A tsunami is a long, high sea wave, and is usually caused by an earthquake, or other disturbance. It destroys EVERYTHING in its path, which could include an ENTIRE city!

Why is a tsunami a hazard?

A tsunami is a hazard to humans, because people are usually not prepared for tsunamis. Tsunamis could come on shore without warning, and COMPLETELY destroy a city. People who live near the ocean, should really be concerned about tsunamis, because you never know when one could appear. If more people are concerned about tsunamis, then we can do more to be prepared.

Region most vulnerable?

The region most vulnerable to a tsunami is the coastal region. Even though Wilmington, NC doesn't have any recorded tsunamis, it's a great example of a vulnerable place to tsunamis. (pictures are of Wrightsvile Beach, NC)

How is the destructive nature of tsunamis measured?

The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory invented a scientific instrument known as the tsunameter. It's anchored at the bottom of the ocean, and can detect tsunamis very quickly, by measuring the water pressure when a tsunami passes.

How can we protect/prepare ourselves for a tsunami?

To prepare yourself for a tsunami, you should know your local communitys suggested evacuation routes to safe areas. Prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. Also, move to higher ground immediately. After a tsunami you should stay away from flooded areas, until you get an ok. Stay away from the debris in the water, for it could cause safety or health risks. Help injured people, or any neighbors that may need assistance. Stay out of buildings if water still surrounds them, because the building could sink or collapse.
