Yarm Preparatory School Issue 573
Friday 8th June 2018
Head’s Message . . . It was such a joy to see our Year 3 pupils perform in their Informal Concert this week. They have enjoyed a full year of their musical carousel, receiving a five week block of tuition on a range of instruments. The concert therefore presented them with a chance to display their progress. I must say that the conviction and composure with which they all played was remarkable and a real tribute to their ‘can do’ attitudes. Being ‘up for it’ and willing to give things a go is a key attribute that we aim to develop in every Prep School pupil. I am always impressed with how eager our pupils are to embrace opportunities and how they take performances in their stride. It is a superb characteristic that I hope they carry forward beyond school as it can lead to the development of many skills, experiences and avenues to explore. Mrs Craven is due to start her maternity leave towards the end of this month. We wish her and the family well over the next few exciting months. Mr Richard Gooding will be covering Mrs Craven’s role at school for the duration of the Maternity Leave. Mr Gooding has much experience of leading a music department, both in the independent and maintained sector, and will no doubt ensure that all aspects of the music curriculum continue to flourish. Mr Gooding has been into school a number of times recently to meet Mrs Craven and is looking forward to joining the school a great deal. Should you wish to meet Mr Gooding about any matters please email Miss O’Hara who will be able to organise this on your behalf. Head’s Challenge: What three positive numbers give the same result when multiplied or added together?

Curiousity Emporium The Curiosity Emporium was all about the Olympics. We learnt about the five rings and the differences between the ancient and modern olympics. At the end, we got to do a fun dance! Edward L
It was lovely to welcome pupils from Layfield and Yarm Primary Schools to join in with our final Curiosity Emporium of the year. It was a really enjoyable hour and I'd like to thank Mr Davies and Mrs Speight for all the work that they put into it. It has been a really super year of Curiosity Emporiums and I am very excited about the ones that have been planned for next year. My thanks to all the staff who have put them on, and to Wendy and her team in the kitchen for the delicious buffet lunches, and to Mr Evans for setting up the hall for us.
Mrs Craven
Attendance at School Fixtures
A number of pupils have recently been unable to play in school fixtures
due to commitments outside of school. We expect all pupils to
prioritise representing the school and see it as a wonderful opportunity
of which they should be proud. However, if your child is unable to play
we expect at least 48 hours notice so that the place can be re-
allocated. Thank you for your co-operation.

Keepy Uppy Playing it, watching it, talking about it. He gets it from his mum – a footy fanatic! Joey can turn anywhere into a make believe pitch, from scoring goals in his breakfast cereal to imaginary match commentating on his way to school. His enthusiasm is shared equally by his Mum – the best teammate he could ever have. She stands on the sidelines cheering him on, giving him top training tips and teaching him new tricks. Life is busy for Joey and mum, but today nothing can get in their way as the big day has arrived; the high point of the season, the cup final and a chance for Joey to score a winning goal. They set off for the game, ready for ANYTHING.
Keepy Uppy is a play for the 2018 World Cup year, for football fans, non-football fans, children and families. Join us and celebrate the joy of the beautiful game with popping rhymes, fab footie moves, flicks and sidesteps underscored by toe tapping live music.
Speech and Drama at Yarm School
In the pre-prep I was a very shy girl but I wanted to grow my confidence so I joined
the Drama club. I enjoyed the activities so much that I asked for my own Speech and
Drama lessons.
Speech and Drama lessons are lots of fun; I get to roleplay different characters from
the stories I love and bring them to life in my own special way.
Our Speech and Drama teacher is amazing, she always introduces me to new poems
and books. During the lessons we practise expressing my voice through reading po-
ems and prose, I also get to share my achievements including what I have learnt in
Drama assemblies and festivals. I do my LAMDA exams at the end of each year. In May I did my grade 5 exam and
first Shakespeare qualification and I’m looking forward to getting my results.

Year 3 have had a very busy year of music making. As part of their music curriculum, they spend 5 weeks on a rotation of learning brass, cello, flute. recorder and violin. On Wednesday, they gave an Informal Concert which demonstrated what they have done on one of these rotations. It also gave an opportunity for some of the children who have 1:1 lessons to perform for a large audience. For some of the children, it was the first time they have performed in a small group, or on their own, to an audience made up of adults. It's always nerve-wracking, and they rose to the challenge superbly. My thanks to Mr Hibbard, Mr Smith, Ms Brookes, Mrs Burniston and Mrs Robinson for leading our Wider Opportunities sessions so enthusiastically, the visiting music teachers who put hours into preparing the children for concerts, and to Miss Haigh for accompanying the concert.
