    Foundation engineering

Branch of civil engineering concerned withlinking structures to the Earth.

    Foundation engineers must model soil

behaviour. This requires specialist knowledge:opportunities for varied work and individualcontribution. Non-routine.

Key area of offshore engineering. Oil,gas, wind, tidal energy reserves requireoffshore foundation structures.

  • 7/31/2019 01 - Introduction Presentation

    3/34

    Aims

To extend the knowledge and understanding

    of soil behaviour obtained from

undergraduate level to the application of a

    range of foundation design problems.

  • 7/31/2019 01 - Introduction Presentation

    4/34

    Aims....

Having successfully completed the module, youwill be able to demonstrate an understanding andknowledge sufficient to be able to:

distinguish between different foundation typesand their appropriate use

be able to design shallow and deep foundationsto carry ultimate loads

be able to estimate deformations under workingconditions

understand the impact of intrusive investigationtechniques on soil parameter determination

  • 7/31/2019 01 - Introduction Presentation

    5/34

    Aims ....

be able to select appropriate soil parameters

    from site investigation data

have an appreciation of the advantages and

    limitations of advanced analytical techniques

    Case for foundation design

What are the applied loads, V, H,M?

What are the relevant soil (and

groundwater) properties? Will the foundation fail under the

    worst plausible loading (ULS)?

Will unacceptable settlementsoccur under the service load(SLS)?
