Radiant barrier, has been used in construction for more than fifty years and has shown
to be very effective in reducing the heat in attic spaces, it is not uncommon to reduce
the ambulant temperature by twenty degrees. This temperature reduction assist in
increasing the efficacy of HVAC equipment that is in many attics. In addition it does not
replace the need for attic insulation, but it assist in reflecting heat away from the area
causing the cooling to be more effective and well as it assist in keeping heat in in the
winter. Ice formulation on roofs and soffit areas is greatly reduced when radiant barriers
are installed.
When the pest control industry first started offering this service, I thought moisture
resulting from roof leaks or condensation, when applied in direct contact to the roof
decking could pose a mold, mildew and rotting problem of the roof decking and support
timbers.
Case in point, my attic had a barrier installed, about six weeks ago a big storm moved
through bringing down some large dead limbs on the roof. One of the limbs knocked a
small hole through the shingles. This was not discovered until a spot showed up in the
master bed room ceiling.
Inspecting for the leak in the attic reviled in this short time a quite severe mold problem
and rot had already started.
This mold, mildew and rot could have been prevented just by just following my
instructions written when the program was developed. Knowing water in any form
exposed to the roof decking on a frequent bases through a leak or condensation can be
a major problem so a product was developed that would prevent this problem if properly
applied prior to the installation of the radiant barrier.
This product is UltraBan manufactured by Rhino Hide in Lakeland, Florida. Easy to
apply with any type low pressure liquid sprayer. Pictures of attic understructure deck
