TEACHERS GUIDE

Making Learning Fun for Everyone!

2

Dear Teachers ,

Get ready for GAMEday Education 2010 with the Peoria Chiefs! Included in this

education packet are exercises you can do with your class to help them get

exci ted about coming out to see a ballgame.

In the spiri t of trying to make learning fun, you will see that each exercise not only

concerns baseball but implements elements of common school subjects as well.

Each exercise is included to help s tudents learn more about baseball while

increasing their intellect and making learning fun. Exercises are grouped by

subject. The main subjects covered are Geography/Social Studies, Math, English

and Brain Busters . There are multiple exercises for each subject so feel free to

choose the best exercise or two for your particular class. Also, for 2010 we’ve

included our brand new Student Media Program which allows two of your

s tudents to “work” as credentialed media pre-game and experience Minor League

Baseball from a reporter’s viewpoint. Please be sure to check out all the details at

the end of this packet.

Our hope is that your class not only enjoys completing the exercises, but that they

will also learn some new fun facts about Chiefs Baseball and their school work.

Any questions you may have about this packet or the GAMEday Education Days

can be answered on our web site at www.peoriachiefs .com, where you will find a

GAMEday Education link under the “Community” tab. This is also the place to

find additional information about the 2010 GAMEday Education Days.

WMBD 31 is proud to be part of the 2010 Peoria Chiefs GAMEday Education program.

WMBD 31 Chief Meteorologist Marcus Bailey and our team of meteorologists will

bring the weather education classroom to the ballpark.

Kids will learn about how meteorologists observe the atmosphere and forecast the

weather. What’s the difference between a “watch” and a “warning;” you’ll find out.

Students will also learn how weather impacts the game of baseball.

We’ll have video presentations and hands-on experiments down on the field.

WMBD’s mascot, “Snow Bear,” and Peoria Chiefs mascot “Homer” will assist to make

the weather presentation a fun-filled event.

So, come on out to the ballpark, learn about the weather, cheer on the Chiefs, and

have a great day.

Best Regards,

Marcus Bailey

WMBD 31 Chief Meteorologist.

Symbols at a Ballpark

Every game at the ballpa rk is sta rted with the sing ing of the Na tional Anthem. Players, fans,

coaches and s tudents all turn a nd face the American flag while lis tening to the performance.

Being a n American is a g reat honor, use these thoughts as you lea rn more about these

patriotic symbols.

1. Who was Betsy Ross?

Pennsylvania woman credited with making the first American flag at the request of

George Washington

2. Why is the American flag nicknamed Old Glory?

This famous name was coined by Captain William Driver, a shipmaster of Salem,

Massachusetts, in 1831. As he was leav ing on one of his many voyages aboard the brig

CHARLES DO GGETT some friends presented him with a beautiful flag of twenty four

stars. As the banner opened to the ocean breeze for the first time, he excla imed "O ld

Glory!" He retired to Nashville in 1837, taking his treasured flag from his sea days

with him. By the time the Civil War erupted, most everyone in and around Nashville

recognized Captain Driver's "Old Glory." When Tennessee seceded from the Union,

Rebels were determined to destr oy his f lag, but repeated searches revealed no trace

of the hated banner.

Then on February 25th, 1862, Union forces captured Nashville and raised the

American flag over the capita l. It was a rather small ensign and immediately folks

began ask ing Captain Driver if "Old Glory" still existed. Happy to have soldiers with

him this time, Capta in Driver went home and began ripping at the seams of his

bedcover. As the stitches holding the quilt-top to the batting unraveled, the onlookers

peered ins ide and saw the 24-starred original "Old Glory"!

Capta in Driver gently gathered up the flag and retur ned with the soldiers to the

capitol. Though he was sixty years old, the Captain climbed up to the tower to replace

the smaller banner with his beloved flag. The Sixth Ohio Reg iment cheered and

saluted - and later adopted the nickname "Old Glory" as their own, telling and re-

telling the story of Capta in Driver's devotion to the flag we honor yet today.

ERA & $$$ Here’s the Pitch

Statistics are very important to pitchers. People want to k now about wi ns and losses, earne d run av erages,

strikeouts a nd walks.

One of the most i mportant statistics to a pit cher is his ear ned r un average. A n earne d run is one score d without

the help of a n error .

An unear ne d run is w he n the runner could not have scored wit hout t he be ne fit of a n error.

The for mula for det ermi ning a pit cher ’s earned run average is :

ERA = (ER x 9) / IP

An earned run average is rep resen ted by a whole nu mber and decimal carried out to two places, such as

3.96.

Figure out the ER A for thes e Peoria

Chiefs pitchers for th e 2009 season.

