Calgary Evergreen Traffic UpdatePlease slow down, drive safely and watch out for each other!

Happy New Year! This is the time of year when the temperatures really get cold. I hope I am wrong and that we will find ourselves with a fairly mild winter. Regardless, when it gets cold, make sure you plug your block heater in, and when it warms up and we have a chinook, make sure you have lots of windshield washer fluid. Also make sure you put your winter tires on and turn on your headlights during dawn and dusk so that your tail-lights are seen.

School TrafficPlease slow down! We all need to be cautious and watch out for each other and each other’s kids around the school. Your hurriedness to get to work because you are running late should not jeopardize the safety of anyone! I will be meeting with each of the three schools in Ever-green, school transportation, city traffic engineers and hopefully our councillor to discuss school traffic safety.

If you have witnessed problems with the traffic at the schools, please take the time to communicate it to the principal and also email it to me as well. The more de-tails I have then the easier it will be for me to forward to our CRO (Community Resource Officer) who can for-ward it to traffic.

Traffic SpeedEvergreen continues to have a speed problem with the number of cars shortcutting through Evergreen via Fish Creek Blvd. and Everridge Dr. to get to and from 37th St. If you witness ongoing traffic issues during your travels, please take the time to log a traffic service request and email the concerns to me. The link is below. The more frequently we speak up about the traffic issues, the more that can be corrected.

Traffic Calming Curbs

We are continuing to work on and evaluate the traffic calming curbs. Some traffic and pedestrian counts have been done and now we evaluate. We are also working with the city as to other potential locations.

Traffic Safety CommitteeIf you would like to help with the traffic safety in Ever-green, join the Evergreen Traffic Safety Committee!

Once we have enough people and interest, we will set up recurring meetings and discuss the traffic issues in Evergreen and how we might solve them. The more people we have advocating to the city, the sooner we can have something in place.

Once again, if you witness any traffic issues on an ongo-ing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected] and also via the Traffic Service Re-quest directly to the police. This can be done at http://www.calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-Service-Re-quests.aspx.

Please report road and sign issues to 311. This can be done online at http://www.calgary.ca/CS/CSC/Pages/311.aspx or at the app website http://spot311.calgary.ca.

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything I have written here, you can email me at [email protected].

Thanks,

Paul Bushell, Traffic Director

Calling for Calgary Awards NominationsThe Calgary Awards is one of the largest citizen recogni-tion programs in our city. The City of Calgary established the Calgary Awards in 1994 to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians in the previous year. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups and organizations are nominated in five major award categories, for a total of 13 awards.

The City of Calgary encourages all Calgarians to look to their neighbours, colleagues, community leaders, local organizations and businesses for those who could qual-ify as recipients of the Calgary Awards.

The Calgary Awards are for Calgarians. Individuals, busi-nesses, not-for-profit organizations, community groups and other organizations can all be nominated. For addi-tional information, nomination criteria and the online application form visit: calgary.ca/calgaryawards phon-ing 403-268-8881, or e-mail [email protected]. Nominations open on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.

Fun FactThe Calgary Awards began in 1994 as a Centennial project to commemorate Calgary’s 100th year as a city and to recognize outstanding citizen achieve-ments. The Calgary Awards celebrate Calgarians who have helped make Calgary the best place to live. Visit calgary.ca/calgaryawards for more information.

Safety First: Tobogganing and Sledding Winter is a great season to get outdoors, especially with the thrill of tobogganing and/or sledding! Here is a list of helpful reminders if you decide to take part in this fun winter activity.

•Inspect your ride: Inspect all your equipment for any cracks or broken parts, this includes toboggan or sled, helmet and ensure that you can keep your equipment under control.

•Be cautious: Slide during the day time and in well-lit areas, be aware of potential hazards like holes, fences, trees and signs.

•Ready, set, slide: Ensure the path is clear, keep control and kneeling or sitting feet first face is the safest method to ride.

