ACCOMMODATIONS, GROUP SIZE & MEALSThe AmaWaterways ship is your floating luxury hotel,letting you visit a new city or country each day withouthaving to pack up your bags! We've limited ourBackroads group size to 30, but just like any hotel, we'llbe sharing the ship with other guests. These 164‐passenger ships are custom‐designed with a variety ofinviting common spaces so you'll have plenty of roomfor both relaxing and socializing with other guests. Alldinners are prepared by the ship's classically trainedchefs and are served on board in the ship's diningrooms.

ITINERARY FLEXIBILITY: GOING WITH THEFLOWOur daily itinerary is based on scheduled sailing andport arrival times and as a result some days have moreopportunities for exploring on land while other dayshave more sailing time. Every river has its own uniquetemperament and for centuries water levels have shifteddue to rain, temperature and agriculture. High waterlevels may mean the ship cannot pass under a bridge,low water levels result in slower sailing, and a disabledlock can also lead to some extra cruising time. Shouldany unforeseen change happen during your river cruise,we will work closely with AmaWaterways' captain andstaff, who are very experienced in going with the flow.

Day 1On the first day of the trip, meet your Backroads TripLeaders (the folks in Backroads T‐shirts) at 9 a.m. atHotel Victoria (+41‐61‐270‐70‐70), located atCentralbahnplatz 3–4 in Basel, Switzerland. Pleasecome dressed ready to ride and bring your luggageand a daypack with rain gear and anything else youmay want for today's activities (your luggage will betransported to our ship).

Welcome to the Rhine River Valley! The majesticRhine flows from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea,snaking its way through Switzerland, Austria,Lichtenstein, France, Germany and the Netherlands.Both a historic trade artery and fertile agriculturalregion, the river's spectacular natural scenery ispunctuated by myriad castles and fortifications builtto protect it, making for an extraordinary backdrop forbiking and cruising.

After meeting in Basel we shuttle across the border tothe German village of Schwand. Here your BackroadsTrip Leaders fit your bike and give a brief talk onbiking techniques and safety. After a lunch of localfare you're ready to ride. Warm up with a spin amidthe pines and firs of the Black Forest, admiring thefamed half‐timbered farmhouses along the way. Asthe forest opens up, take in far‐reaching views of theverdant Rhine River Valley and—weather permitting—the soaring Swiss Alps.

Descend into the Baden wine region and pedalthrough rolling vineyards and along meanderingcreeks. Your destination this afternoon is the port inBasel, where our floating luxury hotel for the nextseven nights awaits.

Settle into your stateroom before we gather for awelcome reception and the ship's safety briefing.Then we kick off our journey down the Rhine with anoutstanding dinner together on board the ship. (Cruiseovernight Basel to Breisach)

Cruise Breisach to Strasbourg 2 p.m.–9:30 p.m.

This morning arrive in Breisach, Germany with itsdelightful town center and hilltop Gothic cathedral,which looks out across the Vosges Mountains, theRhine and nearby vineyards. Despite its fortifications,Breisach has been razed by war and then rebuiltnumerous times. Eighty‐five percent of it wasdestroyed by Allied forces crossing the Rhine duringWorld War II.

We shuttle across the border into France's Alsaceregion, where the Vosges mountain range shields itsfoothills from ocean weather patterns, creating asunny, warm and dry microclimate—wonderfullysuited to cultivating wine grapes. Hop in the saddlefor a spin along the Route des Vins (or "Wine Route")through undulating vineyards that produce fabulousRieslings, Gewürztraminers and Pinot Gris. Feel freeto stop at one of the tempting wineries for a taste ofthe local lifeblood. Turn onto a peaceful bike path andpedal between the fairy‐tale towns of Riquewihr andEguisheim, recognized as two of the most beautifulvillages in France. For a midday snack, stop by a caféfor a taste of flammkuchen (or tarte flambée), anAlsatian dish with a thin bread‐dough base,traditionally topped with fromage blanc, thinly sliced

onions and bacon.

Afterward we shuttle back to the ship for a cruisealong the Grand Canal of Alsace. This engineering featdiverts most of the Rhine's water into a morenavigable channel that runs alongside the naturalriver. There's time to enjoy lunch at your leisure, reada book on the Sun Deck and pamper yourself with arevitalizing massage treatment. (Massages treatmentsare not included in the trip price.)

