Are you between the ages of 5 and 13? Do you like to discover fun ways to spend the winter? Would you like to learn some skills that you can use the rest of your life?

Be a Nordic Kid!At Winter Park we believe that children should have ample

opportunities to have fun through ski games and on-snow-play while learning to cross-country ski. This is what Nordic Kids is all about. Be a Nordic Kid!

Our program is divided into four levels, which gives us the flexibility to include children of all abilities. After a brief large group lesson each week, we break into our small groups to work on new skills, take a ski tour, or play ski games. Sometimes we’ll organize a picnic, treasure hunt or other special activity. This year, we’re planning a Nordic Kids Family Fun Ski Festival on March 2nd to close the program with. Be a Nordic Kid!

We meet at Winter Park on six Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm, beginning on January 20th. The cost for the season is $35 per child. Parents skiing along with their children can ski free.

For more information and to request registration forms, contact either Megan Rudisill at 358-5243 or Minocqua Winter Park at 356-3309.

27 Years of Growth and Activity

In 1981 the first Wisconsin High School Nordic championship was held at Minocqua Winter Park.

Because of frigid temperatures and brutal wind-chill the course was short-ened from its original 7 kilometers to a 3.8 km length. With 23 skiers, a champion was named and a tradi-tion was born. Through the years the championship has moved through many sections of the state; Wausau, Milwaukee, Rib Lake, Lakewoods, Iola, Telemark, Schwan Center at Spooner and Cumberland have all had opportunities to host. For 2007 and 2008 the state coaches association has certified the bids of the Rhinelander and Minocqua ski teams to host, with both of the venues located in Oneida County.

The two organizations have been in existence for a number of years and have had a long history of promoting and sponsoring cross-country skiing as both a recreational and competitive fitness activity for high school skiers and their communities. As the com-mittees in charge of two days of rac-ing begin planning, there are many details and decisions to be considered and finalized. Over the course of the weekend several awards ceremonies and social events will take place with

appropriate prizes and presentation. There are training days before and af-ter the racing to make sure each skier has had proper prerace knowledge and preparation. There needs to be groom-ing of the variable snow conditions that reflects each technique, freestyle and classical, The decisions dealing with awards have to be made months before the championship with both team and individual awards presented. All entrants receive a commemorative T-shirt as a part of their entry fee, de-signed by the host team. Preparations are underway for an expected group of 400-500 racers from over 20 teams around the state.

The first day of competition will feature skiers starting two at a time every 30 seconds using the freestyle or skating technique. The results from the Saturday freestyle event will then be used to start the classic pursuit the next day with the fastest skier being chased by the rest of the field in or-der of finish. Sunday will crown in-dividual champions in both classical and pursuit finish for boys and girls with team scores tabulated from the top three finishes per team from both days. Exciting high school cross coun-try ski racing will be guaranteed along with hard work for the organizers, and Continued on page 23.

Who can truly articulate what the natural world and fresh, winter air can

do for our spirit? As modern day life’s pressures and demands increase, more and more MWP visitors are realizing that their journey to the Northwoods can be as much an inward one as it is about escaping onto a favorite ski trail. Allow the beauty of Minocqua Winter Park’s boreal forest and snowy trails to renew your spirit. Join renowned artist and role model of health and wellness, Toni Polfus , for our encore creative skiing experience on Sunday, February 24th, 2008 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Bring a story, a poem, a song, or a reading that you can share with a small group on the guided ski tour. Additional layers or warmer ski cloth-ing is recommended As participants will be stopping frequently at special places to share insights and creative thoughts. Skiing outdoors is sure to stim-ulate your appetite. Following the morning trail tour, you’ll settle in at the Chalet for a gourmet lunch—

appetizers, spinach quiche, fresh salad, beverages, and dessert. After dining, Toni will lead participants in creating an art project that connects with the morning outing. In 2007, the theme was “Nekoosa” and the collaborative project now graces the Chalet interior. The cost to participants in “Ski for Your Spirit” is $25, which includes trail pass, guided tour, art materials, and gourmet lunch. Space is limited to 12 people. Pre-registration by February 15th is encouraged. Call Toni at 715-277-2025 or Winter Park at 715-356-3309 for more information.

