It took a small group of volunteers and town employees less than a day to erect the new Braydon Coburn outdoor skating rink at Jubilee Park.

“Things went very smoothly,” said Ron Phillips, Shaunavon’s Director of Parks and Facilities. “I think we were done by about 4:30.”

The work crew included Phillips, Kevin Szwetz, Derek Tremere, Dean McNabb, Cory Folbar, Kyle Bennett and Barry Sonen.

The effort also enjoyed the support of Southwest Rentals, which provided a skidsteer for the job, as well as the Shaunavon Fire Department, which provided a truck and manpower to clear ice from the site.

Southwest Terminal also made an important contribution to the project by sending a driver and trailer to Edmonton to pick up the rink materials and haul them back to Shaunavon.

Organizers originally planned to build the rink this past weekend, but moved the schedule up several days to take advantage of some unseasonably warm temperatures in the middle of the week.

Cooler temperatures over the weekend allowed crews to initiate the first floods at the rink and the facility should be open for skaters this week.

The new rink was named after Coburn as a way of honouring everything the NHL star has done for the community over the years.

Town council also passed a resolution to name the street leading up to the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre as Braydon Coburn Drive. The new street signs were erected last week.

The new outdoor rink is located on a section of concrete remaining from the old Jubilee Arena.

It covers an area just west of the skateboard park that was already being used for ball hockey.

The rink boards, purchased from a company in Edmonton that specializes in this type of equipment, are modular units that can be easily moved or reconfigured.

“We already configured it a little bit different than the original design,” said Phillips. “Instead of having both player box entrances on the same side, we actually moved one to the other side. That should provide a little more access for people entering and leaving the rink.”

The new rink will measure approximately 50’ by 82’.

“The boards aren’t as heavy duty as those in the (CPWC), but they aren’t designed that way,” said Phillips. “These are portable units, so you can move them anywhere. And if we want to make the rink bigger we can just order and add more boards.”

The new structure will replace the old outdoor rink which had faced its challenges in recent times. The rink’s dilapidated boards were removed several years ago.

The old rink is also located a considerable distance from the new CPWC.

When it was first constructed, the old outdoor rink had occupied a spot directly

behind the Jubilee Arena. But now that the arena has been demolished, the outdoor rink sits on its own on the eastern edge of the Sportsgrounds.

“I know that even when we held a few community events at the old outdoor rink during the Centennial that it wasn’t the most convenient location and it wasn’t the most accessible for things like washroom facilities or just finding a place to stay warm,” said B ennett , w ho he lp e d sp e arhe ad a fundriasing drive to build the Braydon Coburn outdoor rink. “The new rink will be a lot closer to the Wickenheiser Centre and the concrete floor will make it much easier to maintain for the staff.”

The new rink will also have a more accessible water supply from the swimming pool’s maintenance room.

A large portion of the cost of the new rink was covered through several initiatives. For instance, proceeds from this year’s annual Braydon Coburn Summer Hockey School, which totaled $17,000, were directed to the project.

Another fundraising campaign raised $6,000 with 12 different sponsors each making a $500 commitment to the rink.

Local businesses making $500 donations to the r ink include Walter’s Home Furnishings, Binkley’s Funeral Service, Harvest Eatery, B-Rev/Subway, Southwest Rentals, LTD., A & B Auto, Great Western Rai lway, Shaunavon Co-op, Cooper Plumbing, Overtime Restaurant and Sports Lounge, and Global Flow.

The sponsors will all have their names displayed on the outside boards of the rink and the facility will carry the name “Braydon Coburn Outdoor Rink.”

The new rink will not interfere with the skateboard park. In fact, the new boards and netting will actually help keep pucks and balls from leaving the area and rolling onto the streets or other parts of the park.

Off icials also say that any future development at the skateboard park, which has turned into one of the busiest recreational facilities in the community, will not be affected by the new outdoor rink.

Jubilee Park has been the site of some major developments in recent years. The location encompasses an area that now includes a resurfaced tennis court , swimming pool, playground equipment, skate park and integrated sidewalks. The new outdoor rink will be an added feature.

Further upgrades are also expected at the site, including new signage, benches and garbage containers.

Town officials plan to hold a grand opening to celebrate the new rink this summer during the Braydon Coburn Hockey School.

