EDITOR’S NOTE

Namaste,

Almost a century ago, Yoga was considered only for the solitary – like monks and other religious

people. Its was wrongly understood that if householders took up this practice, they would abandon

their families. Yoga is more for the householder who needs the yogic equilibrium, state of mind at

every moment of his life. Householder yogi needs it more than the recluse because the

householder has to put up with the imperfections of ordinary life cheerful and yet share and teach

the finer positive aspects of life.

On the occasion of Shri Yogendraji’s birth anniversary, I would like to go down the memory lane to

pay tribute to our Founder who believed that Yoga could actually help improve the lives of

householders. With the blessings of his Guru, Shri Paramhamsa Madhavadasji, Yogendraji went on

to spread the secret knowledge of Yoga among the masses and spearheaded the ‘Yoga for the

Householder’ movement in the world. Born in 1897, Shri Yogendraji was an unassuming man of

untold yogic powers. It is for good reason that Shri Yogendraji is hailed as the Father of the Modern

Yoga Renaissance in India and the world over.

On December 25, 1918, Shri Yogendraji established The Yoga Institute which is all set to step into

its 100th year in December 2017! He conducted deep scientific research to simplify the tough

Hatha Yoga techniques for the benefit of the common man. Three of Shri Yogendraji’ books,

enumerating his research findings, have been selected by a committee of experts as the world’s

most authentic source of Yoga wisdom and preserved in the Crypt of Civilisation which will be

opened 6,000 years from now.

This month’s issue pays ode to our Founder and Householder Yogi. To mark Children’s Day which is

celebrated on14th November in India, we bring to attention the Institute's Yoga classes for

Children. Since Yoga provides a relief from the performance demands that the children face every

day on all fronts, many children from various schools enjoy learning and practicing Yoga at the

Institute.

Our practice on the mat helps us live a better life off the mat!

Pearls of Wisdom

Shri Yogendraji - Life extraordinaire

Shri Yogendraji propounded the

virtues of Yoga, especially its holistic

approach that explored the body-

mind connection. He told his students that

all those who have the urge to study Yoga

must come with an open mind. Only then

can it change their lives.

Shri Yogendraji’s life is as interesting as his

towering personality. His presence

commanded humble reverence. He was

headstrong, determined and outspoken.

Fearless in his approach, be it ministers or

the common man on the road, he dared to

speak the truth. One of the ministers came

to The Yoga Institute, and Shri Yogendraji

was candid about the spineless leadership

qualities he was exuding. At the same time,

his gentle approach in dealing with needs

of a common man and to resolve the

misconception about Yoga with patience

and poise was impressive.

Post India’s Independence era, Steel was a

hefty commodity, and special government

permission was required if anyone wanted

steel for any construction work. Shri

Yo g e n d r a j i n e e d e d s t e e l f o r t h e

c o n s t r u c t i o n p u r p o s e o f T h e Yo g a

Institute and he had applied for the same.

His request was rejected, and the letter

stated it is not essential. Shri Yogendraji,

without hesitation, went straight to the

government official and firmly questioned

“Are you essential? If you die only your wife

and children will miss you, but by not

granting the permission, Yoga and

h u m a n i t y w i l l b e i n j e o p a r d y a n d

thousands of lives. It is very essential!”

And the permission was acquired.

He established “The Association of

Libertine (Free-Thinking) People”, he

wrote, and he issued the Bible of the Yoga

Life, an audacious undertaking. This book

garnered much attention and was very

popular. Latest edition of this monumental

work is compiled in a book titled “Life

Problems”. Shri Yogendraji believed that

Yoga is an art of living. He wanted the

common man to be able to follow it. So, he

developed the breathing rhythm that

a c c o m p a n i e s y o g i c p o s t u r e s a n d

simplified Yoga kriyas without diminishing

their benefits. He wanted humanity to give

as much importance to happiness and

peace of mind as they did to material

comforts. As Yoga shows us how to find a

balance between both and enrich our lives.

