A3 Thinking: Analysis
What is the purpose of the Analysis section? To develop a deeper understanding of a problem by understanding why the problem is
occurring To break down the gap into smaller “contributors” or causes
Construction of a Good AnalysisClarifies deep understanding of cause and effect links to your problem (e.g. Asks 5 Whys?) Explores broad range of possible causes (e.g. people, methods, equipment, materials, environ.)Reflects understanding of actual work processes (i.e. go to the gemba – the work place)Reflects agreement with multiple stakeholders (i.e. esp who own the work; customers)Reflects measurement, stratification and/or ranking of top contributors Causes are not “lack of countermeasures/solutions” (e.g. lack of med refill clinic)
Use the simplest tool to tell your story (and engage others in telling their stories):
ZSFG KPO Learning Lab – Analysis Handout - Version 3 – 07/19/16
• Process Maps What is the process? • Value Stream Maps (customer perspective)• Swim Lanes (stratified by roles)
• Histogram/Bar Charts and Run Charts What is the historical data?• Stratification of Data How have you broken down data?• Pareto Charts What are the top contributors?
• Cause & Effect Diagram (Fishbone/Ishikawa) What causes have you considered?• Problem Definition Tree• Results from experiments/PDCAs

PROCESS MAP: A visual map of current work processes
Boxes = steps Diamonds = decisions Arrows = flow Starbursts = opportunities to improve
Purpose: To develop understanding of current work processes and opportunities to improve
PARETO CHART: Combination histogram/bar chart Bars = frequencies from highest to lowest Line chart = % of total
Purpose: To quantify top contributors to a problem
FISHBONE/ISHIKAWA Chart: A cause-effect diagram to study a problem and possible causes by category, such as:
People Materials Equipment Methods Environment (Patients?)
Purpose: To think broadly about possible contributors to a problem
PROBLEM DEFINITION TREE: A diagram to study a problem and its possible causes with focus on following a connected thread of thinking using 5 Whys?
