    Because we increased production by two-thirds during the same period, eco-efficiencyimproved by 48%.

    Nestl participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in order to share strategies

    and results. Nestl is also participating in a CDP trial to raise awareness among suppliers.

    2- Nestl uses co-generation technology for a cleaner environment and loweremissions.

    Co-generation plants produce both electricity and steam at the same time.

    They are more efficient and use less fuel than conventional power plants. Consequently, they emit lower levels of CO2, sulphur and nitro oxides.

    Over twenty years ago, Nestl began replacing refrigerant gases associated with globalwarming.

    Today, Nestl uses environmentally neutral ones such as ammonia and carbon dioxide.

    We aim to help them build the capabilities they need for short- and long-term success.

    Employees are offered formal classroom training in 33 developing countries.

    In 2004, Nestl carried out a worldwide review of water-protection methods.

    30 million Swiss Francs are spent every year to construct and expand wastewatertreatment facilities.

    Factories are now able to produce the same amount of produce with significantly lesswastewater.

    12- NESCAF Partners Blend was the companys first Fairtrade-certified coffee.

    Partners Blend was the first NESCAF materialisation of a sustainable end-productoffered to consumers. It was launched in 2005.

    Nescaf Partners Blend comes from coffee grown by small-holder farming

    communities in El Salvador and Ethiopia. In both countries, sustainability has been encouraged with among other things bettercherry-processing equipment, technical assistance and training centres.

    13- NESCAF is researching and developing coffee and cocoa crops that offerfarmers better yields.

    Nestl has invested significantly in research at the Nestl R&D Centre in Tours.

    The aim is to improve quality, yield, taste and disease resistance.

    Together with good farming practices, such new coffee plants can help farmers improveproduction and increase their income.

    14- NESCAF buys coffee from nearly all the countries in which it is grown.

    Around 80% of coffee farmers are smallholders with only a few hectares or less of land.

    For many of these farmers, coffee represents their only source of income.

    NESCAF is also involved in projects with a local company, Mullege. Key aspects ofthis project include improvement of a wet mill to avoid environmental contamination bypulp and waste water, technical assistance to farmers and set-up of a system to improvelocal potable water supplies to local community.

    In addition, the Nestl Research & Development Centre in Tours, France, iscollaborating with the Ethiopian Agricultural Research & Development Centre in Jima.

    16- NESCAF supplies high-quality coffee plants to farmers.

    These are offered at cost or free of charge in a number of countries.

    They are specially chosen for the local soil and environment.

    Farmers using them are able to improve both the quality and the yield of their coffee.

    17- NESCAF helps farmers to invest in better processing. NESCAF is involved in projects that give financial investment support to farmingcommunities.

    By acquiring efficient equipment for processing cherries, farmers improve the quality oftheir produce.

    This means that farmers get more revenue from the coffee beans they grow.

    18- Nestl has implemented numerous improvements to reduce wastewater.

    Today it operates 160 treatment plants to clean water before it is returned to nature.

    Between 2004 and 2008, it reduced wastewater by 45% per kilo of food produced.

    We remove 96% of the organic load in the water used in our production processesbefore returning it to the environment.

    19- Already, more than 20 NESCAF factories are using spent coffee grounds asrenewable fuel.

    In total, it amounts to about 800 000 tonnes per year.

    This way, we can know the impact of the whole coffee-making process.

    It gives us data to help us improve environmental performance in our own directoperations.

    22- Nestl investigates many recycling options to minimize the volume of wastematerials going to landfill sites.

    Nestl uses only approved landfill sites for its waste materials. By-products are increasingly transformed into valuable raw materials.

    Today it requires only one additional litre of water per litre bottle produced. This represents a saving of 33% over previous methods.

    24- Despite producing far more food than before, Nestls energy usage has actuallyfallen in the last decade.

    In 2008 Nestl used 3% less energy than it did in 1999.

    During the same period Nestl increased production by more than two-thirds.

    We have set the goal of reducing energy usage by 1% - 2% per kilo each year for thenext 5 years.

    25- Nestl has reduced emissions of ozone-depleting gases by 99% per kilo ofproduct.

    Over the course of 20 years, we have lowered emissions by 99% for every kilo of food

    we produce. We are currently removing 80 tonnes of greenhouse gases from refrigeration plants.

    On average 15 grams of CO2 emissions are produced per kilo of product delivered.

    This represents about 10% of CO2 generated during the manufacturing process.

    29- NESCAF is a founding member of the Common Code for the CoffeeCommunity.

    The 4C Association includes growers, manufactures, government organisations andNGOs.

    It is based on a voluntary Code of Conduct for social, environmental and economicpractices in coffee production.

    The 4C Code is designed to encourage a process of continuous improvement towards

    sustainability.30- NESCAF has created a network of own green coffee buying stations in severalcountries; this system is called "Direct Procurement".

    Thanks to the Direct Procurement system, coffee growers can bring their green coffeedirectly to Nestl, avoiding middle-men, and therefore receiving a higher revenue.

    Instead of exporting green coffee; NESCAF uses the stations to supply its ownfactories in the same country.

    31- Over half a million farmers (610 000) supply Nestl directly. Nestl offers many of these farmers free technical assistance.

    Nestl works with them to help them deal with local problems, such as drought or soilerosion.

    Whatever the local conditions, Nestl strives to find the solutions that are adapted forthe farmers working the land.