He was a great teacher as well as a loving

father-in-law and doting grandfather. My

fondest memory of Shri Yogendraji was

when we used to go on walks with little

Patanjali. Some of my most treasured

memories are about how gentle and joyful

he was. It was fun to join him in singing

Bhajans too. He was very approachable,

and discussion on any topic be it Yoga,

asana, administrative work etc. was

welcomed. Objectivity and ability to teach

with patience is how I remember him.

Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra Director, The Yoga Institute.

Pearls of Wisdom

I know not how nature disclosed her

“secrets to me but I found knowledge

pouring in rapid continuity like a

waterfall. My hands were too small to

contain it and it is empty again as I give

them. And still it is my satisfaction that

instead of passing my life in the jungle

obscure and lonely, by certain inspiration, I

have been directed to reveal to the public

what I felt in truth about this science.”

The world will ever be grateful that Shri

Yogendraji became a householder yogi and

through his wife and family, the message of

Yoga has reached millions of households in

the world. We are one of those families

who have been blessed to be in close

contact with this noble dedicated yogi

family.

Just two days before Founder Shri

Yogendraji passed away, Mrs Desai and

myself were staying at The Yoga Institute

as Dr Jayadeva and Hansaji had gone to

Delhi for a meeting. At that time Founder

remarked to me that he would not be living

for long now. I was surprised with his

remark as I thought to myself that

Madhavadasji had lived for 123 years and

why Founder had made such a remark.

Founder read my mind and told me that

Madhavadasji was a yogi but he was both a

yogi and a householder. As soon as Dr

Jayadeva and Hansaji returned to Mumbai

that night we returned home. The very

next morning we got a phone call from the

Institute that Shri Yogendraji had passed

away.

My father had worked as an accountant at

the Institute for eleven years and he gave

us the phone message. At the same time he

told me: “Founder tapped my shoulder in

the morning and said, I am leaving” This

reminded me of previous times when he

had read my mind. If I had a problem, he

would suggest a solution during the talk of

the Satsang on Sunday mornings.

I was once in charge of a food exhibition

stall at the Institute and Founder told me

while attending the diet stall that meat

fibres are very difficult to digest for me.

After our marriage when we were at our

honeymoon I told my wife that I wanted to

become a vegetarian. I had wanted to be a

vegetarian for a long time but now I

needed my wife’s support. When we

returned home after the honeymoon we

were eating at the joint family dining table

where the whole family was eating non-

vegetarian and we had a hard time. But

soon we had our own kitchen to cook

separately and we have been vegetarians

for the last 45 years.

The best way Founder expressed his

concept of a householder yogi was by the

following statement - "Many mangoes fall

to the ground in the forest. The real price is

paid when they are brought to the cities”

From the Teacher’s Diary

An ode to Yoga Guru

Mr. Neriosang Desai

07 SATTVA NOVEMBER 2017YOGA

Today, on one hand man rejoices the

o p u l e n c e p r o v i d e d b y m o d e r n

instrumentation, while on the other land is

hurled in the abyss of deadly diseases.

Even youngstars are not exempt. So is

there any way out of this turmoil? Yes !

Ayurvedic advices and Yogic practices are

the answer to escape such disaster.

Unfortunately, the short sightedness of

today’s society neither understands the

depth of Yoga nor recognises Ayurveda in

its holistic form. Majority of people believe

yoga to be a set of various Asanas,

Pranayam and a few Kriyas. So, to keep the

body fit they practise Yogasanas regularly

and feel contented. They even clutch the

straws to find remedies for ailments

through these Asanas. True, there is a

definite benefit in the health & illness by

the Asanas etc., but the true use of Yoga is

not limited to this. The Sanskrit term ‘Yoga’

means to join, join with the Supreme

entity. Ayurveda also is regarded merely as

type of ancient medical system. Rarely

does one pay attention to its foundation.

