Yonghoon SheenWork Samples 2013-2014
In Hanok School Hwacheon, Korea, I took a 6-month course that concentrates on building a traditional interlocking lumber structure. Not only did I learn about the techniques that treat the materials (mostly lumber) with such respect but also the process of construction: from pedestals to rafters.

STEM Elementary SchoolBlacksburg, VAThe focus was to design a STEM(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) school that demonstrates how a building comes together. The school concentrates on preserving the existing structure(closed down elementary school) to exhibit the evolution of the material usage and building techniques. The STEM school uses industrial materials (structural insulated panels) and has a green house on the south of the structure for passive heating.

The south of the school is a green house specifically designed to provide hot air for the school to use during the winter.

Passive heating/cooling in PulaskiThe town of Pulaski has been adapting to a change of economy and my studio took part in designing/renovat-ing selected buildings on West Main Street.

The idea was to create a path between the creek behind the building and the street while concentrating on heating & cooling by incorporating stack ventilation to the design.

The focus was to create a sun space for the customers, especially during the winter which will also store heat from the sun and gradually heat the air temperature that will go through the energy recovery ventilation system for the building to use.

Study of joinery, Studio project. The focus was on putting the pieces together without the use of nails which tend to damage the wood over time. The pieces are held by interlocking joints and strings.
Stool #22013
The iteration focuses more on practical issues than being just a study model. The entire structure is held by dove tail joinery and mending plates screws.