Wild Tigers perform very well in snow country. ”I got some air on Squirrel Hill and did

an Indie Grab.” comments Jacob. “Did you see me do that awesome hockey stop?” asks Noah. Curious by nature, they are often observed investigating new trails in their territory. ”Beaver Pond Trail is my favorite!” exclaims Jim. “Nose Dive Alley is fun, too.” giggles Linnea. They like hills and escaping into the forest. ”Pinus strobus is a magnificent tree.” confides Luke. As they learn new skills and techniques Wild Tigers are patient and assist one another. ”Yikes! My ski just came off !” shouts Asha. “Don’t worry,” says Greta, “I’ll help you.” After vigorous play they can be seen stalking hot cocoa and preying on granola bars. “Yummy.” says Kalindi, most con-tentedly. These Wild Tigers are not feline, but ski-line, young skiers, kindergar-ten through 2nd grade age who usually accompany their older siblings (mem-bers of the Lakeland Nordic Ski Team) to ski practice sessions at MWP. Beginning Jan. 7th, the Wild Ti-gers Ski Club is open once again to all young skiers (K-2nd grade) from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Mon. and Thurs.

ski team practice days at MWP. (Note: The club is open to all, not just to siblings of ski team members.) Participants can expect simple lessons, equipment ori-entation, ski games, short trail tours, and après ski hot cocoa and snacks. The MWP Ski Shop has equipment rentals if child has none of his/her own. The cost is $25 per child for the season (includes trail fee, snacks, hot cocoa). Young skiers like the Wild Tigers are the future of skiing. Their involve-ment now is a step in the right direc-tion for winter lifestyle choices later

on. Thankfully, MWP’s local commu-nity is highly engaged in youth ski-ing and recognizes the importance of starting the kids early on. Ski Mom, Karen Turner, writes: ”Thank you all for sharing your time and talents with our children. Brian and Linnea thor-oughly enjoyed the nordic team and club. It was exciting for us to watch their skills improve and watch new friend-ships form. One side effect was a trail the kids forged around our home. This kept them happily occupied for hours, successfully averting any signs of cabin fever. Thanks again.”

If you appreciate candle lit dining ambiance, if skiing is in your heart, and if snowy trails aid you

in digestion, then consider MWP’s Valentine’s Eve Dine ’n Ski event on Wednesday evening, February 13, 2008 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Minocqua Winter Park has proven to be the perfect Romantic Winter Wonderland. In 2007, Skiing Cupid made a heart-stirring appearance as he lovingly dispensed rose petals and sweet treats. And a Nordic Kissing Contest ensued after a live lip-to-lip demo by Trail Groomer Dave Sconzert and wife, Nancy. Nordic love was in the air! Our 2008 Valentine’s Eve event promises to be another fun-filled eve-

ning for all ages, married or single, skier or non-skier. Diners receive royal treatment from the Klister Kitchen staff and the Lakeland Nordic Ski Team waiters and waitresses. Appe-tizers, live music, door prizes, Italian dining, skiing under the lights, ski-liscious desserts, and gourmet coffee are all ingredients, that when mixed together –culminate for a fun-filled evening. Recording artist, Sharon Iltis, will entertain with her distinct compilation of oldies and folk songs, including Nordic Love. Sharon’s latest

CD Today at Last will be available and on sale. New in 2008, Jody K’s Portrait Studio will be on location at Winter Park to help you create memories for a lifetime. Purchase your tickets early as seat-ing is limited. $20/adult and $15/student until January 31st. $30 and $25 each respectively thereafter if space is still available.

Minocqua Winter Park, along with Trig’s Cellar 70, Americ-

Inn of Minocqua, and The Minocqua Brewing Company, will be hosting its third annual wine tasting on January 26, 2008, from 6-9 p.m.

Although the wine tasting is not new to Minocqua Winter Park, it is new as a community event. Hosted at Winter Park for many years with an Australian theme and a potluck flare, it has now evolved into a community event.

Winter Park chose to bring the event to town two years ago to part-ner with the community and create more of a community atmospherre. This event draws skiers and non-ski-ers, community members and people from Eagle River, Rhinelander, Madi-son, Milwaukee, and some as far as Chicago. Appetizers are offered along with wine and beer, and at the end of the evening, those attending can take home their wine glasses!

For the third year in a row, there will be a silent auction. Back this year will be the drawing for an Old Town Kayak donated by BJ’s Sportshop. We are so fortunate to have such great support from our local businesses for our silent auction. It has gotten to the point that our donors say “yes”—no questions asked! We are going to try a

couple of new things this year to mix it up.

The event is a great way to enjoy wine and friendship while helping to raise money for a good cause. So, if

you are looking for a nice evening out, come on out and join us on Jan-uary 26 at the AmericInn of Minoc-qua. Tickets go on sale the first part of December.

