YEAR 9 OPTION CHOICESAs part of the extended Key Stage 4 curriculum, students have already chosen two option subjects in year 8 which they have been studying since September. It would be advisable for students to continue with the option subjects that they have already chosen. Studying the subjects for three years will give students a longer time on their Key Stage 4 examination courses and we firmly believe that this will further enhance students’ learning, progress and achievement. If however students wish to change their option subjects they can at this stage.

WHEN WILL THE FINAL CHOICES HAVE TO BE MADE?Your child will complete a practice option form to help in the organisation of the options. Please keep yourself informed of the subjects that they are thinking of taking. Discuss and help in their choices.

The academy will be willing to help if you are having problems.

Year 9 parents will have the opportunity to discuss the options process and subject choices at the year 9 parents consultation evening on Wednesday 29th April. Appointments can be made with Mrs Davies or Dr Mason prior to this event if necessary.

Final option choices will need to be made by Monday 4th May.

LEARNING PATHWAY 1 Mainly GCSE subjects at Higher Tier.

Students on this Pathway will usually follow A level courses at Post 16.

THE CURRICULUM AT KEY STAGE 4Ormiston Forge Academy believes in offering all students a broad curriculum that provides a choice of different pathways towards further education and a wide choice of career opportunities. The mandatory Core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science,Technology, RE, PE are studied by all students. Additional subjects will be offered as options. Students will be guided along one of three learning pathways, depending upon their level of achievement over Key Stage 3.

ADVICE ON CHOOSING YOUR SUBJECTS1 What do I want to do at 16+

• Sixth Form?

• Apprenticeship?

• College?

2 Choose the subjects which will assist your intentions for 16+.

3 Choose a well balanced timetable. Try not to choose all of your subjects from the same department (only 1 art GCSE can be chosen).

4 It is best not to pick a subject you are poor at.

5 Do not pick a subject because you work well for that teacher. It may be a different teacher taking that subject in years 10 and 11.

6 Do not pick a subject you have not studied before because you like the sound of it. If you have not done it before find out as much as you can about it before making your decision.

7 Do not choose subjects just because your friends have chosen them.

8 Do not be afraid to choose unusual subjects.

9 Creative subjects such as Art/Music and the Crafts are very useful.

10 Do not specialise too much.

11 Are you more suited to GCSE or BTEC method of learning?

12 Seek plenty of advice and ask lots of questions.


SOME IMPORTANT POINTS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS• Talk to your son/daughter about what their interests are.

• Find out what they would like to do in the future.

• Let them know that jobs for 16 year olds are now virtually non-existent. The key to their future is in good education, good training and developing skills and abilities that employers want and are prepared to pay for.

• If in doubt about your son/daughter’s option choices, please contact the academy to make an appointment to see the Careers Adviser, Mrs Davies (Senior Leader - Logistics) or Dr Mason (Vice Principal for Key Stage 4).

• Check that your son/daughter is choosing subjects for the right reasons.

• Try to encourage a variety in their choices – this will allow more choice at Post 16.

ATTENDANCERegular attendance and good punctuality are crucial if your child is to fulfil their potential at Key Stage 4. We need them to be in lessons if they are to achieve academic success. Please ensure that your son/ daughter is punctual and that the school is informed of the reasons for non-attendance as soon as possible.

ELEMENTS

• In Section A, you will be asked one compulsory question in which you have to explain how Shakespeare presents a particular aspect of ‘Macbeth’ in a printed extract from the play. You will then have to explain how Shakespeare presents this aspect in the whole play.

• In Section B, you will be asked one compulsory question in which you have to explain how the author of the 19th-century novel you have studied presents a particular aspect in a printed extract. You will then have to explain how the author presents that aspect in the whole novel.

• In Section A, you will be asked one compulsory question in in which you will have to explore how J.B. Priestley presents a specified idea or theme in his play ‘An Inspector Calls’

• In Section B, you will be asked one compulsory question about a cluster of poetry you will have studied in class. You will be asked to compare a specified aspect of two of these poems, one of which will be named.

• In Section C, you will be asked two compulsory questions about two unseen poems, written in different eras. You will be asked to compare the unseen poems in the second question.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?All students in years 9, 10 and 11 study a maths course which leads to GCSE entry at one of two different levels – Foundation or Higher. Each course contains content from the four different attainment targets - Applications, Number and Algebra, Shape and Space and Handling Data. At Foundation level content is included up to grade 5 and at Higher Level up to grade 9.

PROGRESSION PATHWAYSIf you achieve the top grades in your GCSE you can access the AS and A level Mathematics courses.

CAREERSA grade 5 in GCSE Maths is of interest to all employers and educational institutions.

