The next generation ofradiant conditioning systems...

Enjoying the greatest comfort at home and in the workplace is more than just a desire; it’s one of our most fundamental needs.

To meet these needs, Zehnder has developed the most complete system on the market, to provide the perfect indoor environments incorporating optimal temperature and humidity conditions all year round.

The technologies used eliminate the disadvantages typically associated with traditional systems, such as fluctuating temperatures or draughts. In fact, by using one of many structures already in place, whether a wall or ceiling, an even temperature can be achieved easily.

Zehnder Nestsystems uses water at very low temperatures in winter (27-30°C instead of the usual 70-80°C) and relatively high temperatures in summer (15-20°C compared to the usual 7-12°C), resulting in satisfaction not only for the body and mind, but also for the pocket.

That’s what we at Zehnder call absolute comfort.

How it works...

Heating

Zehnder radiant panels replicate the

natural thermal effect of the sun. The

radiant panels are heated by hot water

and give off energy into the room. This

energy is only converted into a heating

effect when it meets the human body or

an object.

When heating with radiant panels, the

room air temperature is lower than

the resultant temperature but with the

same sense of perceived temperature.

The result is that energy usage and

costs are reduced due to the lower

difference between the room air and the

outside air temperature (Fig. 1). This is

especially effective when compared with

traditional air heating (Fig. 2).

Cooling

Cold water flows through the ceiling

panels making them the coolest item in

the room. Warmer items within the room

heat the air which then passes over

the cool surface of the panel and cools

down. The cooled air flows back into

the room.

In summer, when cooling with radiant

panels, the room air temperature is

higher than the resultant temperature

but with the same sense of perceived

temperature. The result is that the

difference between the room air

temperature and the outside air

temperature reduces the total cooling

load (Fig. 3) and, again, saves energy

and costs especially when compared to

traditional air cooling (Fig. 4).

Compared to other

systems...This is where radiant conditioning really

comes into its own:

Compared to more traditional heating

systems such as Underfloor Heating

and Active Building Systems, desired

temperatures can be achieved much

quicker with Zehnder Nestsystems due

to the capacity for self-regulation of

temperature fluctuations, thus saving

between 30 - 50% of energy usage and

costs (Fig. 1).

Zehnder Nestsystems also eliminate

the disadvantages typically associated

with alternative systems such as Fan

Coil Units. Not only are perceived

temperatures achieved more efficiently

(Fig. 2), radiant conditioning operates

virtually without noise nor has the

unpleasant draughts or associated

distribution of dust.

*1 To simulate the miscellaneous inertias of various systems, tests were carried out using a radiant ceiling panel, an underfloor heating system and an active building system. All systems were cooled to a surface temperature of 17°C. The systems were then subjected to the same mass flow and the same flow temperature until each system had achieved a surface temperature of approximately 35°C.

*2 The inertia testing of both Radiant Conditioning Systems and Fan Coil Units were carried out independently in a number of 5-star hotel rooms by Venice University.

Build YOUR system...

Zehnder Nestsystems are suitable for both heating

and cooling rooms, and can be installed in the

ceiling or on the wall.

The main component of the system is the

radiant panel itself, which can then be added to

dehumidification units and / or control systems

which means the Zehnder Nestsystems are as

adaptable as you require them to be to meet your

exact design needs.

Plasterboard radiant panels with hydraulic pump, connectors and tubing

PLUS controls

The Zehnder Chronosonda Control system automatically determines the optimum water temperature of the system in consideration of internal and external conditions and dew point factors.

The sensors can be installed anywhere: in homes, hotel rooms, offices or hospitals, etc. The sensors measure the delivery water temperature in the system and the external air temperature which are an important and obligatory accessories for managing a radiant conditioning system. For heating-only systems, a control sensor has also been developed to control the room temperature.

Simple, easy-to-understand icons have been used to make setting the parameters and displaying the zone states as user friendly as possible. The 4 buttons and the display allow the user to set the room temperature and relative humidity directly; the system can be switched off, and 5 timer programmes, along with the zone operating mode, frost protection and temperature reduction can be set directly from inside the room.

Zehnder Nestsystems is suitable for both heating and

cooling rooms, and can be installed in the ceiling or on the

wall. In addition to the various set-up options, the radiant

system provides another advantage: when installed in

ceilings, it acts as a finishing and insulating element in the

building work.

The panels are fastened using standard plasterboard

metal profiles positioned to allow the installation of the

linear manifolds connecting the internal circuits of the

panels between panels: The linear manifolds are made of

a multilayer O 20 x 2 mm tube with an oxygen barrier and

come with Zehnder quick-fit connections for the O 8 x 1

mm PE-Xa tubes with oxygen barrier used for the circuits

inside the panels.

The radiant surface is finished in the same way as

standard plasterboard panels (filled and reinforced with

mesh or masking tape over the joints, primed, painted,

spatula finish, etc.).

