Celebrating 45 years of service to the community……

Message from the Executive Director
Dear KASC Members, We continue to search for a new part-time Day-time Custodian. Pedro Melendez has been filling in, but he also works at the senior center in the evening and weekends, besides carrying a full time job elsewhere. We don’t want to wear Pedro out, so, if you know someone who may be interested, please tell him/her to contact me for an interview. The part-time hours are in the mornings five days a week. Warmer weather and flowering plants remind us of the renewal of life that attends the spring season. We are fortunate to enjoy pleasant weather and beautiful surroundings at this time of year. The senior center is also a source of pleasure for many seniors and families for many reasons. The exercise programs, nutritional meals, the information and assistance received and social activities help us all to thrive too. In order to provide you with its wealth of resources, we need your support. Our annual spring appeal begins in May, and we ask you to support your senior center as much as you can. Please look for our letter coming soon and respond right away so that we can keep providing you with the programs and services that you value. Thank you for your very generous support and we hope you have a great spring! Warm regards,
Anita M. O’Connor

From the Board of Directors President:
This month I would like to introduce you to one of our newest board members, Gary Smith. Gary is Emeritus Professor of Population Biology and Epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Penn. When he retired in 2016 he was the Chief of the Section of Epidemiology and Public Health. He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine and is a Fellow of the Center for Public Health Initiatives. He has Bachelors degrees in Zoology (Oxford University) and Education (University of Cambridge) and was awarded a D.Phil. by York University. After several years as a high school teacher (in England), he began his University career as a field ecologist and became interested in the use of mathematic models of infectious disease transmission to make sense of data during two fellowships at Imperial College in Roy Anderson’s laboratory. He took up his position at Penn in 1986; since then he has divided his research time almost equally between classical epidemiological study types and mathematical modeling. He is equally at home working with infectious diseases of people or animals. He has served on an FAO/WHO Expert Committee, Pennsylvania Food Quality Assurance Committee, European Union Expert Committee on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy risk, on a Whitehouse Blue Ribbon Panel on Agroterrorism for the Federal Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Academies Committee. He has twice been asked to testify before the Pennsylvania House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee (on Foot and Mouth Disease, and on Agroterrorism). He is currently a member of the Advisory Board for the Disaster Medicine and Management program at Philadelphia University, and a frequent invitee to Pennsylvania Task Force Trainings in which he advises on the role of law enforcement agencies in the face of large scale animal epidemics. He is a founding member of the Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS: Chairman of the Board 2001-2012). He has written 8 or so pantomimes in the British style, two of which were performed by the Peoples’ Light and Theater Company, Malvern, PA. He continues to direct pantomimes for KATS. He created the Kennett Square First Friday in August “Murder Mystery”.

Lunches at the KASC
KASC meals are provided by the Chester County Department of Aging Services Congregate Meal Program. The monthly menu is published in the newsletter and posted at the Center. Membership is not required in order for individuals 60 and over to participate in this program. All residents 60 and older are invited to attend and enjoy a noontime meal. There is no cost to you for the meal, but you must contact KASC to reserve your meal by 3pm Wednesday for the entire following week of meal service. A voluntary, confidential contribution of $2.00 is applied to the meal’s cost and returned to CCDAS. The official registration and financial information of Chester County Department of Aging Services may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1(800)732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Lunch that must be consumed at the Senior Center. We discourage seniors from taking food home due to health risks from spoiled food.
Anyone ordering a meal who is under the age of 60 must pay full price, which is now $4.89.
Thank you for your cooperation.