•Maintained hills: Did you know that the Parks and Bylaw don’t allow tobogganing or sledding downhill in a city-main-tained park? However, there are 20+ hills across the city that have been maintained for your safety. To find which hills are maintained for public use check the City’s website at www.calgary.ca.

New Year’s Resolution - Assemble Important DocumentsIt’s the New Year again; a time when many are making resolutions and taking steps to be better organized. This January, start small with one task: organize your impor-tant documents so that you are prepared for anything, including an emergency or disaster.

In a disaster, your immediate concern will be the safety of you and your loved ones. But, once the immediate danger passes, having access to important financial, in-surance, legal, medical, and other personal documents will be crucial to help you start the recovery process quickly.

“Trying to gather up all of these documents during or after an emergency can be very challenging,” said Tom Sampson, Chief of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency. “Taking time now to safeguard these critical documents will help you avoid additional stress when a disaster actually hits.”

What kind of information should you gather?•Identification: copies of driver’s licenses, passports

birth certificates, social insurance numbers.•Household: mortgage records, insurance policies, pho-

tos of household contents.•Medical: health care numbers, insurance/benefit infor-

mation, copies of prescriptions, names and addresses of doctors and specialists.•Financial: tax and banking information, credit card

numbers and contacts.

Sampson offered the following tips: •Consider storing paper copies at home in a fireproof

and waterproof box or safe, in a bank safe deposit box or with a trusted friend or relative. •Store electronic copies of important documents in

a password-protected file on a flash/USB or external hard drive in a fireproof and waterproof location or consider using a secure cloud-based service where you can always get access.•Make sure your documents are together, and easy to

grab and go if you needed to evacuate your home.

For more information about how to prepare your family and your home for an emergency, visit calgary.ca/getready. Learn what the risks are in Calgary, how to build a 72-hour emergency kit and take the Calgary Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Calgary course.

SAFE&SOUND

Toboggan SafetyEmergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to remind parents and children of some basic toboggan/sledding safety tips as the winter season continues. Injuries may result from collisions with stationary objects on the hill, such as trees or rocks, or even collisions with other people. Unprotected falls can also result in more serious injury if you lose control at high speeds. However, every-one can be safe and have fun on the toboggan hill by following these simple reminders.

Equipment•Always ensure your toboggan or sledding device is

in good repair. Inspect it for any damaged or missing parts before each use;•Be certain the operator is fully capable of staying in

control of the sled at all times;•Children should wear a certified, properly fitted helmet

designed for other high impact sports such as hockey, cycling, or climbing.

Hazards•Avoid hills that are too steep or too icy;•Choose hills free of all obstacles such as trees, rocks,

utility poles, or fences; •Beware of loose scarves or clothing containing draw-

strings which could present a strangulation hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Plan ahead •Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes; •Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to

exchange wet garments for dry ones; •Take breaks, out of the cold, to warm up; •Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin; •Even when properly protected from the elements, the

finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek bones can be affected by frostbite; •If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the

individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it, or by placing the affected part in warm, not hot, water, until re-warmed.

Interested in Doing a Job that Counts? TheCityIsHiringCivicCensusTakers! The City’s civic census is conducted annually starting on April 1 and that means census taker recruitment is underway. The City needs flexible workers to help collect this information us-ing mobile tablets.

Census takers are assigned an area to collect census informa-tion; areas vary in size, but are generally between 400 and 600 dwellings. Census takers have three weeks to complete the col-lection in their assigned area. They set their own schedule to get their work done and may be required to work in the eve-nings and weekends when most people are at home. Census takers need to be able to complete online training at home and be available for an in-person session in March.

Applications can be completed online by visiting calgary.ca/census. Applications can also be completed at The City of Cal-gary Elections and Census Office (1103 55th Ave. N.E.) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you or anyone you know would be a good fit as a census taker, be sure to send them to calgary.ca/census to fill out an applica-tion. The Elections and Census Office will be selecting applica-tions between Jan. 21 to Feb. 8, 2019.