Zehnder Nestsystems primarily represents a simple,

rational, efficient and economically viable solution for

dry radiant panel heating and cooling for the modern

building trade in the construction of new buildings or

refurbishment.

Zehnder Nestsystems offers both plant engineering

and construction functions, as the panels provide heat

insulation and replace the plaster finish, leaving room for

electrical systems and plumbing.

Zehnder NIC panels are easy to install when refurbishing;

the installation requires no brickwork but only plasterwork

or decoration.

Zehnder Nestsystems notably reduces on-site installation

times and there will be less cleaning to do, with no

chases cut in the walls or finishing required after electrical

installations and plumbing are laid. No bulky traditional

heating or air conditioning units need to be installed

(radiators or fan coils).

Zehnder Nestsystems can be installed on the walls or

ceilings, and requires no hydraulic balancing as the system

is self-balancing. Prior to start-up, the panels are held in

place by normal metal plasterboard profiles screwed onto

the brickwork.

All connections between the circuit and the manifolds

of the linear adduction lines are made with quick-fit

connections, allowing rapid implementation of the lines

supplying the panels. The “linear manifolds” installed near

the panels guarantee the parallel hydraulic connection of

each individual module in order to maintain the pressure

loss constant, regardless of the number of modules

installed. This facilitates the start-up of the installation.

Finally, for an optimal installation depth, all distribution lines

(insulated and preinsulated) remain within the limits of the

panel insulation, requiring a maximum of 69 mm in depth.

The Zehnder NIC panels with quick-fit connections

has a maximum operating pressure of 4 bar (at a liquid

temperature of 40°C).

Construction specifications

The inner layer made of Pe-Xa (high-density reticulated polyethylene in accordance with method “C” using ß rays) has an extremely smooth surface meaning a drastic reduction in pressure loss compared to the traditional metal tube used in the sanitary and heating sector.

The outer layer made of EVOH (ethylene-vinyl-alcohol), forms a barrier of a few dozen µm, which makes the tube practically impermeable to oxygen. The amount of oxygen that seeps through the tube in a day at a temperature of 40°C is less than 0.1 grams per cubic metre, meaning a drastic reduction in corrosive problems in heating systems when plastic tubes are used in combination with materials affected by said phenomena.

The intermediate layer, however, is a very thin layer of polymer (highly adhesive) that bonds the two previous layers together.

Material-related specifications

Thermal conductivity: 0.35 W/m°K pressure resistance and resistance to stress-cracking:

Pressure resistance, compliant with standard ISO 9080 (tested by Studsvik Polymer, an internationally acknowledged test laboratory)

 Test temperature: 110°C, 95°C and 20°C

 10000 hour test passed

The resistance of the material to stress cracking and

pressure at a temperature of 120°C were tested by the

Studsvik laboratory with excellent results.

Oxygen diffusion-related specifications

Oxygen diffusion permeability:

Oxygen diffusion permeability compliant with DIN 4726/4729 (tested by MPA Nordrhein-Westfalen)

Requirements: after exposing the tube to suitable heat cycles, oxygen diffusion must be less than 0.1 g/m3 per day at a temperature of 40°C.

Result: 0.004 g/m3 per day (25 times lower than the required value).

Multilayer 20 x 2 insulated tube

The Multilayer tube is used to transfer water between the panels to the distribution manifold.

The multilayer tube is made of 5 layers bonded solidly together

an internal PE-HD reticulated PE-Xb layer

 an intermediate aluminium layer

 an external PE-HD layer

two adhesive layers inserted respectively between the external and intermediate layer and between the intermediate and internal layer.

The multilayer tube can be used in both the residential and industrial sectors with excellent results in radiant heating systems and hot water distribution systems, as well as in heating systems with radiators or fan coils.

In fact, the multilayer tubing combines the reliability and solidity of traditional metal piping with the practical installation of plastic tubing, eliminating the characteristic drawbacks inherent to each of the two types. The main advantages of the Nest system:

Fast installation

The tube can be bent cold by hand into tight curves without deforming the section

Light and strong (the aluminium core makes the tubing resistant to foot traffic and accidental shocks)

The tube remains shaped in the form it was bent into: whole parts of the system can be constructed off-site, such as the offtakes of bathroom fixtures complete with the relevant final connections

Reduced elongation

Thermal dilation is very similar to that of metal piping, in other words approximately 1/4 ÷ 1/8 that of plastic tubing.

Limited pressure loss, resistant to corrosion and chemical agents

The surface of the internal Pe-Xb layer is extremely smooth resulting in a drastic reduction in pressure loss compared to traditional metal piping. Furthermore, this layer means the piping is:

The surface of the internal Pe-Xb layer is extremely smooth resulting in a drastic reduction in pressure loss compared to traditional metal piping. Furthermore, this layer means the piping is:

Very resistant to acid and base chemical agent attacks

Free of limescale deposits (reduces the possibility of algae and bacteria formation; maintains fluidodynamic characteristics over time)

Effective protection of the aluminium core from phenomena of chemical or natural corrosion. Furthermore, the special design of the connections used, isolating the metal core, eliminates the risk of electrochemical corrosion

Soundproofing

For noise that may be produced by turbulence, vibrations, etc.