The word Ayurveda is coined from Ayush

( l i f e) a n d v e d a ( k n o w l e d g e) . T h u s

Ayurveda means knowledge of life,

science of life. The ultimate purpose of

Ayurved too is attainment of the Highest.

The direction of both Ashtang Yoga and

Ayurveda’s ‘Swasthavritta’ is the same.

May be the words differ. The initial steps of

Ashtang Yoga’ are Yama, Niyama, and

Asana. Yama prescribes ethical codes of

conduct - how to behave with others.,

while Niyama are moral codes of personal

conduct. One who has conquered these

two steps would naturally attain to

emotional stability which can be regarded

as Asana. In Ayurveda, these issues have

been described indirectly as physical

verbal and mental sinful activities (Trividh

paapakarama). further more while

discussing such topics as Dina-charya

(daily routine activities), Ritu-charya

(Seasonal routine), guidance regarding

food and dietetic regimen, how to behave

with senses under control has been

indicated clearly.

In order to reach the Supreme it is

essential the body has to be healthy and

mind pleasant & pure. In the clutches of

Kaliyuga today, rarely would a person have

the desire to gain the Highest. But still

everyone likes to be happy and stay happy.

For this purpose also a healthy mind-body

is a pre-requisite attained through Yoga

and Ayurveda. Let us not regard Yoga as a

mere physical movements and Ayurved as

a system of herbs only. Let us understand

their great significance, utilise them fully

and fulfill the purpose of life becoming

pure and disease-free in it’s finest sense.

10 YOGASATTVA NOVEMBER 2017

hri Yogendraji broke new grounds in

St h e h i s t o r y o f Yo g a w h e n h e

preferred to call his biography “The

Householder Yogi”. Not calling himself a

Raja Yogi or a Hatha Yogi, not a Baba, or a

mystic he represented himself as an

everyday man practising the ancient

system of classical Yoga. The concepts

o f t e n a p p e a r p a r a d o x i c a l t o t h e

uninformed. A Yogi is generally thought of

as a recluse, a Sanyasi or a Brahmachari. A

Yogi shuns people, avoids rearing a family.

How can a Yogi be a householder? How can

he be married and care for a family at the

same time?

He had decided as he followed his teacher

Shri Paramhamsa Madhavadasji to Malsar

that he would leave the Ashram and his

study any day his own aged father

required it so. On the last day of parting

from his teacher a small emotionally

charged incident had occurred. The

teacher invited his best pupil into his

meditation room a very rare honour and

handed over a begging bowl, a symbol that

the recipient will take to a life of a recluse.

The Kamandalu (begging pot) that was

o f f e r e d w a s n o t a n o r d i n a r y o n e .

Hundreds attested that the bowl was a

wish-fulfilling one. Many had seen Shri

Paramhamsa Madhavadasji put his hand

into the bowl and got whatever he needed.

Shri Yogendraji refused to accept the

emblematic bowl to which the teacher was

surprised.

Shri Yogendra left the teacher and went

away. Many suspicious and envious minds

dismissed the student as an ingrate who

abandoned his master. But the perceptive

master counteracted this misconception,

and he visited Shri Yogendraji to impart

this blessing and wishes just before

Yogendraji left for Europe and the United

S t a t e s o f A m e r i c a t o s p r e a d Yo g a

awareness and education around the

globe.

A new tradition of Householder Yogi was

born and was consecrated by Shri

Paramahamsa Madhavadasji. Some years

later, Shri Yogendraji married Smt. Sita

Devi Yogendra and took up the full

responsibility of a householder’s life, along

with spreading the awareness and

teachings of authentic Yoga.

He recognised the many misconceptions

that surrounded the modern Yoga learner

and was against the pure commercial

approach to Yoga. The materialistic aim

and methods of conventional Yoga

teachers jaded him. He was acutely aware

and vocal about such “unyogic” characters.

He spoke of an apex body of Yogic teachers

in 1936 to control and direct the future of

Yoga. He seemed to have succeeded when

he had the pleasure to preside over the All

the India Board of Yoga around 1974.

