The donation was the second in the program’s history with the first going to the Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Department in Indiana on behalf of Five Star Security. This Responder Reward donation was made to acknowledge the fast response by the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department (CJPVFD) to Patti and Michael Hellyer's home in Bethesda, which saved their three dogs and substantially minimized property damage. The photoelectric smoke detectors installed by Splaine Security Systems quickly recognized the fire scenario and alerted EMERgency24 monitors who dispatched the authorities immediately. "All of our dogs are safe because of our alarm system and we didn't even have smoke damage because the fire department was called so fast. They got there so quickly that the smoke didn't have time to soak into the walls," Patti Hellyer said of the recent fire in her home. "My husband was making dog food on the stove and we were getting ready to leave for a meeting at our neighbor's house. Apparently, the burner was left on and we left." Two hours later, when other neighbors left the meeting, they rushed back inside to announce that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service vehicles were in front of the Hellyer residence. "We walked down the street and saw all of our windows were opened, so we knew something happened. The smoke set off the alarm and the fire department was summoned. It would have been so much worse if there was no alarm system," Mrs. Hellyer said. "The fire would have grown until someone noticed what was happening. firefighters to gain access, but thatis the least of our worries. We couldhave lost our dogs and everything inour home."

During the ceremony, CJPVFDChief James Seavey said thatincidents like this highlight theimportant role alarm-systeminstallers play in keeping ourcommunities safe and the value ofhaving a security system monitoredby a central station. "This situationunderscores the importance ofhaving a monitored alarm system."

Bernie Ramos, EM24 WashingtonD.C. Branch Manager, praised theactions of the members of theCJPVFD Company 10 when hepresented the plaque. "To illustratethe important role firefighters playin communities across the nation, Iwant to highlight the actions of thepeople in this room. The fire at theHellyer's home is a perfect exampleof how alarm installationcompanies, central stations andemergency responders worktogether to make our communitiessafe. Because of the quick and fastresponse by Company 10, theHellyer's were able to spend theholidays in their home."

Sam Splaine, President of SplaineSecurity Systems, explained thatsecurity is a linear process. "If anylink in the chain fails – the sensor, communication to the control panel, alarm transmission to EM24,dispatch of the responders – theneverything else is wasted. A smokealarm monitored by EM24 is somuch more effective than a systemthat only has an audible alarm. If noone is home, the neighbors won'thear your alarm because of the wayhouses are insulated, but they mighthear the windows explodeeventually. Unfortunately, by thattime, most of the house is gone andpets have no way of escaping. Thatsums up the importance of having amonitored alarm system."

Readers of security industry trademagazines should be on the look out for the new illustrated advertisingcampaign that will help EM24 launchthe PERS offering nationwide.Modeled after the Charles Schwabtelevision commercials, the artworkreceived a “posterized” treatment toproduce an effect similar to theanimated ads produced by theinvestment giant. To convey themessage in a linear fashion, a comicstrip format was used to lead readersfrom the first through sixth frame.

The first “story” is about an alarmdealer company owned and operatedby Al Armstrong. He’s having troublewith subscribers not being able to payfor or cancelling their monitoringservice. After discussing the situationwith an office staff member, Alrealizes that EM24’s PERS offering isa way to reclaim some of the lostrecurring monthly revenue. To helpkick start PERS in his area, Al decidesto order customized flyers from EM24to send to his existing customers in thenext set of billing statements.

Second in a SeriesThe second “comic strip” ad is gearedtoward larger alarm dealer companiesthat often employee more office staffto perform marketing, accounting andmanagement duties. The setting is aconference room where four people arediscussing stagnant growth, the agingU.S. population, soaring cost ofhealthcare and ways to generate newrevenue. It is decided that with freecustomized flyers from EM24, PERSwill be a very cost-effective service tointroduce to their customers.

“The goal of the campaign is to depictscenes that mirrors the currenteconomic scenario we all face. Whendealers see these ads in SDM, SecuritySales & Integration and SecurityDealer & Integrator, we want them tosay, ‘Hey, that’s the situation I’mdealing with now,’” said KevinMcCarthy, National Sales Manager.“With PERS, we’ve given alarm

dealers the solution to regenerate lostrecurring monthly revenue.”