We reconvene tonight in the ship's main dining roomfor another delicious dinner together. (OvernightStrasbourg)

Today's ride showcases the World Heritage city ofStrasbourg, set at the confluence of the Rhine, Rhôneand Marne Rivers. Leaving the ship, cycle past theEuropean Union Parliament and the Orangerie, thecity's oldest park. Follow the quaint Marne‐RhineCanal to the Forts Trail, a paved bike path thatconnects historic forts surrounding Strasbourg. On theoutskirts of town a landscape of rolling farmland andtidy orchards unfolds, with the majestic spire ofStrasbourg Cathedral towering in the distance.

Return to the ship for lunch or sample some local fare—like flammkuchen, if you haven't tried it yet—withlunch on your own in Strasbourg. Later this afternoon,join your leaders and a knowledgeable local guide fora walking tour of historic Strasbourg. The rest of theafternoon is yours to stroll the city's streets, peruse itsshops or visit a museum or two.

Dinner tonight is at your leisure on the ship. If youprefer to dine on your own in Strasbourg, now is agreat opportunity to experience the region's French‐and German‐inspired cuisine. Later in the evening,enjoy a splendid French music performance in theship's lounge. (Cruise overnight Strasbourg to Speyer)

Our ship arrives this morning in picturesque Speyer,one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer wasestablished by the Romans and was once thecommand center of Germany and Europe. EightGerman emperors and kings are buried in the SpeyerCathedral, a World Heritage site and the largestRomanesque church in the world.

Fuel up with breakfast on the ship before taking ashuttle to Hambacher Castle, where today's ridebegins. Enjoy sweeping views before descendingthrough vineyards, verdant farmland and protectedwetlands along the German Wine Route in Palatine,the second largest wine‐producing region in Germany.Stop for a tasting of Riesling, Müeller‐Thurgau orDornfelder at a local winery before riding all the wayback to our ship in Speyer. 

Or if you'd like to take a break from cycling today, joinan excursion provided by the ship to see Heidelberg, astunning German city dominated by impressive castleruins situated 300 feet above the old town center.

Back on board the ship, we resume our cruise alongthe Rhine before we retire to the ship's dining roomfor another delicious dinner together. (OvernightRüdesheim)

Cruise Rüdesheim to Koblenz 2:30 p.m.–6 p.m.

Get to know the Rhine Gorge, officially named theUpper Middle Rhine Valley, on today's ride throughone of the most scenic sections of the river. A WorldHeritage site, the gorge is famous for its uniquecombination of geological, historical and culturalsignificance. Start the ride with a short ferry rideacross the Rhine, taking in views of Rüdesheim againstthe backdrop of vineyards and theNiederwalddenkmal, a monument thatcommemorates the founding of the German Empire in1871.

Then hop in the saddle and follow the Rhine as itmeanders through the gorge, flanked by dozens ofcastles and fortifications, through an area that boaststhe highest concentration of castles in the world. Thesurrounding slopes are covered with vineyards andleave just enough space for narrow villages and smalltowns such as Bacharach, Boppard and Saint Goar.After passing the storied Lorelei Rock at the narrowestand deepest section of the river, take a break fromcycling at a local winery.

If you're looking for a challenge this afternoon, tacklethe climb to the Rhine Plateau for fabulous views ofthe valley and Rheinfels Castle, the largest castle

overlooking the river. Then grab a lift in the shuttle orride all the way to meet our ship in Koblenz, a citystrategically situated where the Rhine and MoselRivers meet.

For a mix of biking and cruising today, you can opt fora shuttle back to the ship after lunch and settle into aspot on the Sun Deck to take in the Rhine Gorge as ourship cruises from Rüdesheim to Koblenz thisafternoon.

This evening, relax on the ship and have dinner atyour leisure. Later, join our AmaWaterways CruiseDirector for a short stroll into the historic center ofKoblenz. (Overnight Koblenz)

Day 6Cruise Koblenz to Bonn 7 a.m.–10:30 a.m.

Cruise Cologne to Utrecht 6:30 p.m.–8:30 a.m.

This morning we sail to Bonn, the former capital ofWest Germany and the birthplace of Ludwig vanBeethoven. We set out on an easygoing ride along theRhine, tracing the ship's path as it continues onward toCologne. Finish your morning ride at a local brewpubfor a refueling lunch.

