Living with a puppy should be a joy

Here are some tips to get you on the right track

• If you are getting your puppy from a breeder, do make sureyou see their mother and litter mates.

• Don’t pick the puppy that is hiding behind all its littermates.We often feel sorry for the underdog but you could end upwith problems that last your puppy’s lifetime.

• If the mother is aggressive then walk away. Find anotherbreeder.

• Ideally your puppy will have been raised indoors and willbe familiar with the everyday sounds of a household suchas the vacuum cleaner, the washing machine, visitorscoming and going and children.

• Research the breed that you are interested in. Can you putup with a herding Border Collie or German Shepherd, aRetriever that has to pick things up and carry them around,or a Spaniel that constantly follows scents when out on a walk?

‘The ideal age to bringa puppy home is 8 weeks’

• The ideal age to bring a puppy home is 8 weeks. Anyyounger and your puppy will not have learnt the necessarylessons from their mother and littermates.

• The optimum age for socialising your puppy is before 14weeks of age. You can take him on short journeys in thecar and carry him around in your arms so he meets andgreets plenty of different people. It is also recommendedthat you socialise your puppy with calm, older, vaccinateddogs that you are familiar with.

• Your puppy may be a little distressed the first couple ofnights in your home and will cry and whine when you tryand put him to bed. This behaviour should calm down aftera few days. He may well be very upset at having left hismother and littermates so give him a while to get to knowyou and feel at home.

• Find a good puppy class.

• Go and watch a class first, make sure you are happy withthe class, that the trainer is friendly and that no punishmentis used. No shouting, no scruff shaking and definitely nosmacking puppies. If you feel uncomfortable at all thenleave and find another class.

• If you live in the country, try to take your puppy into towns.If you socialise your puppy well enough, they will acceptenvironmental changes in their stride.

• Take into account your puppy’s breed when socialising. ABorder Collie or German Shepherd will need more gentlesocialising than a Labrador.

• Many puppies grow fearful of the car because of the firstassociation. The first time they usually go into the car iswhen they are leaving their mother and littermates, the nextcouple of times is usually when they go to the vets for apainful injection. Take your puppy on short trips tosomewhere pleasant.

• Visit the vet purely so the vet nurses can give your puppy atreat and give him a cuddle.

• Don’t let house training become a chore. Dispense with thenewspaper and take your puppy out every 45 minutes.Stay with him or he will sit outside the door waiting for you,and reward him with lots of praise or a little titbit the minutehe go to the toilet outside.

• Don’t punish your puppy for having an accident inside thehouse. This is your fault not your puppy’s. You weren’tpaying attention.

• Always supervise children and puppies. Do not let childrencarry the puppy around – it is not a teddy bear.

• Children should not be allowed to pull or prod your puppy.

• Always teach children to respect your puppy and yourpuppy to respect your children.

• Your puppy should be wormed once a month until they aresix months old and then every three months thereafter, unlessotherwise advised by your vet.

• If your puppy is sleeping, do not disturb him. It can makeyour puppy grumpy and it is vital for a puppy to get plentyof sleep and rest.

• Get the whole family involved in training. Good classesallow children to join in.

• Don’t let habits begin when your puppy is small that youcannot tolerate when your puppy is fully grown. Jumpingup is a prime example.

• Think! ‘What has my puppy learnt from that’ when you reactto unwanted behaviour.

• Remember all puppy behaviour is natural dog behaviour -reward your puppy for the behaviour you want, to makeyour life together as stress free and as happy as possible.

Quality IngredientsThe quality of our raw ingredients is key – we knowour suppliers personally and we visit them regularly. Wetest every delivery of every ingredient and we reject anythat don’t meet our high standards.

Quality FoodHaving tested the raw ingredients, we carefully ‘mix’and ‘cook’ them to make the ‘kibbles’ or ‘biscuits’ thatyou see in the bag. We test the food every half-hourwhilst we’re making it to make sure the ‘mix’ and the‘cook’ are right. The next morning, a sample goesbefore our panel for a final check which includes useating some to check that the taste and the bite aregood, (we all have our favourites!)