He went through many hardships yet his

resolve undeterred. He set his own goals,

worked out all the details himself and

practically succeeded by dint of his hard

work. Whether, it was the printing of Yoga

books or the laying out of the garden, or

the construction of the building, it was the

same. Any work he undertook he tried to

do it thoroughly. He was a perfectionist

and could not tolerate deviation from his

plan. He was occasionally harsh on the

rolled by and he could be kind and would

forgive persons and things that had earlier

not come up to his expectations, but he

never changed his goals and ways to

achieve the goals.

As a result of over seventy years of his

work, Yoga became popular the world

over, organised centres came up in India

and elsewhere, books and magazines,

secret Yoga practices became available to

the common man. He set up the first

organised centre of Yoga in the world.

Inculcating a spirit of enquiry into this

ancient science and applying Yogic

techniques to solve some human problem

especially in applying Yoga as a therapy are

a few of his achievements, but the list is

exhaustive.

The Father Founder of The Yoga Institute

of Santa Cruz is no more. But just like a

lotus flower amidst the materialistic dirt,

this yogi remains a model of purity, peace

and joy.

We pay our respects to this remarkable

yogi who started it all.

Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra,President, The Yoga Institute.

Yoga healing for the knee pain

12 SATTVA NOVEMBER 2017YOGA

Name: Savitri Verma

Age: 72 years old

Profession: Homemaker

Health Issues: Asthma, back pain, severe leg

pain and knee replacement surgery suggested

by doctors.

Q: How did you learn about The Yoga

Institute?

A: I heard about The Yoga Institute from

my neighbour who is a Yoga teacher at the

institute. I was in severe pain and limping

since past few years. Due to personal

reasons, I did not want to go in for knee

replacement surgery.

Q: State your present age, profession, and

ailment

A: I am 72 years old, a homemaker with

grown-up children leading their own lives.

My illness progressed slowly and from

past few years leg pain was becoming

difficult to bear. Also, I face asthma attacks

which worsen my pain. In a year with every

s e a s o n a l c h a n g e , I w o u l d n e e d

hospitalisation. Government run hospital

trips and medicines were an on-going

process with little relief from excruciating

pain. I was advised by the attending doctor

to go in for knee replacement surgery

which was estimated at rupees three

lakhs. I was reluctant to undergo it due to

my financial constraints.

Q: Please share the particulars of any

family history of the disease.

A: I am not aware of any, but we do not have

knee pain history or asthma as far as I can

remember.

Q: How have you benefited from special

Yoga women regular class?

A : Yo g a t e a c h e r s w e r e c a r i n g a n d

attentive. They gave me a lot of moral

support and knowledge about taking

proper diet and doing my simplified Yoga

asanas practice every day. I was regular

and practised it daily. Daily walk at my pace

and food restriction helped me a lot. AVAV

(Ahar, Vihar, Achar and Vichar) four

fundamentals laid the foundation, and my

symptoms improved immensely.

When I started, my weight was 80 kg.

However, after two years of regular Yoga

practice I have maintained a healthy

weight of 63 kg. Yoga has helped me

immensely because now knee surgery is

not required. I feel more energetic and

losing the extra weight has been helpful.

The frequency of asthmatic attacks has

also reduced. Even if I experience asthma

attack once in awhile, my pump medicine is

enough to allay my symptoms. There is no

need to rush to the hospital. Also, my

medicine intake has reduced.

Thanks to Yoga and the care provided by

The Yoga Institute, I can walk on my own

feet without limping. My weight has also

reduced I feel happy and content that I

decided to come here.

Doctors at the government hospital were

surprised by my recovery and advised me

to continue doing Yoga.

Remembering Great Yogis

What age is regarded as most suitable

“for the study of Yoga?" The consensus

of the Yoga authorities admit of no

particular age limit for the study of Yoga,

and one can undertake its practice at any

stage and age of life. They categorically

state that Yoga can be practised and

perfected both by the young as well as the

old (yuvavrddhoativrddho).