Once in a blue moon.Meaning: The phrase refers to something that hap-pens very infrequently.

Origins: Confusingly, a blue moon doesn’t refer to the actual colour of the moon; it refers to when we see a full moon twice in one month. This happens every two to three years.

It’s thought that the word “blue” may have come from the now obsolete word “belewe,” which meant “to betray”; the “betrayer moon” was an additional spring full moon that would mean people would have to fast for an extra month during Lent. The say-ing in its present meaning is first recorded in 1821.

Drive Safely this WinterGetting safely to your destination is easier with a bit of preparation, whether you are taking shorter trips around the neighborhood or longer excursions on the highway.

Have your antifreeze levels, battery and ignition system, brakes, heater and defroster checked on your vehicle. Install good winter tires for the best traction in slick conditions. Also, driving with your gas tank nearly full ensures that even if you are stranded that you will be able to keep warm until help arrives.

You will also want to have a vehicle emergency kit, with:

•Jumper cables•Flares or reflective triangle•Ice scraper•Car cell phone charger•Cat litter or sand for better tire traction•Non-perishable food and water•Blankets, extra warm clothes and winter gloves•Small shovel

Should you need these items, you will be glad you took a few moments to plan ahead.

Safe driving, Calgary! For more information on winter emergency safety, and to learn more about how to pre-pare your family and your home for an emergency, visit calgary.ca/getready. Learn what the risks are in Calgary, how to build a 72-hour emergency kit and take the Cal-gary Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Calgary course.

Watch for Your New and Improved Water Utility Bill Delivering safe and reliable drinking water, treating wastewater, providing flood protection and maintain-ing a system of pipes, plants and pumps for a city of 1.2 million is complex.

Reading your bill shouldn’t be.

You told us you wanted your utility bill to be simple and clear. We worked with you to make it easier to see what you pay for and how your rates are calculated.

What’s new?Starting this month, the water portion of your utility bill clearly outlines your City of Calgary water services. It shows your usage, how it’s calculated and how your rates ensure reliable water service and support critical infrastructure for our city.

Your water charge pays for the cost of treating your drinking water and getting it to you. Your basic service charge enables us to maintain the infrastructure needed to do that.

Your wastewater charge pays for the cost of taking away the water you’ve used and treating it before it’s returned to our rivers. Your bill now shows you are paying for 90% of your water usage rather than 90% of the wastewater rate. The calculation more clearly shows that on average through the year, 90% of the water you use goes to the wastewater system and a portion (e.g. outdoor water-ing) does not. While the calculation shown on your bill has changed, what you pay has not.

Calculation prior to bill improvements: 8m3 at $1.4852/m3 = $11.88.

Calculation now: (8m3 x 0.9) = 7.2 at $1.6502/m3 = $11.88

Your wastewater basic service charge enables us to maintain the infrastructure to treat wastewater.

Your storm water basic service charge enables us to maintain reliable street drainage, flood protection and the health of our rivers.

Every business, organization and home in Calgary de-pends on around-the-clock access to water services. Your rates support us to deliver high quality drinking water, treat our wastewater safely and protect the river—our source of drinking water. Together we make life better every day.

For more information on water rates and reading your bill, visit calgary.ca/waterbill.

The Jobber’s House project at the Bow Valley RanchHelp the Friends raise $500,000 to renovate and repur-pose the Jobber’s House! The Jobber’s House at the Bow Valley Ranch in Fish Creek has been part of the charm of this area for three generations, and community members constantly tell us how much the building means to them.

We are proposing to take over and renovate and repur-pose the Jobber’s House to enhance and expand our educational activities, host community outreach activ-ities, meetings, and year-round wellness activities, real-ize countless other possibilities, and ensure the survival of this piece of Calgary’s history. We are planning to turn the Jobber’s House at the Bow Valley Ranch into a truly useful space that will benefit the park and community members for generations to come. Special thanks to the Alberta Real Estate Foundation for supporting the Jobber’s House project.
