WEST YORKSHIRE HERITAGE
New Carved Rock Archive:
Recently WYAAS were excited to accept the archive for
the Rombalds Moor Carved Rock Investigation project,
carried out by Pennine Prospects. The archives contains
up-to-date records of almost 500 carved rocks, including
photographs and condition surveys.
In order to help to continue to protect these internationally
important monuments we urge people to submit any
information regarding damage to the rocks via the Rock
Art Monitoring form now available on Pennine Prospects’
website (www.watershedlandscape.co.uk)
World War One Project:
We are currently working on enhancing our records of
WW1 military and civil sites across West Yorkshire. These
include the former airfield and hanger at Headley Hall,
Leeds, Barnbow Munitions Factory, and the many war
memorials erected across the county.
If you have any information or photographs of
archaeological features, or historic buildings known to be
associated with First World War activity in our region
please do contact us and let us know!

HER hits 13,000 record milestone! We have been doing a lot of enhancement of the Historic Environment Record
(HER) in recent years, and just before Christmas we were excited to add record
number 13,000 to our database!
Hopefully come Spring we will have finished adding all our paper historic
building records to the database and these will be fully accessible to our users
along with all our archaeology records and fieldwork report collection. If you
would like to consult any of our records you can do so either by contacting us at
the HER directly, or via the Heritage Gateway website online.

Digitising our Aerial
Photographic Collection
Castle Stead Ring (near Bingley) is a prehistoric circular
earthwork & as you can see the aerial photograph shows that
only half of the monument is still extant, the other half having
been ploughed out.
For the past four months our wonderful
volunteers have been helping us to begin
scanning and linking our aerial photographic
collection of archaeological sites to our
Geographic Information System (GIS).
This is a really useful project because it will allow
our Development Control Officers to quickly
assess the condition and survival of the
thousands of earthwork and cropmark features
located within West Yorkshire, and help them to
provide accurate advice and recommendations
on any relevant planning applications.