This Day in Canadian History1963: Diefenbaker government collapses

His eyes blazing and his finger stabbing the air, John George Diefenbaker set 1950s Canada alight with his vision of a bountiful land on the threshold of greatness. Yet many feel the Saskatchewan lawyer’s promise as prime minister exceeded his deeds. His own party eventually turned against him. But nobody can deny that “Dief the Chief ” forged an intense bond with his beloved “average Canadians.” It’s the end of the line for Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. His beleaguered minority government is falling apart over the issue of placing American nuclear warheads in Canada. The controversy has already prompted Dief ’s defence minister to resign. Now, the final blows: two no-confidence motions that topple his government. • The internal dissent within the minority government of John Diefenbaker stemmed from the Bomarc missile crisis. In the fall of 1958, Diefenbaker agreed to a U.S. request to have Bomarc anti-air-craft missiles stationed in Canada. A total of 56 missiles were placed under Norad command in North Bay, Ont., and La Macaza, Que. The missiles were supposed to replace the Avro Arrow fighter jet in Canada’s defences. • Fervent debate erupted when the public learned, in 1960, that the Bomarcs were to be fitted with nuclear warheads. Despite strong pressure from U.S. President John F. Kennedy, Diefenbaker told his cabinet in early 1962 that he couldn’t accept American nuclear arms on Canadian soil. Saying that Canada was reneging on its Norad commitment, Defence Minister Douglas Harkness resigned on Feb. 4, 1963. He was not present in the House of Commons for the no-confidence votes. • Harkness and Diefenbaker had clashed before on defence policy. During the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, Diefenbaker hesitated when Kennedy -- with whom he had a stormy relationship -- asked Canada to put its troops on high alert. Harkness quietly defied the prime minister and effectively granted Kennedy’s request three days before Diefenbaker officially relented. • After the Harkness resignation, Diefenbaker demanded and received a loyalty pledge from the rest of cabinet. He was surprised a few days later when Trade and Commerce Minister George Hees and acting defence minister Pierre Sévigny quit over the nuclear issue. • There were two back-to-back no-confidence motions that ultimately toppled Diefenbak-er’s government. The first motion was brought forward by the Social Credit party, the second by the Liberals. The results were identical: 142-111 against the government. Diefenbaker announced that he would confer with the Governor General the next day (meaning that Parliament would be dissolved and a new election called). • The last speaker before the first no-confidence vote was New Democrat leader Tommy Douglas, who announced: “The hour of decision has come. Let the people decide.” However, two British Columbia New Democrats ended up voting with Diefenbaker’s government on the motion. • Although Diefenbaker survived the challenge to his leadership that followed the collapse of his government, he lost the ensuing election. His six-year run as prime minister ended on April 8, when the Liberals under Lester Pearson won 129 seats to the Conservatives’ 95.

Do you like to get dirty? For some a job in paradise means being surrounded by palm trees and

coconuts. To us, it means an environment filled with the rich scent of soil, the rapture of a seedling breaking into the world and the beauty of a

thousand blossoms spanning every color of the rainbow.

We currently have seasonal positions available starting on March 1st .

A typical day would include getting your hands dirty, transplanting seedlings, moving plants from one greenhouse to another and hauling soil.

As plants grow and the weather turns to spring much of your day would be filled with pulling orders for the many

greenhouses we supply to throughout Saskatchewan. Your workday will be physically demanding

requiring bending, lifting and standing.

Does our paradise sound good to you? Tell us why you’re the person we need. Ask for Ron or Jacqueline White.

It WaS SO COld tHat: • We had to stop eating with metal cutlery. Some people walked around for days with spoons or forks stuck to their tongues! • Hitchhikers were holding up pictures of thumbs! • Roosters were rushing into Kentucky Fried Chicken and begging to use the pressure cooker! • When I dialed 911, a recorded message said to phone back in the spring! • The optician was giving away free ice scrapers with every new pair of eyeglasses! • Kids were using a new excuse to stay up late: “But Mom, my pyjamas haven’t thawed out yet!” • UN weapons inspectors suddenly decided that chemical weapons might be hidden in Hawaii! •Pickpockets were sticking their hands in strangers’ pockets just to keep them warm! • The squirrels in the park were throwing them-selves at an electric fence! • I chipped a tooth on my soup! • My Dad was wearing golfing gloves on both hands! • The dogs were wearing cats! • Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick! • People with traffic tickets would plead guilty and beg for the electric chair! • Levi Strauss started manufacturing electric jeans! • The rats were bribing the alley cats for a snug-gle. • We had to chop up the piano for firewood - but we only got two chords. • We had to carry around hammers and chisels so we could get out of our parkas! • When we milked the cows, we got ice cream! When we milked the brown cows - we got choc-olate ice cream! • Words froze in the air. If you wanted to hear what someone said, you had to grab a handful of sentences and take them in by the fire! • The dogs had to put jumper cables on the rab-bits - just to get them running! • We pulled everything out of the freezer and huddled inside it to warm up! • The Husky Association was making emergency service calls to get the dog teams started! • When we parked the sled, we either had to plug in the dogs - or keep them running in place!

• My girlfriend left me be-cause of my obsession with Linkin Park. But in the end, it doesn’t even matter.

Q: What do you call an 80s synth pop band with a scoop of ice cream? A: Depeche a la Mode.

• Being a soprano is a great opera tunity.

• What was Beethoven’s favorite fruit? Ba-na-na-NAAA • What do you call a mu-sician with problems? a trebled man.
