Digitisation of our archaeological aerial photographic collection is now complete! We are happy to announce that our aerial photographic collection has now been scanned and linked to our Geographic Information System (GIS). This project has taken us over a year and a half and has involved over 3000 photographs being individually assessed. What more, the project has been completed thanks entirely to the efforts of our volunteers (Caitlin, in particular deserves a special mention!). This work has already proved to be a really useful project as it allows us to quickly assess the condition and survival of the thousands of earthwork and cropmark features located within West Yorkshire. This information helps WYAAS to provide authoritative advice and recommendations on relevant planning applications. Another bonus, it that these digital images can now be used without causing long-term damage to the actual photographs. Marsden War Memorial listed by English Heritage As part of their First World War Commemoration Project, English Heritage have recently listed Marsden War Memorial at Grade II status. The memorial was erected in 1922 and was paid for by public subscription. One of the principal reasons for the monument being listed was that it acted as both an eloquent reminder of the tragic impact of world events and the sacrifice the local community made in the conflicts of the 20th century. Digitisation of our archaeological aerial photographic collection is

now complete!

We are happy to announce that our aerial photographic collection has now

been scanned and linked to our Geographic Information System (GIS). This

project has taken us over a year and a half and has involved over 3000

photographs being individually assessed. What more, the project has been

completed thanks entirely to the efforts of our volunteers (Caitlin, in particular

deserves a special mention!).

This work has already proved to be a really useful project as it allows us to

quickly assess the condition and survival of the thousands of earthwork and

cropmark features located within West Yorkshire. This information helps

WYAAS to provide authoritative advice and recommendations on relevant

planning applications. Another bonus, it that these digital images can now be

used without causing long-term damage to the actual photographs.

Marsden War Memorial listed by English Heritage

As part of their First World War Commemoration Project, English Heritage have recently listed Marsden War Memorial at Grade II status.

The memorial was erected in 1922 and was paid for by public subscription. One of the principal reasons for the monument being listed was that it acted as both an eloquent reminder of the tragic impact of world events and the sacrifice the local community made in

the conflicts of the 20th century.

New Early Prehistoric Enhancement project for WYHER:

We are pleased to announce that WYAAS has been

awarded funding by English Heritage to enhance the

West Yorkshire Historic Environment Record with

archaeological material from the early prehistoric

period.

The project will run for the next six months and will

involve visiting local museum collections to

re-examine archival material from former flint

collectors, as well as discussing findings with leading

academic researchers. We hope this enhancement

will help us to better understand our current

knowledge of how this region was populated during

the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as

provide a more reliable and authoritative guide of

West Yorkshire’s early prehistoric sites so WYAAS

can provide advice to future planning and

management consultations. Stay tuned, as we will be

updating everyone on the project’s progress via

Facebook updates, and when completed, the

project’s findings will also be published online.