Of course, no systematic education can

begin before the interest and awareness is

developed in the individual. Yoga accepts

this condition if the study were to be

successful. The nature of training ought to

depend, as it must in the scheme of all

studio, primarily on the physical and the

mental capabilities and requirements of

e v e r y s t u d e n t . F o r e x a m p l e ,

environmental adaptation for habituation

to universal ethical perspective and Yoga

measures of self-discipline bearing on

p h y s i c a l c o n t r o l , b e h a v i o u r a n d

personality could be implanted and

encouraged even from early childhood. It

could be applied safely as an involuntary

measure of discipline from as early an age

as the third year. The age between six to

seven years could lay the foundation of

pre-education of Yoga course.

As a voluntary education in the integrated

Yoga principles and practice of the

elementary but accepted universal ethics

(Yama & Niyama) — free from sectarian

bias and historical or geographical

e x p e d i e n c i e s o r

compromises—supplemented to physical

hygiene and to mental discipline, Yoga may

be undertaken or methodically imparted

with considerable benefit from the eighth

year.

Soon after the pre-education course, Yoga

education may be so graded then onward

as to offer the maximum progress aiming

at habituation. Adjustments to growing

age and individual aptitudes should vary to

suit the need and response in each case as

the personality of each individual is sure to

differ from the other. Successful progress

at all levels should determine the speed

and extent of further studies in Yoga.

What stands to reason is that if Yoga were

to be the last resort of happiness, peace

and enlightenment, why should it not be

the first? If it could endow all that is

c l a i m e d f o r i t — h e a l t h , h a p p i n e s s ,

equanimity, peace and realisation of

Self—the greater is the reason for it being

the first concern of everybody to begin its

study from the very day he or she comes to

know of it.

Session Court

While I was working for City Civil &

Session Court I barely got time for my

health. But after my VRS, I decided to

give my health a priority & joined The

Yoga Institute. Earlier I would feel

breathless after doing little work and

now I don’t feel like that even after

working for hours. Rather I feel so

energetic & positive after my Yoga

class. The teachers at TYI are very

helpful and are willing to give personal

attention if needed. The institute not

only helps us do asanas but makes us

better version of ourselves. Also, Smt.

Hansaji’s talks are very impressive.

I would like to thank Dr Jayadeva and

Smt. Hansaji is her very approachable

Divij MirchandaniSadhaka

I was always under the impression

that Yoga was all about performing

asanas. But, after joining The Yoga

Institute in 2010 and undergoing the 1

month TTC I came to realize that the

asanas and the postures is just one of

many divine aspects of Yoga.

I joined the institute when I was

battling depression. Here I learnt so

many ways to look at and to deal with

my i n n e r m o s t s t r u g g l e s . Yo g a

believes in the flowing nature of life

and that is exactly how it teaches us to

perform asanas - by letting the body

flow, by letting go of things that are

not in our control and letting life take

its own course while we focus on

developing our spiritual being.

I was happy to know that The Yoga

institute has opened a branch at

Andheri West -The Yog Fitness Studio

near my residence. I did not think

twice before joining the classes..

I was in search of something. I felt half

empty when I arrived at The Yoga

Institute. I didn’t know what to

believe, I didn’t know what direction

to go - When I came here I was open to

learning. I wanted to find something

real and that’s exactly what was

provided to me. I did my 1 month TTC

and the 21 Days Course back in

February 2017. During my time here

in February I saw a huge change in my

behaviour, my routine, my outlook and

my diet. Later I joined 3 months TTC

on my teacher’s suggestion. I want to

thank The Yoga Institute for all of its

offerings from my heart. Not only for

myself, but for everyone that comes

through the gates here in search of

understanding, purpose, realisation,

progression and self development for

a better quality of life.

Muito Obrigado The Yoga Institute.
