Dear Parents and Guardians We are rapidly coming towards the end of Lent and before long Term 1 will be complete and the drama of Holy Week followed by the great Christian celebration of Easter will be upon us. Last Sunday’s Gospel of the Parable of the Prodigal Son or perhaps, the loving and forgiving Father (Luke 15:11-32) prompts each of us to reflect on our relationships with others and our relationship with God. In this season of preparation the Church encourages each of us to deepen our relationship with God through a more attentive prayer life as well as through acts of charity and almsgiving. During the coming week, each of us can profit spiritually from praying over the parable of the prodigal son. I would encourage each of you to ask yourself which character in the story do you identify with and why. At various points in our lives, the answer to these questions changes. Many of us identify with the older son; like him, we have sought to honour our parents and to live lives of generous service. Such an approach in itself is good but when it leads a person to become judgmental and develop a certain hardness of heart, and perhaps even resentment, relationships can suffer and a certain distance develops. By way of contrast, many of us are slow to identify with the younger son who rejects his father by claiming an early share of his father’s estate, leading to a life of reckless living. Very few of us have responded in such an extravagant manner but all of us at various points in our lives have made decisions that have disappointed our parents, strained our relationship with them, placing them in the position of the father, waiting patiently, with an ever constant love and compassion whilst we grow and mature. The image of the loving and forgiving father is one of the most moving in the New Testament: “but while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.” This was beautifully depicted by the 17 th century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. The love of a father and the love of a mother are depicted in the different hands of the father embracing the younger son, who was lost but now is found. As we approach Easter, let’s pray that each of us will have the humility to acknowledge before our loving God the areas in our own lives that need to be touched by the Father’s compassionate and forgiving love. May we have the honesty and the courage to be attentive to both the younger brother and the older brother that we experience within ourselves so that we can truly experience the unconditional love and mercy of the Father. After all, that is the story that awaits us with the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection that is the gift of Easter. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with your family. It is always interesting to hear how families celebrate their time together. I have heard of the students speaking of camping trips, time at the beach, the parks, shopping, autumn cleaning, gardening, movies and the Moomba festival. Whatever brought you together, I hope it has been a renewing experience and you survived the heat! Recently, the College opened its doors to the public with the first of four open days to be conducted during the year. During my welcome to the families, I made mention that the guides for the morning were some Year 12 boys who had volunteered their Saturday morning to speak about their personal experience of the school. They do not have an adult with them prompting them with well-rehearsed lines about the benefit of a Xavier education. These boys speak from the heart. They are out of bed early on a Saturday morning because they want to share their genuine love for the school. I encouraged our visitors to ask the boys whatever questions they wanted to know about the school. I was quite taken by the overwhelming praise for these boys and our visitors wanted their children to be as articulate and passionate as these young men. This made me reflect on what is our hope for each student on their graduation day. On Valete evening towards the end of the year, Fr Renshaw SJ and I present our graduates with a document entitled a Xavier Graduate on Graduation. It states, “As you leave Xavier College, may your life continue to be guided by the following principles and values: RELATIONSHIP TO GOD

God centred “We are created to praise, reverence and serve God”—St. Ignatius of Loyola. Spiritual Recognise that the initiative for all that happens in me is from God. Reflective Engages in the Ignatian practice of reflection on experience leading to action so that one is transformed

into a truly integrated person engaged in the world. RELATIONSHIP TO THE WORLD Excellence in Humanity Seeking excellence in myself and encouraging it in others. Gratitude “We give thanks to God for God’s indescribable gift to us”—2 Corinthians 9:15. Integrity, Respectfulness and Responsibility Seeking and finding God in all things—St. Ignatius of Loyola. RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH Team member I belong to a community of faith with a single aim to be on Mission with Christ. Committed To search for the truth in my relationship with others. Just “To act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God”—Micah 6:8. SERVICE OF OTHERS Loving “Love ought to manifest itself in deeds rather than words”—St. Ignatius of Loyola. Compassionate In Jesus' words: “Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate”—Matthew 5:48. Generous Generosity was one of the most important dispositions Ignatius looked for in individuals—

“A Man for Others.” My hope is that these aspirations become a reality for all of our graduates at some stage in their lives. Blessings and peace for the coming week.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BURKE HALL Dear Parents and Guardians Each term I meet with my fellow Heads of Jesuit schools that cater for students in their early and middle years of schooling within Australia. The purpose of these meetings is to celebrate our Jesuit tradition, our heritage and the religious dimension of our schools. There is also opportunity for us to plan events for our students and staff to engage in academic, social, cultural and religious celebrations. An example of such an event is the Ignatian Leadership Conference, held each year for students in Year 6. Later this year we will be travelling to Adelaide, to be hosted by St. Ignatius College, Norwood. Last week we met at Redfern Jarjum College in Sydney. Redfern Jarjum College is a Jesuit Primary School for Aboriginal children in the community of Redfern and surrounding areas. Drawing on its Catholic heritage, and in partnership with families and the local community, the school offers an alternative learning centre to support children's transition into further education. Its mission is to share with students and their families the best of Christian ideals, in the Ignatian tradition, and Aboriginal values, in order to foster learning and character formation. While only a small school (24 children), it was a privilege to be an active part of their community for a day and witness their genuine appreciation and joy of learning. It reinforced my belief that students learn what they care about, from people they care about and who, they know, care about them. This week our Year 5 and Year 7 students enjoyed fine, warm weather at their camp venues, Cave Creek Hill and Anglesea, respectively. I am sure they join me in thanking the staff who made these experiences so enjoyable. Peace and best wishes,