A Call to ActionThe “call to action” for these adsencourages dealers to contactEMERgency24 to order customizedflyers that will have their companyname and contact informationimprinted within the design.

Since these were first offered at theend of 2008, tens of thousands havebeen requested and sent to dealersacross the county. “These flyers werecreated to inform potential customers –end-users and their relatives – aboutthe advantages of having a PERSsystem for senior citizens livingalone,” Kevin said. “By offeringcustomized sales materials, we areabsorbing the cost to introduce PERSas a value-added service for our alarmdealers,” Kevin explained. “Everyoneknows someone who needs this service– it could be for themselves, a parentor a neighbor. Ultimately, PERS wasdeveloped to help our dealers growtheir businesses.”

EM24 Now a Master Dealer ofConnect24 Clearinghouse ServiceEMERgency24 is now a masterdistributor of DSC's Connect 24service, which is an alarmclearinghouse that can route cellularsignals direct to our digital receivers. One benefit of this relationship forEM24 alarm dealers is that billing hasbeen simplified so there is only onecheck to write instead of two.More importantly, EM24 is able towaive activation fees, which savesalarm dealers $5.00 for each newConnect 24 account that is set up.Over the first year of service, thisdecreases the cost per subscriber by seven percent! The actual charge you’ll pay is foryour regular monthly monitoring feefrom EM24, plus the $5.95 that youpreviously paid to Connect 24.

Twenty-five signals are included eachmonth, with additional signals billedat $0.15 each. With the closure of the analogSkyroute system due to the AMPSdeadline, this is the perfect time totransition customers to the GSMnetwork. Along with additional reliability andincreased affordability, Connect 24’sdigital GSM transmission is a perfectsolution for subscribers not using atraditional PSTN phone line (VoIPfor example). This ensures EM24alarm dealers will be able to retainhard-earned customers by offering asecure wireless solution that iscompatible with any control panelthat communicates using Contact ID.

EMERgency24 is developing a newissue of Security Seeker to give alarmdealers another opportunity toreiterate to their customers theimportance of having a monitoredalarm system.“This issue will be a single page tominimize postage and it stresses theun-thought-of benefits of a monitored

alarm system. It will help dealersminimize subscriber attrition,” saidKevin McCarthy, EM24 NationalSales Manager. To order copies for your customers, call 1-800-800-3624 or you can e-mail your request (with dealernumber and quantity) to:[email protected].

Collecting payment for system monitoring is more difficultduring economic downturns. It makes sense then for alarmdealers to take all steps necessary to bring in revenue thatis owed to their company. One of the most effectivemethods is to set up a system whereby a subscriber'schecking account or credit card automatically sendpayments at agreed-upon intervals. Each of thesetransactions only costs about $0.20 and eliminates the time needed to track-down payments. "To set up automatic payments, all an alarm dealer has todo is collect their customer's information and give it totheir bank who will handle the transaction," said ChuckGitles of American Chartered Bank. "This payment methodis key in the alarm industry because attrition rate isdramatically lower compared to customers who write acheck each month. For example, if a customer set up forauto payment has a credit score north of 680 and theaccount is aged at least one year, the dealer can expectsignificantly lower attrition on those accounts compared to

those not on an automatic payment program."Collection Letters for DownloadAs a way to help its dealers collect from customers whoare not responding to bills, EMERgency24 wrote threecustomizable collections letters that can be downloadedfrom the Dealer Literature page on the company website. Each letter has highlighted spaces to reference a specificaccount number, list the address of the protected propertyand state the outstanding balance. The letter series wascreated to be sent at intervals of 15, 30 and 60 days pastthe original due date with the language becoming moredirect as time passes."Alarm dealers work hard to build a customer base togenerate recurring monthly revenue," Kevin McCarthysaid. "We believe that by following these collectionprocedures and staying on top of billing that falls behind, alarm dealers will receive a greater portion of revenue that is rightfully theirs."