Impermeability to oxygen

The internal aluminium layer makes the tube completely impermeable to oxygen, gas and steam, preventing:

the proliferation of algae and bacteria

 corrosion in the circuits

Inner layer impermeable to UV rays

The inner PE-Xb layer is protected by the aluminium layer which prevents the progressive deterioration due to damage caused by exposure to UV rays.

Note: The tube is supplied in packs that protect it during storage. The outer polyethylene layer of the tube should not be exposed to direct sunlight as it is not very resistant to UV rays.

Zehnder Chronosonda

Zehnder has designed and built these unique room controls and sensors to measure temperature and humidity. The result is an essential instrument for managing radiant systems where the room temperature and humidity must be measured to calculate the dew point.

With the end user in mind, simple, easy-to-understand icons have been used to make setting the parameters and displaying the zone states as user-friendly as possible.

The 4 buttons and the display allow the user to set the room temperature and relative humidity directly; the system can be switched off, and 5 timer programmes, along with the zone operating mode, frost protection and temperature reduction can be set directly from inside the room.

The room controls are particularly easy to install and connect. They can be installed anywhere in homes, hotel rooms, offices or hospitals, etc.

The Zehnder CFTH controller, for effective handling of heating and cooling in winter and summer, as well as for dehumidification. The temperature can be managed by a timer programme with reduction periods, or in manual mode. The Zehnder CFTH is the best solution for managing your radiant cooling system, thanks to the continuous dew point calculation and the dehumidifier control based on absolute humidity.

It is equipped with a backlit display to guarantee visibility even in difficult conditions. Installation is fast and easy thanks to the compact dimensions of the unit, which can be installed in standard electrical boxes. The user can set a variety of parameters using the 4 buttons and the display.

The Zehnder CFTH BUS control sensor measures the temperature and relative humidity in the room where it is installed. The control sensor has a display and buttons so the user can set the desired temperature and the functional mode for the zone and its dehumidifier.

The room control sensor calculates the dew point on the basis of the temperature and humidity in the room and then controls the electrothermal actuator heads and the dehumidifier to guarantee the desired conditions of comfort while preventing condensation.

Technical specifications:

The Zehnder CFTH BUS control sensor is designed to function only with Zehnder Control BUS 10-1w or 90-4 regulators (see section 8 )

The sensor must be powered with 12 VAC (alternating current)

The room sensors and dehumidifiers can be connected to the electronic regulator using an RS-485 bus communications cable

 Type “503” box

Sensor standard colour: White RAL 9010

34

Zehnder Control BUS units

The central control unit is the efficient heart of the Zehnder comfort project. The system gives you continuous control over the dew point thanks to a series of CFTH BUS sensors (see section 7 ) reading the room temperature and humidity. The control unit regulates the water delivery temperature on the basis of the readings, so the surface temperature of the radiant system remains above the critical level.

The control unit coordinates and monitors various devices in the system, allowing you to manage:

the temperatures in the various zones

the humidity levels in the various zones

The monitoring produces a graphic representation of the whole system, and all the system variables can be managed. Monitoring may be done using a local network or from a remote station with an Internet connection via modem. The control sensors in each room are connected directly to the heart of the system, providing full user interaction to set the temperature, humidity and timer directly from the control sensor.

Up to 90 zones can be controlled thanks to the room sensors connected to the central control unit.

Use the table below to select which central control unit best suits the projects requirements.

Zehnder Dew dehumidification units

Zehnder Dew dehumidifiers have been designed, built and optimised for installation in ceiling, wall and floor radiant conditioning systems controlled by Zehnder Control units.

For use with boilers and chillers, Zehnder Dew 200, 350 and 500 dehumidifiers are dimensioned to dehumidify the home or work environment in general: small and medium-sized storerooms and offices.

The Zehnder Dew 200, Zehnder Dew 350 and Zehnder Dew 500 are designed for installation in ceilings. The use of dedicated ducting for air distribution is intended.

For use with heat pumps, Zehnder has designed and built the Zehnder ComfoDew 200, Zehnder ComfoDew 350 and Zehnder ComfoDew 500 dehumidifier range specifically for installation with high-efficiency dual flow heat regenerators. This optimises plant

engineering in terms of comfort, energy savings and air quality. Ventilation ducting is used to control the level of humidity in all rooms, guaranteeing maximum performance of the radiant system.

Specific accessories, the Zehnder Plenum, make coupling and connecting the dehumidifiers to the heat pump easy.

The Zehnder Dew 700 dehumidifier is specifically designed for medium-large residential applications, shops and the tertiary sector. It is not suitable for industrial applications
