    A warm WELCOME to North Yorkshire County Councils AdultLearning Service prospectus for 2009/2010.

    Whether you are looking to improve your skills , gain aqualification or simply wish to learn for fun , we are sure you willfind something amongst the diverse range of courses we have onoffer, in a wide range of locations across the County.

    Our programme of learning opportunities includes courses thataddress skills for the workplace, should you require further work-

    related qualifications to progress on your chosen career path. Forthe unemployed there are skills and qualifications available, someof them FREE, together with additional support to help you in yoursearch for a new job.

    Our family learning courses open up opportunities to learn togetheras a family , alongside your children or grandchildren. The aim is togive parents and carers the knowledge and skills to support yourchildrens learning and development, enhanced by a nationalqualification in literacy and numeracy.

    There are courses for adults of all ages, designed to excite andinspire you. These include ever popular exercise, relaxation andarts and crafts courses.

    Finding the right course is the first stage of your learning journeyand our experienced staff are on hand to give you all the help andadvice you need. We can also offer additional support if you have alearning difficulty or disability and you may be eligible for help withthe cost of your fees.

    We will do our best to ensure your time spent as a learner with ourservice is enjoyable and fulfilling , and to support you inachieving your personal goals.

    Places are limited on each course and wetherefore recommend early registration.Please note that any enquiries remainprovisional until payment is received.

    Enrolment can sometimes be made at thefirst session of a course (the registrationevening) but please note that there will be noguarantee of a place.

    How do I know if a course is right forme?

    Adult Learning Service staff are veryexperienced in giving advice and guidancerelating to learning opportunities. Every officehas a Community Development Worker whowill listen to your requirements and matchthese to one of the many learningopportunities on offer.

    You can attend a course in any area. If youwould like a prospectus for another area,please telephone (01609) 532478.

    How can I enrol on a class?Enquiries are welcome by e-mail or phone,followed by payment to your area office,either by post (cheques only please) or inperson. There are also regional enrolmentsessions (see page 4).

    If a course has already started, please

    contact the area office to find out if places arestill available.

    How can I pay?Cheques should be made payable to North

    Yorkshire County Council. Payment (cash orcheque) can be made at enrolment sessions(see page 4). Some credit cards areaccepted; please ring the area office for

    details. You may be able to spread the cost of your course by using an easy payment plan(full-year courses only) details available fromthe area office.

    Could I be entitled to reduced fees(known as fee remission)?

    There are some circumstances where youcould be entitled to reduced fees. If you arecurrently claiming means tested benefits, forexample Income Support, Housing Benefit,Council Tax Credit and/or Pension Credit, youmay be entitled to a free place (excluding anadministration fee, which is payable). Pleasering your area office for help and advice.Concessions are offered on some courses topeople over the age of 60. If you are an adultunder the age of 19 and NOT in full-timeeducation, you will only have to pay theadministration fee (FE courses only).

    Do you give refunds?

    If a course is cancelled by the service for

    whatever reason, refunds will be given.Learners who withdraw from a course will notbe entitled to a refund, other than inexceptional circumstances, and a 10administration fee will be levied.

    Can I get a qualification to help meimprove my career prospects?

    Yes, we can offer you a full package of support to help you get on the right track. If this is your first full level 1 or 2 qualification,you may be entitled to a free place on one of our courses. Simply contact your area officeand ask to speak to the CommunityDevelopment Worker. There is no charge for

    this service and we can offer you information andadvice on issues such as childcare, travel, feeremission, etc. Friendly, informative advice isavailable either over the phone or at an informalface-to-face discussion.

    Do you have any special facilities forlearners with difficulties or disabilities?

    An essential part of our service is making sureeveryone has equal access to learningopportunities. We produce a separate prospectus

    listing courses designed to support adults withlearning difficulties or disabilities. To request acopy, please contact your area office. If yourequire any extra help, for example with access orequipment to support learning, please let the staff know when you book your place.

    Complaints: North Yorkshire County Councils Adult LearningService aim to provide all learners with a quality, value-for-money experience. We do, however, recognise that sometimesthings can go wrong. If this happens, please contact your areaoffice who will do their best to put things right. If you still wishto make a formal complaint, please contact your area officewho will advise you of the procedure to follow.

    The funding for all our courses comes fromthe Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and weneed to ensure that ALL learners are eligiblefor funding.

    The general brief overview is that the LSC willfund:

    People who have been settled in the UKfor thr ee years.

    European Union (EU) nationals who havelived within the European Economic Area(EEA) for three years prior to commencingtheir course.

    EEA migrant workers who have lived withinthe EEA for three years prior tocommencing their course.

    People with refugee status.

    Asylum seekers in receipt of benefits.

    When you complete the enrolment form foryour course you will be asked about yourresidential status. This is standard procedurefor all learning providers but if you are at allconcerned about this or if you are not sure if

    you are eligible, please ask when you enrol.

    You may be asked to provide proof of yourresidential status at enrolment.

    We offer a free advice and guidanceservice to adults to help you get on the right

    track. If you are over 19 years of age andwant to progress in your chosen career,return to work, change career direction orsimply want to get back into learning, wehave specially trained staff waiting to helpyou. Telephone your area office (see backpage) and ask to speak to the CommunityDevelopment Worker.

    We have advisors based all over the Countyand they will make arrangements to meetwith you to talk through your options.

    Please note: The County Council reserves the right to close, divide or merge courses as may be necessary, having regard to theenrolment figures and subsequent attendance at an individual course, and whilst the County Council will endeavour to cause theminimum inconvenience, learners should be aware that changes in the course may have to be made for a variety of reasons includingenrolment and attendance. The County Council would not accept any liability as a consequence of such change.

    Literacy and numeracy are key skills that will benefit you in a wide range of everyday situations,and improving your abilities in these areas will help to boost your confidence, job prospects andallow you to pursue your ambitions. For example, you may want to access a college course,gain a promotion at work or simply help your children with their homework.

    With classes available across the area at different times and on different days, you will worktowards a National Certificate in numeracy or literacy at entry level, level 1 or level 2.

    All English and Maths classes are free.

    There are a range of courses designed forparents to help them understand more aboutthe school environment and the learningprocess. They aim to give parents more ideas

    on how to stimulate and support their childslanguage and numeracy skills. Nationallyrecognised certificates are issued oncompletion.

    Courses include languages, arts, crafts,fitness, health and exercise programmes .and lots more. These take place throughoutthe year, all over the County. Contact yourarea office for further details (see back page).