Many careers stem from maths qualifications including: teaching, finance, banks and building societies, technical and scientific jobs, engineering, medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

COMPULSORY

WHAT WILL I STUDY?All students study Full Course Religious Studies at GCSE. This is studied over three years, with one lesson per week in year 9 and two lessons per week in year 10 and year 11. It involves taking two units to complete the Full Course qualification, selected from Units 2, 3 and 4. The units taken by students will be selected by the course leaders. All units involve looking at different issues in the world today and religious opinions as well as your own ideas.

PROGRESSION PATHWAYSAS or A level Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics), AS or A level Classic Civilisations and other Humanities AS and A level options (History, Geography, Law, Sociology, Psychology)

To begin an AS level in RS you would generally need to achieve at least a grade B in GCSE RS and a grade B in GCSE English, with some C grades considered by the course leaders.

TO DO WELL YOU NEED TO:• Identify key content from the topic.

• Select religious quotes and keywords to answer questions.

• Explain how religious quotes and keywords apply to different issues.

• Explain your own opinion on different issues with at least two reasons.

CAREERSThe level of GCSE pass is generally of interest to most employers and educational institutions. Many jobs and college courses require a GCSE pass at grade C or above as studying it is a legal requirement.

YEAR 9 OPTION CHOICE - HUMANITIES OR OPTION BLOCK

WHAT WILL I STUDY?There are four themes of study in GCSE Geography:

• Natural Hazards – You will study a range of hazards including earthquakes, volcanoes, droughts and hurricanes and investigate their impacts on people’s lives.

• Rivers and Coasts – This topic focuses on the impacts of flooding and the management of river and coastal environments.

PROGRESSION PATHWAYSAS or A level Geography.

To begin an AS level in Geography you would generally need to achieve a grade B at GCSE, with some C grades considered by the course leader.

CAREERSGeography equips you with a broad range of personal learning and thinking skills such as teamwork, independent enquiry and creative thinking – all highly valued by employers.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?The course is designed for students who love Ancient History and English Literature and wish to gain knowledge of the Classical Worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome – their heroes and heroines, their societies and values, their myths and monsters and their epic stories and plays!

You will be offered a wide range of Roman and Greek topics including: The Iliad and The Odyssey, The Persian Wars of the 300 Spartans, Athens and Sparta, Greek Tragedy and Drama Festivals and The Ancient Olympics.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?GCSE PE consists of both theoretical and practical elements. The theory section covers Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise and Training, Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity. The practical section covers a wide range of activities including team sports such as football, netball, hockey and individual sports for example fitness, athletics, dance or trampolining.

PROGRESSION PATHWAYSAn opportunity to continue further study at A level.

To begin an AS level in physical education you would generally need to achieve a grade B at GCSE PE as well as grade C at GCSE Science.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?GCSE Graphics is so much more than posters or lettering. It is all around us and has a major impact on all of our lives. The course will discover the whole process of designing and making products from packaging and advertising through to product models.

This course has been designed to give students the opportunity to be able to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of graphic and modelling materials. We hope that students will be enthused and challenged by the range of practical activities possible.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?GCSE Resistant Materials builds on work encountered in Key Stage 3 and students work in wood, plastic and metal. A major part of the course is the acquisition of drawing and presentation skills.

Unit 1: Written exam The exam is a controlled paper, in two sections:

The first section requires designing and evaluation skills, working to a specification.

The second section focuses on the knowledge about the subject, material and components, tools, machines and processes. It also has an element of health and safety, sustainability and design and marketing influences. All knowledge will be taught throughout the two years and gained when designing and making course work.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?Travel and tourism is one of the UK’s largest sectors, currently employing over 2.5 million people.

Have you ever thought about how many different types of tourism there are, and how important the travel and tourism industry is to the UK economy? Do you know the major tourist destinations in the UK and the World? Have you ever wondered how you could plan a holiday?

In this course, you will gain an understanding of the range of organisations involved with different types of tourism in the UK and the World, including their roles, how they work together and how they use technology to meet changing customer needs.

Employment opportunities in travel and tourism include roles such as travel agents, cabin crew, conference and event planning, tourist information clerks or member of a visitor attraction team.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?Health and Social Care is an expanding sector. Currently across the UK there are many health and social care buildings that have been developed to cater for the health and social needs of people. Health and Social Care specialists are in demand and many students go onto work within the industry.

BTEC Health and Social Care is an interesting and engaging subject designed to give students an insight into the care industry. The course will help develop students personal skills in terms of communication and team work skills which are something that employers in this industry are looking for. You will also develop skills within literacy, numeracy and ICT within class. You will study two core units and optional units.

want to go into the care industry.
