    thebrutalgangrapeinIndiamadeittonewspaperandTVheadlinesalike.Thetimeisright,

    andthetimeisnowtoincreaseoureffortsandraiseourvoice.

    AsanongovernmentalorganizationwiththeUN,ZontaInternationalhasalwaysworked

    closelywithitsvariousagencies. Infact,ourthreeZISVAWprojectsthisbienniumare

    managedbyUNWomen.

    Giventhisspecialrelationship,ZontalookedmorecloselyattheSayNOUNiTEcampaign

    whichwaslaunchedbyUNWomenin2009. Thatcampaigntitleandtheirproclamation

    thatthe

    25th

    of

    every

    month

    be

    called

    Orange

    Day

    to

    recognize

    the

    issue

    of

    violence

    againstwomeninspiredtheZontaSaysNOCampaign.

    InterDistrictMeetinginCanada,Icancertainlysaythattheresponsetothecampaignand

    tothemerchandisingitemshasbeenoverwhelming. Zontiansinattendanceboughtallof

    theinventorythatIbroughtandwerelookingformore. Manystatedthattheywouldbe

    givingthemtotheirclubmembers,districtconferenceattendees,Z/GoldenZstudents,

    guestspeakers,andparticipantsintheircommunityevents.

    ThispastApril,TheZCofTrentonMercer,NJD3USAorganizedits13thannualRapeand

    ViolenceEradicationWalkorRAVEforshort.

    Thiswalkdemonstratestwothings1. thedifferencethatwecanmakewhenwereachout

    tocommunityorganizationsandpolicedepartmentswithinourowncommunitiesand2.

    thetruthinthesaying,Ajourneyofathousandmilesbeginswithasinglestep.

    In2001,theclubsStatusofWomenServiceCommitteewantedtostartaZISVAWproject

    withintheircommunityofMercerCounty.

    ThecommitteeconsultedwithWomanspace,anonprofitwhichprovidescounselingand

    servicestovictimsofdomesticabuseandsexualassault. Aftermeetingwitha

    representativefromalocalpolicedepartment,theZontianswereinvitedtoattenda

    meetingofthenewlyformedDomesticViolenceVictimsResponseTeam. Thatteamof

    volunteers,whoaretrainedbymembersofWomanspace,meetwithvictimsafteran

    abusiveincidentinspeciallyequippedareasinlocalpolicestations.

    Inthelast7years,morethan$46,000UShavebeenraisedtosupportwomenandchildren

    TheZontaClubsofAlessandriaandCasaleMonferratoinItaly,District30,exhibited

    womensshoestorepresentvictimsofviolence.Thisactionhasalreadyinspiredanumber

    ofclubsinotherpartsoftheworld.InGermany,weknowofatleast15clubsthatare

    planningtomakeshoespartoftheirNovember/DecemberZontaSaysNOevent.