This afternoon, you don't have to choose betweenbiking and a city tour—you get both on a guided ridethrough the historic city of Cologne. Spin through thevibrant city and marvel at the mix of old and newarchitecture—Cologne was almost completelydestroyed during World War II and herculean effortshave been made to both restore and revitalize it.Along the way you'll learn about the city's captivatingpast and make a stop at the famous CologneCathedral, a World Heritage site, built between 1248and 1880 to house the reputed relics of the ThreeWise Men. Following the tour, you have theopportunity to explore Cologne even further on yourown.

We gather this evening for the Captain's farewellcocktail celebration and gala dinner, as this is our lastnight of sailing—but our cycling adventure continues!(Cruise overnight Cologne to Utrecht)

Bid Auf Wiedersehen to Germany and hallo to Hollandthis morning as we cruise toward Amsterdam, a cyclisthaven. The Dutch may not have invented the bicycle,but they've sure perfected cycling as a way of life!There are more than 10,500 miles of fietspaden(bicycle paths) and roads in the Netherlands, many ofthem traffic‐free. And remember—this is all in acountry the size of Maryland!

We experience the Netherlands in a nutshell today,spinning along smooth, wide, well‐marked bike pathspast innumerable lakes and rivers en route to our finaldestination, the world‐class city of Amsterdam. Startyour ride in Utrecht along a popular bike routefollowing the River Vecht, dotted with magnificentcountry estates built by wealthy merchants fromAmsterdam in the 17th century. We conclude our rideat Muiderslot Castle, where we have time to explorebefore savoring lunch at a tavern on the castlegrounds. Afterward, either shuttle or pedal the rest ofthe way to Amsterdam.

With its remarkable museums, like the Rijksmuseum,Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum,picturesque canals, vibrant cafes and fascinatingshops, Amsterdam beckons for a visit. This afternoonwe embark on a sightseeing cruise along the city'sintricate waterways in a traditional canal boat.

Day 8Disembarkation in Amsterdam

Delight in a leisurely breakfast this morning, then bidfarewell to your Backroads leaders beforedisembarking the ship. Please see “Arriving &Departing” for end‐of‐trip logistics.

Train: Trains run several times an hour fromAmsterdam Centraal (the city's main train station) tothe airport, from 6 a.m. until midnight (and once anhour before 6 a.m.). The trip takes 15 minutes andcosts around $7. 

Connexxion Airport Hotel Shuttle: Coaches run dailyfrom 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. between the airport and morethan 100 hotels in and around Amsterdam. (You don'thave to stay at the hotels to use the service.) Visitwww.airporthotelshuttle.nl or call +31‐(0)88‐33‐94‐741for reservations and tickets; the one‐way fare isapproximately $23 per person. The length of the tripvaries depending on how many stops the shuttlemakes.

TRAIN TRAVEL FROM ZURICH TO BASELTrains run between Zürich Main Station (ZürichHauptbahnhof) and Basel approximately every 30minutes from 5 a.m. to midnight. The trip takes aboutan hour and tickets start around $40.

reservations through your own travel agent or theSwiss Federal Railways (SFR) website atwww.sbb.ch/en.

You can also purchase tickets and make reservationsthrough Rail Europe (www.raileurope.com; 800‐622‐8600). Be aware that they charge service fees. 

Another option is to wait until you arrive inSwitzerland to purchase your rail tickets. In moststations, there are reservation counters with agentswho speak English. These counters are often locatedaway from the main departure area. Many stationsalso have automatic ticket machines that sell ticketsand reservation coupons for travel in Switzerland andfor principal cross‐border routes. The machines acceptcash and credit or debit cards. 

Your seat reservation will usually appear as a separatecoupon along with your actual train ticket. It willspecify the train number, the coach number, class oftravel and seat number. 

BOARDING THE TRAINYour platform number will generally be listed at least10 minutes prior to departure on the small televisionscreens or the larger schedule boards in the mainstation area (larger stations only). Four columns willbe listed: destination, type of train, platform numberand departure time. 

It’s possible that not all cars on your train arecontinuing to your destination. Therefore, it’simportant to make sure the nameplate on your car(usually posted outside near the door) corresponds toyour travel destination. Once inside the car, look foryour reserved seat. If it’s a small train andreservations are not required, you can sit anywhere.Keep your bags in sight, if possible, and stay alert;many luggage thieves and pickpockets specialize indashing on and off trains.