PITCHER IP ER ERA

Directions: Use the a bove diagrams to help a nswer the following questions.

1) What sha pe is home pla te?

Home plate is an irregular pentagon (5 sides)

2) Using the dimensions of home plate, wha t is the perimeter of home plate?

17 + 8.5 + 12 + 12 + 8.5 = 58”

3) What is the dis tance in feet, a batter will run if he hits a triple?

270 feet

4) If a player hits 2 home runs and strikes out in his other at bat, how many total feet will

he run a round the bases?

720 feet

5) If you walked from home plate, down the foul line, to the right fie ld fence,

approxima tely how ma ny yards would you walk?

Approximate ly 100 y ards (3 feet = 1 yard)

Exactly 103.33 yards

6) BONUS: What is the area of home plate? (hint: you have to use the 3 shapes tha t make

up the plate)

Area of a right triangle = ½ b x h and area of a rectangle = b x h

Area of the rectangle is 17x8.5=144.5

We d etermined th e height of th e triang le to b e 8.47” using Pythagorean

Theorem a2 +b2 =c2

Area of each righ t triangle is ½ (8.5x8.47) = 35.9975, there a re 2 r ight tr iangles,

therefore the area of th e 2 right triangles is 35.9975 x 2 = 71.995

The o vera ll area of home plate th en equals th e areas of the shapes that make it

up, so 144.5+71.995 = 216.495

Directions: Read the following Chiefs press release and answer the questions that follow. The

answers can be found in the reading. Write your answers on a separate piece of paper.

PEORIA, ILPEORIA, ILPEORIA, ILPEORIA, IL---- The Major League Baseball playoffs begin Wednesday with a very strong presence of former Peoria Chiefs players, rehab players, coaches and managers. Overall, 16 individuals who have worn the Chiefs uniform will participate in the

2009 playoffs led by seven with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals, as expected as a former affiliate, lead the way with seven former Chiefs and another three left off the post-season roster. MVP candidate Albert Pujols played in Peoria in 2000 and makes his sixth post-season appearance after hitting .327 with 47 home runs, 45 doubles, 135 RBI and 124 runs scored this season. He also led the Cardinals with a career-high 16

stolen bases. All-Star catcher Yadier Molina played with the 2002 MWL Champion Chiefs and hit .293 this season with six homers, 23 doubles and 54 RBI. Brendan Ryan finished second in the MWL batting race in 2004 and has solidified himself in the Cardinals infield with a .292 season that included 19 doubles, 37 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Outfielder Rick Ankiel pitched for the

Chiefs in 1998 and was on the 2002 roster though he didn’t appear in a game. This season the lefty hit .231 with 11 homers and 38 RBI. On the pitching side, the Chiefs have three former players in the Cardinals bullpen. Kyle McClellan was a Chiefs starter in

2004 before moving to the Cardinals bullpen last year. This season he was 4-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 66 games while earning three saves and 16 holds. Jason Motte was a catcher for the Chiefs in 2003 before making the move to the mound a few years later. He was 4-4 this season with a 4.76 ERA in 69 games while recording 15 holds. Rookie Blake Hawksworth was a 2003 MWL All-

Star as a starter. He made his MLB debut in June and went 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in 30 relief appearances this season. The only non-Cardinals player on a post-season roster is New York Yankees catcher Jose Molina. The older brother of Yadier, Jose played for the Chiefs as a Cubs affiliate in 1994 appearing in 68 games. Last season he hit the final home run in the history of Yankee Stadium. This year Molina appeared in 52 games and hit .217 with a homer and 11 RBI. He is expected to be A.J.

Burnett’s personal catcher in the post-season. Former Chiefs Manager Jim Tracy is back in the post-season after a four year absence. Tracy was the Chiefs skipper in 1987 and 1988 going a combined 141-139 with players Jerome Walton, Shawn Boskie, Derrick May, Mike Harkey and Heath

Slocumb. Tracy began the season as the Colorado Rockies bench coach and took over on an interim basis on May 29 when the club was 18-28 and Clint Hurdle was fired. Under Tracy the Rockies went 74-42 and won the N.L. Wild Card. Tracy was also in the playoffs in 2004 as the Dodgers manager losing the NLDS in four games. The other manager in post-season play is Joe

Girardi who was a player with the Chiefs in 1986. The East Peoria native led the Yankees to a 103-59 record and their first A.L. East title in three years. The former National League Manager of the Year is in his second season with the Yankees, a team he won three World Series with in the 1990s.

The Chiefs have been represented in MLB’s post-season in every year since they were shutout of the 1990 playoffs. Wally Joyner and Devon White were the first former Chiefs to see playoff baseball in the Majors with California in 1986. Since then 117 former Chiefs have played in a total of 483 playoff games.