HOUSE: ALOYSIUS

A focus of the upcoming Aloysius Assembly is commitment. When you are a part of the Xavier community, you have to be willing to commit to many different projects at the school. This commitment abounds when taking a tour through the school life of any Xavierian.

The Year 5 students are committing themselves to a musical instrument for the first time in the Middle School. This requires practice and dedication. Many students are taking part in this year’s production of Mulan Jr. The students will be working hard and frequently attending rehearsals to ensure a spectacular performance. Through sport, students strengthen their commitment towards others within team settings. Finally, everyone at Xavier strives for their best in the academic work they produce as an individual.

What will you be committed to this year?

Aloysian Tom Worsnop is a committed member of the Middle School Musical Mulan. Here he is, hard at work rehearsing.

Uniform All the boys who have been wearing their uniform correctly are to be commended. There are still a few who have required reminding about the importance of wearing their uniform appropriately. We are hoping that when the students wear their uniform in the way it should be worn it will create a sense of confidence, pride and self-respect, all valuable characteristics to exhibit.

Safety We understand the need for our boys to possess mobile phones and other hand-held devices. However, there is a concern that students are relying on them so much that their concentration when crossing the road is being affected. This poses an enormous safety risk. We are constantly reminding the boys of the importance of safety when on public transport and while walking or riding to and from school. Reading text messages while crossing the road is dangerous and could have devastating consequences.

Curriculum You would be aware that the middle years’ program offers a broad range of subjects. These include Religious Education and Personal Development, English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Latin, Japanese, French, Italian, Art, Drama, Music and Health and Physical Education. Teachers plan collaboratively to ensure the best possible programs are delivered to the boys at school. Our dedicated teachers are having a prodigious impact on our boys’ learning. Now it’s also up to the students to do their part. We want our students to succeed in whatever they do. Sometimes success is achieved through hard work and perseverance. We should remind the boys of the 5Ds – desire, discipline, dedication, determination and devotion. Boys are utilising the internet in such productive ways. One example of this is in Mathematics. A few proud students have been playing on http://www.hotmaths.com.au/. In fact we are fortunate enough to have a student who was placed first while another three students achieved top 10 in the world for a given period. These boys must be congratulated.

Connecting with other schools Last week we hosted a network meeting through the Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia (IPSHA). There were 35 deputy heads from 25 different primary schools around Victoria. It was an excellent opportunity to share ideas about best practice, to see what other schools are doing and listen to a guest speaker on leadership. We will be attending these meetings once a term in the future.

Last week saw the first round of outdoor education camps for 2013, with Year 5 travelling to Cave Hill Creek near Beaufort and Year 7 to Anglesea on The Great Ocean Road. Once again the camps provided the opportunity for the boys to take on a range of new challenges; from abseiling and canoeing in Year 5, to surfing, snorkelling and mountain bike riding for Year 7. These diverse activities are a way in which the Xavier boys are encouraged and challenged to step outside their comfort zones. Having had the opportunity to get around to the different camps, it was excellent to see the way in which the boys worked together to help each other face some fears and try new things they may have never thought possible. One memorable moment for me was at abseiling when one of the Year 5 boys, who was worried about heights, faced his fear and decided to give it a go. Having already made it half way down the rock face, he stopped, looked back up with a big smile and casually asked, "This is completely safe isn't it?" Another experience was whilst mountain biking with a Year 7 group. One boy was feeling exhausted nearing the end of the ride. Another boy stopped and waited with him, offering up the remains of his water, because the other boy had finished all of his. Whilst sometimes we can only witness small insights like this on camp, it's moments like these, which happen beyond the classroom that can be such powerful learning experiences and demonstrate the true depth of character of our boys at Xavier. Thank you to all the staff involved in what has been a great experience for the boys. David Gregory Acting Director Outdoor Education

Medieval Day Medieval Day has been by far one of the most exciting and fun experiences of the school year. The day was jam packed with activities such as archery, jousting, learning about weapons and armour, crime and punishment, playing games and juggling. It has sure been a trip back in time. Some of the highlights have been shooting an arrow towards a target, having some gruesome punishments acted before us and fighting with a knight from medieval times. Year 8 students were led through the activities by actors who were dressed up as knights, jesters and longbowmen. Some of the actors had made their own equipment, including full body armour. It was a fun way to learn about a very important time in history. It was interactive and the actors/instructors made it an entertaining day for all. We hope that this is an activity day that continues for many years to come so that future Year 8 students can enjoy the day as much as the Class of 2013. By Matthew Player and Nick Angus

