    Notes Leviticus 16:1-10 (TLV)

1 Then ADONAI spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they approached the presence of ADONAI and died.

2 ADONAI said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holiest Place behind the curtain —before the atonement cover which is on the Ark—so that he would not die. For I will be appearing in the cloud over the atonement cover.

3 “In this way shall Aaron come into the Sanctuary: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

4 He is to put on the holy linen garment, have the linen undergarments on his body, put on the linen sash, and wear the linen turban—they are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water, and put them on.

5 “Then he is to take from the congregation of Bnei-Yisrael two he-goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.

6 Then Aaron is to offer the bull for the sin offering which is for himself and make atonement for himself and his house.

7 Then he is take the two goats and present them before ADONAI at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

8 Aaron will then cast lots for the two goats—one lot for ADONAI, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

9 Aaron is to present the goat on which the lot for ADONAI fell and make it a sin offering.

10 But the goat upon which the lot for the scapegoat fell is to be presented alive before ADONAI, to make atonement upon it, by sending it away as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

    1. The Day of Atonement is the most important day of the Old Testament calendar.

Leviticus 16:29 (NKJV) – “This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you.

    Notes

Isaiah 58:3 & 5 (NKJV) – 3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’ “In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers….5 Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the LORD?

    2. The Day of Atonement may be the most holy moment in all eternity.

Hebrews 9:11-14 (NKJV) – 11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The earthly tabernacle is a copy of the heavenly one: Hebrews 8:3-5 references Exodus 25:40.

Hebrews 8:3-5 (NKJV) – 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

Jesus waited to ascend to heaven until after the resurrection. He was not in heaven between the crucifixion and the resurrection.

    • John 20:16-17 (Mary at the Tomb) – He came to the tomb for His body which includes His blood. Refusing to let Mary touch Him after His resurrection, He was protecting the blood offering at the Tomb;

    • John 12:1-8 (He lets a different Mary cling to Him at Lazarus’ house);

    • 1 Peter 3:18-19 (“preached to the spirits in prison”); • Ephesians 4:7-10 (“He ascended…He also first descended”); • Colossians 2:13-15.

    Notes

The Apostle’s Creed (originated between 2nd and 4th century) –

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy

Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the Life everlasting. Amen.

How did Israel commemorate Yom Kippur?

Two sets of offerings: one was for the High Priest and his house; the other was for Israel. High priest’s confession of his sin accompanying bull’s blood.

I pray, O Eternal [He actually spoke the ineffable name of God]! I have done wrong [to sin knowingly]. I have transgressed, I have sinned before Thee, both I and my house; I pray O Yahweh! Forgive, I pray, the iniquities [unintentional wrongdoings], and the transgressions [conscious sin] and the sins which I have wrongly committed, and which I have transgressed, and which I have sinned before Thee, both I and my house.

Leviticus 16:11-13 (NKJV) [About the sacrifices for the Priest] – 11 “And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself. 12 Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. 13 And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die. 14 He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. [NIV: “atonement cover”]

Leviticus 16:15, 18-19 (NKJV) [About the sacrifices for the people] 15 “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people…. 18 And he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. 19 Then he shall sprinkle

some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleanse it, and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

High priest’s confession of Israel’s sin as he offers goat’s blood.

I pray, O Eternal [He actually spoke the ineffable name of God]! Thy people, the House of Israel, have done wrong, They have transgressed, They have sinned before Thee. I pray, by Thy Name! Pardon, I pray, the iniquities, the transgressions, and the sins which

Thy people, the House of Israel, have wrongly committed, and which They have transgressed, and which They have sinned before Thee,

Hebrews 9:22 (NKJV) – Without the shedding of blood there is no remission. [NIV: “no forgiveness.”]

Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV) – It is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. [“NIV: “atonement for one’s life.”]

Recognizing the need for blood atonement,

    some Jews still practice “Kapparot.”

Conclusion: Thoughts to consider: • What does the Day of Atonement mean to you as a Jew? As a

Gentile? • Yom Kippur is Oct 12, 2016. Should I fast that day? If so, “Why?”
