ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP

BUSINESS AND COMMERCE

ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

“Jason from the Treasury spoke to the Business and Commerce participants about economic theory and its application within New Zealand. He delivered an interactive and informative presentation involving thought-provoking games, discussion and a lot of useful information. The discussions proved to be inspiring.”

“Dr Tane Taylor gave an amazing speech to the Hauora focus group, covering topics like the NZ health-care system, Māori health, and sexual health. He answered lots of the participants’ questions, and his words were incredibly thought-provoking. It should lead to some amazing discussion in the focus group.” HAUORA

Kelly Tarltons was more than just cute penguins and toothy sharks. The connection between sustainability of ocean resources to the sustainability of progress in decreasing poverty was explored, giving participants a lot to think about in their focus group session this afternoon.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTYouthline promoted its mantra of youth engagement and interconnectedness by filling our morning with fun games. The charismatic poet and youth worker Dietrich had this focus group express their ideas on youth development through spoken word, rapping, skits and interpretative dance, and ended the morning with a tour of their Ponsonby headquarters.

EDUCATION AND SCIENCE

INFRASTRUCTURE

“Law and Order visited Blue Light Ventures and learned about community policing and prevention programmes which focus on youth offending.”

“Our outreach was a highly informative and inspirational talk on how technology can be used in education” - the participants left to-day feeling truly empowered to make “ed-ucated” improvements on our education system. Websites and apps are the way of the future - however the challenges inherent within this are yet to be explored…

The visual impact and discussion surround-ing the old trams, public transport and the development of the Harbour Bridge allowed everyone to look in the past to better prepare and discuss the infrastructure of New Zealand’s largest cities.

SOCIAL SERVICES“In our journey to the Auck-land City Mission we debated the role of Charity and the pros/cons of government benefits. P.S. ‘No one earns more than the cows.’”

Participants ventured through the Customs Services mail distribution centre, seeing the ins and outs of Customs’ process for check-ing everything that enters or leaves the country for drugs or other illegal materials. There were beagles, x-ray machines, and fun times were had.

PŌWHIRI & TIKANGA WORKSHOP

NOTABLE TWEETS

Youth Declaration 2014 opened with an invigorat-ing Pōwhiri, featuring the spectacular performance, courtesy of Ngatauira Māori. Committee introduc-tions and a stimulating speech by Sally Wu followed, “Tikanga is not just the domain of Māori.”

This was followed by a workshop, as Tikanga holds a special place in New Zealand culture. With fantas-tic guest speakers; Meka Whaitiri, Shay Wright and Hone Harawira; this was both an entertaining and en-joyable session for the participants.

“Tikanga can be established simply because it needs to be done.”

If you need to leave the conference facility at any point, ensure that you have signed out with a Welfare or one of the Committee members.

ANZAC COMMEMORATION

E tipu, e rea, Mo ngā ra o tau ao; Ko to ringa ki ngā rakau a te Pāhekā Hei ara mo to tinana, Ko to ngākau ki ngā taonga a o tipuna Māori Hei tikitiki mo to māhuna, A, ko to wairua ki to Atua,

Nāna nei ngā mea katoa.

As Participants gathered in the lecture theatre today the atmosphere was alive with the spirit of unification and honour; in commemoration, and remembrance. The ANZAC day session opened with a one minute silence to remember those who have fallen in war. Brittany then delivered a speech that empowered participants, while instilling them with an understanding of the important responsibility of continuing the legacy ANZAC holds.

“ANZAC Day is a chance to remember those who fell in war, but also for those who have fallen against tragedy and circumstance.” Kiwa continued the session with an emotive per-sonal account of the 28th Māori Battalion. The idea that Māori were not allowed to enlist in war was a new one to many of us, and incomprehensible in today’s day and age. The power of war in allowing young Māori leaders to unite Māori communities and bring together Māori and Pākehā allows us to consider what war really meant to our community. Kiwa explained how Tikanga within the New Zealand Army and Navy exists today because of the actions the brave Māori of the past took, and the significance of these actions within the Māori commu-nity.

ANZAC day is not a day to engage in tradition just because we as youth have been informed to do so. Today is a day to think about what battle means to you as an individual. What would your ultimate sacrifice be? What battles do people still face day-to-day around the world? How can we as youth be inspired by the actions of our ancestors, by our own actions today?

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.
