a match. Well, it is perhaps inevitable that somebody will do that, but we are confident that our products are of high quality. We have invested a lot in the recent decade to upgrade our machinery. Earlier, all balls were handmade but that is no longer the case,” he says. The small and medium scale industries in Sialkot earn Pakistan 1.6 billion dollars in foreign exchange annually. “When the dust settles on the stadiums in Rio, Sao Paulo and the 10 other cities in Brazil at the end of July, the same Adidas balls that were used there will also be made available in the Pakistani markets. No, the balls aren’t cheap but they are special!” he adds.

The Secret to Successful Budgeting

Making a budget is a marvelous first step, but far too often that’s where the fairytale ends for most people. Let’s face it, find-ing budgets online is only a simple Google search away. The issue most of us have is figuring out how the heck to stick to it! The reason so many people give up on using a budget is because the one they have creat-ed is far too rigid, intimidating, complicated and restrictive. Here are four quick steps to successful budgeting:

1. Attitude – First and foremost, your attitude toward creating a budget has to be healthy. If you think that budgets stink, then guess what? Your budgeting experience is going to stink! I usually have clients call their bud-gets something along the lines of a “Prosperity Plan” or “Wealth Building Map.” The title doesn’t matter as long as it gets you excited about manag-ing and mastering your money!

2. Purpose – A budget should have a defined goal you would like to achieve within a specified time period. Having a goal in mind will help you keep focused when your discipline begins to feel like deprivation. Once utilizing your budget helps you obtain a goal, set another one. Never be-come complacent when there is always a goal you can be striving toward.

3. Simplicity – The more complicated you make the budgeting process, the less likely you will be willing to stick with it. Your budget should fit where you are at this stage in your life. Forget what your married girlfriend with three kids is using. Yours may not need to be as intense. Just list what directly deals with your situation and eliminate any additional fluff.

4. Flexibility – The budgeting process is designed to be flexible. You should recognize up front that your budget will change from month to month, and will require monthly review. For example, if you go over in one category, then it should be accounted for next month or greater efforts should be made to prevent it. Remember if you must increase in an area, then some other area must decrease. At no time can you have more going out then coming in. If you want to spend more, figure out a way to earn more. Don’t get frus-trated; its basic math. Look budgeting is simple, but you have to remember that there’s not a one size fits all approach. The point of using a budget is to help you tell your money where to go instead of looking up and wondering where it all went. Keep it simple, stay positive, always have a goal in mind and you’ll begin to make progress with your budget in no time.

WILD OUTDOOR ADVANTURES IN DUBAIWe all know Dubai, right? Brash, high-rolling, seven-star a place to drop loads of cash and stay indoors against the heat. But Dubai is recently attracting adventure

travelers. Between October and May, when the weather cools, Dubai offers countless opportunities for action on land and sea, or in the air.

Prime hotel and residential real estate occupy large swathes of Dubai’s city coastline, meaning much of it is in private hands. One stretch of beach that isn’t off limits is in Umm Suqiem, a relatively quiet area of villas in the shadow of the luxury, sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel. In recent years this enclave has become a magnet for wake-boarders and kitesurfers. Intro-ductory sessions in both, from $55 per person, can be booked through: Dukite, +971 50 758 6992; or Mark Andrew Kite School, +971 50 886 0874

Climbing as a pastime in the U.A.E. and Oman has been steadily growing, with new routes being discovered and existing ones developed by a small band of ded-icated climbers and adventure operators. The Hajar Mountains rise to 3,050 meters (10,000 feet) at their zenith. The towering limestone crags offer a range of challeng-es -- from 3,000-foot routes up the higher peaks, such as Jebel Misht, to numerous shorter climbs and bouldering opportuni-ties. Around Dibba, on the east coast, you can even try deep-water soloing -- cliff climbing above the sea. For non-climbers, there are challenging hiking routes in the northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. The area is best explored on a guided hike; barely decipherable paths edge up cliff sides to high plateaus and mountaintops offering spectacular views across the plains below. High above the desert in these upper reaches are hidden tracts of fertile farmland, wadi pools and remote villages.Arabia Outdoors, +971 55 955 6209

Sand islands built in the shape of the world map, the world’s tallest building, luxury hotels resembling huge chandeliers -- Dubai’s man-made skyline is well-known from amazing images. For some, the best way to experience these 21st century landmarks is by jumping out of a Cessna and plum-meting toward them at hellish speeds. Jumpers take off from Dubai Marina and, strapped to an instructor, tumble out of the plane above the Palm Jumeirah for an instant free-fall adrenaline rush. Once the chute opens its time to relax and concentrate on sprawling views that unfurl as you descend gently toward the purpose-built Palm Drop Zone. Skydive Dubai, off Al Sufouh Road, Dubai Marina; +971 50 153 3222; tandem skydives from $545

Gravel plains, sand dunes and wadi beds provide the surface for all-terrain vehicles in Dubai’s off-road adventure terrain. Local op-erators take tourists out for stomach-churning dune bashing, with passengers gripping tightly as experienced drivers treat (or sub-ject) them to a couple of hours of tearing up and skidding down steep sands. If you want to take the wheel of a 4x4 yourself, there are good resources at hand. Armed with a copy of the essential UAE Off-Road Guide and a decent GPS, you can choose between rocky trails following a course of wadi beds, tracks winding up into the mountains and trails snaking across the sands. Arabian Adventures, Emirates Holidays Building, Sheikh Zayed Road; +971 4 303 4888; Morning Dune Drive trip from $53 per person Offroad Zone, Street 8, Al Quoz 1; +971 4 339 2449; off-road vehicle hire from $272 per day

The coast of the Arabian Peninsula has some excellent sea kayaking arenas, in-cluding areas of wetland that seem incon-gruous with the prevailing desert climate. On the west coast, kayakers can explore accessible mangroves in the emirates of Um Al Quwain and Abu Dhabi, where they can see turtles and flamingos. Over on the east coast is Khor Kalba, a protected 1,500-hectare area of mangrove forest that attracts important local wildlife. White-col-lared kingfishers and Socotra cormorants, both endangered species, make their home here -- paddlers can easily enjoy half a day gliding around calm waters trying to spot the rare bird life. Still on the east coast, more adventurous kayakers can spend any-thing between two days to a week traveling around the Musandam coast from Dibba, checking out coves and inlets and camping on isolated beaches. Absolute Adventure, Absolute Adventure Centre, Dibba; +971 4 345 9900; half-, full- and multi-day kayak-ing trips from $135 per person

Devoted mountain bikers who imagine Dubai as soft dunes and dust need to wise up -- and plenty already have. Within the Hajar Moun-tains running east of Dubai through Ras al-Khaimah emirate and Oman, there’s a laby-rinth of big-time trails to tackle. A hardcore organization of expat mountain bikers, Hot Cog, has helped discover and maintain 70 kilometers of wild routes through craggy ter-rain around the Showka area, incorporating narrow trails, wadi beds and animal paths. You won’t be alone: wild donkeys, mountain goats, lizards and snakes might all be encoun-tered along the way. With steep climbs and rough ground, tracks are difficult and not suit-able for novices, but offer a tasty challenge to experienced riders. Hot Cog has informa-tion on routes and joining a group ride.
