This edition translated, with occasional notes, by Edward Underwood, with aforeword by Hamilton Schuyler. Roebling was a civil engineer who gained fame as the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. He and his brother, on land they purchased after emigrating from Prussia, established the town of Saxonburg as a community for German settlers. This book is his diary during that voyage,

This is the second edition, published seven years after the 1784 original, and including among its subscribers Vice President John Adams, Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams, attorney John Q. [Quincy] Adams, Rev. Jeremiah Belknap, John Hancock, etc., etc. The author, HannahAdams, was a distant relative of the political family, and according to the Dictionary of AmericanBiography most likely also the first woman in America to earn a living as a writer. This work was undertaken primarily to alleviate her financial situation at the time, and this second edition marks the beginning of her success in the profession. Fair. Binder’s copy.