PROMOTING INDEPENDENCE IN STUDENTS

Promoting independence in children needs to start from a young age and continue into the teenage years. Encouraging

independence in children is one of the best ways to promote self-confidence and develop resilience. When we teach

children to do ‘jobs‘ for themselves we demonstrate our faith in them and send a powerful message that they are

capable. In the IB, PYP, self-management skills are continually and consistently fostered. Our actions definitely speak

louder than words. The most effective way to promote responsibility in children is to give them responsibility:

Encourage your child to do routine household and family activities: eg. tidying bedroom before school, clearing

away dishes, preparing after-school snacks.

Encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her own home learning tasks, asking him/her to take charge of

their reading and get them to remind you that it is reading time.

Children can do quite difficult tasks if we show them how. Break complex jobs, like making a bed, into simple

tasks, from arranging teddies and the pillow, progressing to smoothing out a doona and so on.

When children can tell the time, teach them how to use an alarm clock so they can get themselves up and

regulate their own morning routine.

Encourage your child to prepare his/her own breakfast and put his/her own lunch in his/her schoolbag.

Congratulations to Burke Hall's Drama Captain Alex White (8 de Brito) who played the role of 'Chip' in the Senior campus production of Beauty and the Beast last week. The show was a complete success and Alex did an outstanding job. Well done! Congratulations to all students who auditioned for Mulan Jnr. Record numbers auditioned this year, making it very tough to select the final fifty cast members. Rehearsals are now well under way and it is shaping up to be a wonderful production, set to hit the EHPAC stage in week five of Term Two. Any students wishing to be a part of the show may consider being a part of the backstage crew. Please register your interest with Mrs Hamilton or Miss Hayes in the Drama Department ASAP. The BH Glee Club has recommenced this term with new and old members. If you like to sing and dance, come down to the Dungeons on Mondays at lunch time and give it a try! It is a great way to improve your performance skills, meet new friends, have fun and get fit. There are still some vacancies available. Mrs Andrea Hamilton Acting Drama Coordinator

Author Jack Heath at Burke Hall When Jack Heath was 13 , he started writing his first book, “The Lab”. He commented that he would never have thought that by the time he was 16 it would be published. On Tuesday 19 February, Jack Heath came to our school. He talked to us about his life and his career. He has a great imagination and many people would agree that he was very funny. I found him very interesting (and funny) and I thought he was very talented. He has written five books and one eBook. They include: “The Lab”, “Remote Control”, “Third Transmission”, “Money Run”, “Hit List” and “Dead Man Running”. I found him very inspirational. Parent Communication with the College

Xavier College continually seeks to improve its communication flow with all members of the Xavier College community. To achieve this end we ask all parents and guardians to observe the following protocol.

All telephone messages and emails should be addressed to one person only. If parents wish to include other relevant parties in the communication, this should be done under the cc heading. Observance of this list will allow the College to coordinate its response efficiently and effectively and thus contribute to a speedy resolution of any concern.

Who is the one person to whom a parent makes contact with? Over a pastoral / wellbeing concern, the Homeroom teacher should be the contact. Over a learning progress concern, the Subject teacher should be contacted. If the learning concern occurs in more than one classroom then the Homeroom teacher should be contacted. Only when these contacts fail to meet resolution or your concern is of a serious nature should the Learning Leaders or Dean of Middle Years / Early Years be the contact person. (You may, however, choose to “cc” these people on any communication you have with the College.)

Thank you for your anticipated co-operation with this request. All phone calls to Burke Hall Middle Years need to come through Reception on 9855 4100. All phone calls to Burke Hall Early Years need to come through Reception on 9855 4188.

BURKE HALL FATHERS’ ASSOCIATION

Greetings from the BHFA

I wish to thank the following fathers who have given their time (in some cases substantial) to allow the Fathers’ Association to achieve its goals. In no particular order I thank:

Stephen Lambert in respect to the Welcome Drinks and his preparations for the Beef & Burgundy night

Joe Giaimo & Mark O’Connell who have taken on the role of Camp Coordinators

Will Dobyn who has had his first meeting in preparation for the Maytime Fair As the new President of the Fathers’ Association I am truly indebted to the guys who are doing an outstanding job. The Fathers’ Association is a great group and I welcome all to join as it is very rewarding and, most importantly, fun to be a part of it. The Beef & Burgundy dinner is coming together and we anticipate it will be held in August this year. We hope to have over 200 attendees due to a great Q & A topic, fantastic speakers and a splendid dinner. The Maytime Fair is almost upon us and I will be calling on all Burke Hall fathers who can assist in manning either the BHFA Footy wheel or chip stall. I will provide more details as to how to get involved in forthcoming newsletters. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13 March 2013 at 7:30pm in the Burke Hall Board Room and I look forward to meeting new fathers who would like to get involved in the BHFA.
