1620 Etienne Brule was the first Frenchman to

arrive in Michigan. He lived far east in Canada. He enjoyed taking canoe trips along the rivers. One day he wanted to go west but could not use Lake Ontario or Lake Erie because the Iroquois tribes lived along those lakes. The French and Iroquois were enemies so he had to find another way along the Ottawa River.
