Allan Dean, trumpet, is a member of the Summit Brass and the St. Louis Brass Quintet and was a member of the New York Brass Quintet for eighteen years and the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble for ten years.

Involved in Baroque and Renaissance music performed on original instruments, Mr. Dean is a founding member of Calliope: A Renaissance Band as well as the New York Cornet and Sacbut Ensemble. Mr. Dean performs and teaches each summer at the Mendez Brass Institute and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

He has appeared at the Casals and Spoleto (usa) Festivals, the Banff Centre and the Orford Arts Centre in Canada, Musike Belinge in Sweden, and the Puebla Instrumenta in Mexico.

He can be heard playing both modern trumpet and early brass on over eighty recordings on ma- jor labels including RCA, Columbia, Nonesuch, Pro Arte, CRI, Musical Heritage, and Summit labels. He joined the Yale faculty in 1988.

Scott Hartman, trombone, received his B.M. and M.M. degrees from the Eastman School of Music and began his career by joining the Empire Brass Quintet and the Boston University faculty in 1984.

As a trombone soloist and with his various chamber groups, Mr. Hartman has taught and played concerts throughout the world and in all fifty states. He has been featured with the Boston Esplanade Pops, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, BBC Radio Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and National Symphony.

Mr. Hartman now performs and records with Proteus 7, the Millennium Brass, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Hollywood Brass, and the trombone quartet Four of a Kind. He has recor- ded for the Angel EMI, Sony, Telarc, Summit, and Dorian labels.

He is a clinician for the Bach musical instrument company and has served as a member of the faculties of Indiana University and the New England Conservatory. He joined the Yale faculty in 2001.

william purvisHorn

A native of Western Pennsylvania, William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career in the U.S. and abroad as horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator. A passionate advocate of new music, Mr. Purvis has participated in numerous premieres as hornist and conductor. Mr. Purvis is a member of the New York Wood- wind Quintet, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Yale Brass Trio, Triton Horn Trio, and is an emeritus member of Orpheus. A frequent guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, he has also has collaborated with the Tokyo, Juilliard, Orion, Brentano, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, and Fine Arts string quartets.

His unusually broad range of recordings includes the Horn Concerto of Peter Lieberson on Bridge (Grammy and WQXR Gramophone Awards); Paul Lansky’s Etudes and Parodies; Schoenberg’s Wind Quintet with the New York Woodwind Quintet; and Richard Wernick’s Quintet for Horn and Strings with the Juilliard Quartet. Mr. Purvis is a faculty member at Juilliard and the Yale School of Music. At Yale, he is coordinator of winds and brass and interim director of the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.

Michael Roylance, tuba, has been tubist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 2003. He attended the University of Miami and received a B.A. degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. He studied with Chester Schmitz, Connie Weldon, James Jenkins, Bob Tucci, Gene Pokorny, and Floyd Cooley. At Rollins College, he served on the faculty conducting the brass ensemble and later was appointed professor of tuba and euphonium at the University of Central Florida. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Seattle Symphony Orchestra and served as principal tubist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. As a freelance musician and teacher in Orlando, Fla., he performed on tuba and electric bass in a wide variety of ensembles. He was a member of Walt Disney World’s “Future Corps” and principal tubist with the Walt Disney World Orchestra. His career also includes performances and master classes in Europe and Japan. Mr. Roylance joined the Yale faculty in 2008.

Douglas Lindsey received his BM magna cum laude in music education and performance at the University of Arkansas. As an undergraduate, he was second trumpet in the North Arkansas Symphony and held the principal chair in the Civic Symphony of Northwest Arkansas. In 2008 he won an invitation to the final round of the International Trumpet Guild solo competition in Banff, Canada. He won scholarships from the same organization in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Mr. Lindsey began his graduate studies with Allan Dean at the Yale School of Music. At Yale, he was a founding member of the Atticus Brass Quintet, which attended the Aspen Music Festival last summer and performed at the Kennedy Center. While in Aspen, Mr. Lindsey took lessons from Ray Mase, Kevin Cobb and Louis Ranger. The quintet performed throughout the Rocky Mountains and collaborated with the American Brass Quintet for a concert series and the world premiere of a brass dectet by David Sampson. This year Mr. Lindsey won the quintet fellowship with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet at the University of Wisconin-Madison, where he will pursue his DMA in trumpet performance beginning this fall.

Praised by Boston Globe for her “simply dazzling” playing, pianist Mihae Lee has been captivating audiences throughout North America, Europe, and Asia with her poetic lyricism and scintillat- ing virtuosity. She has performed in such venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Academia Nationale de Santa Cecilia (Rome), Warsaw National Philharmonic Hall, and Taipei National Hall. Ms. Lee is an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and a founding member of the Triton Horn Trio. Her recordings of Brahms, Shostakovich, Bartók, and Stravinsky with members of BCMS were acclaimed by High Fidelity, CD Review, and Fanfare magazines. She performs at festivals including Dubrovnik, Amsterdam, Groningen, Seattle, OK Mozart, Mainly Mozart, Angel Fire, Chamber Music Northwest, Bard, Norfolk, Music Mountain, and Chestnut Hill. She has been a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Speculum Musicae; collaborated with the Muir, Cassatt, and Manhattan quartets; and premiered and recor- ded works by Gunther Schuller, Ned Rorem, Paul Lansky, Henri Lazarof, Michael Daugherty, and Ezra Laderman. She has recorded for Bridge, Etcetera, EDI, Northeastern, and BCM, and is the artistic director of the Essex (ct) Winter Series.