How can you be involved in the excitement of Minocqua Winter Park? It’s easy. Check

out the list of opportunities below, fill out our volunteer applica-tion form, and tell us a little bit about your talents, interests, and experience. You don’t have to be a skier to find where you fit in at MWP. Opportunities await you! Mary Dunphy has been a faithful MWP volunteer and this is what she had to say about her volunteer time during the 06-07 ski season: “Welcome all readers of Cross-Country Skier Express. I am one of the many volunteers that assist skiers with trail passes, map in-structions, conversation, and other ac-tivities that make skier visits to MWP more enjoyable. One thing I like about volunteering is being able to ski when I am there. That way, I really get to know what condition the trails are in. Hope to see you participating in our volunteer program this season. Mary.” Sign up now to join the MWP team as a VOLUNTEER! We have a variety of tasks that we can always use extra assistance with. Most require little experience or can be learned with minimal training. MWP volun-

teer opportunities can be personalized around your strengths and interests. You can become part of the MWP ac-tion and meet some wonderful people along the way. Other needs may be of a seasonal

nature like preparing firewood, dec-orating for Christmas or changing outdoor signage. If you have an inter-est in a volunteer area not listed here, we still may be able to accommodate you. Your volunteer time at MWP is a gift that is valued and appreciated.

Written by Ellen Gordon, 15, Sophomore at Palatine High School in Palatine, Illinois

When my mom told me that Keith wanted me to write an article about my

experiences at Minocqua Winter Park (MWP), I thought, “Great, I’ll start out by writing about the first time I came to MWP.” The only problem was that I’ve been coming to Winter Park for so long, that I couldn’t even remember the first time I was there. My mom tells me that we came for a weekend in February, 1995 when I was 2 years old with my mom’s boyfriend who loved cross country skiing. Even though my mom and her boyfriend broke up, she had fallen in love with skiing and MWP, so we

started coming back to MWP to ski. In December, 1995 when I was 3 years old we came up for again for three days and then came back again in February,

1996 for a weekend. On our December, 1995 trip I took my first lesson with an instructor from the ski shop. By the time I was 4 years old we started coming up to MWP much more – winter break, holiday weekends, and any other

weekend my mom could get away. In February, 1996 I skied the Base Loop for the first time on my own and got my fluorescent green Base Loop certificate. I was so proud of it that when we came home I made my mom immediately hang the certificate on my bedroom wall. That year I also skied in my first “Beat the Bunny” race. I was so excited because I actually did beat that bunny; even if she had to get lost and turn around for me to beat her! Most of the time when I come up to MWP, I take a ski lesson so that I can improve my skiing skills. By the time I was 6 years old I started skiing on some of the shorter trails (Base Loop and Silver Strider) without an instructor or my mom. I also began skiing with Nordic Kids whenever we were at MWP when Nordic Kids was

skiing. Even though we couldn’t ski with the group all the time, they still let me ski with them. One of my favorite things about MWP is that there are a lot of different trails for a variety of levels. There is always a trail for me to ski on no matter what type of trail I’m in the mood for; flat or hilly, hard or easy. Every year when we come up in December my mom buys me ski equipment for a Hanukkah present. When I was 6, I got my first pair of poles, when I was 7, I got my first pair of combi skis, and when I was 10, I got my first pair of skate skis. All of my equipment comes from the helpful and conveniently located ski shop. I love the warm, inviting atmosphere of MWP and its chalet. Since I started skiing thirteen years ago, I’ve been to many different places to ski and none of them have chalets that come even close to the warmth of the MWP chalet. We love the great café and every time we come we make sure NOT TO bring lunch so that we have an excuse to get the belly warming chili. We’ve also met many different people. Every one who skis at MWP is extremely friendly no matter where they live, how often they ski, or their ski level. We have become good friends with many of the people we have met skiing at MWP. We have even started coming up to the Northwoods at other times of year, for hiking, kayaking and just hanging out. We love eating at Island Café, the bread at La Baguette can’t be beat and I’ve started stamping note cards because one time we stopped in at The Baker’s Wife. Because of MWP, I’ve learned how to cross country ski and have fallen in love with skiing, we’ve made good friends, and enjoy spending time in the Northwoods. No matter where else I ski I always want to keep coming back to Minocqua Winter Park because for me no other place compares.

Wisconsin High School Nordic Ski ChampionshipsContinued from page 7.a source of pride and accomplishment by the community.

The Lakeland Nordic Ski Team in 2008 will use Minocqua Winter Park Nordic Center as the site for the 27th annual high school championships. Racing will begin Saturday, Febru-ary 9 and conclude using the pursuit format the following day with plenty of drama as classic and freestyle tech-niques will be tested as well as the conditioning of the athletes.

The course will follow a similar profile to the Lakeland Loppet 8km citizen’s race held in March, which is also the same for high schoolers. The course has several variations, which will be modified to fit the 7.5 kilome-ter distance parameters for the cham-pionships and to provide for an excit-ing stadium finish. There will also be parallel trails that will allow access for skiing spectators who want to be close to the action.

Winter Park is looking forward to the return of the Wisconsin State Nordic Ski Championships to its roots; home sweet home, and all the action, excitement and pandemoni-um that a championship event with a high school cast will bring. Plan on a great weekend. ¤
