A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN…

It is a story so remarkable it is amazing that it has not been made into a movie. In 1896, the twin sisters Agnes and Margaret Smith arrived in Solomon Schechter’s office at Cambridge. They brought with them a manuscript they had taken from the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo a few months prior. As Schechter examined the scroll, he could not believe his eyes. It was an original Hebrew manuscript of the book of Ben Sirach--a post–Biblical work known at that time only in translation. Ben Sirach contains wisdom literature--proverbs and moral instruction for living a life of faith. Among its teachings is a poem that became one of the most famous of the High Holidays: a description of the face of the High Priest upon his exit from the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur.

How glorious he was, surrounded by the people, as he came out of the Holy of Holies.

Like the morning star among the clouds, like the full moon at the festal season;

like the sun shining on the temple of the Most High, like the rainbow gleaming in splendid clouds;

like roses in the days of first fruits, like lilies by a spring of water, like a green shoot on Lebanon on a summer day…

This is what I wish for all of you on the holidays: a time when we reflect, seek forgiveness, are granted atonement by our family, our friends, and our God. May we be renewed by the new year, and find the beauty and splendor as in days of old. L’shana Tova! (P.S.: You can see my teacher, Eli Jaffe, conducting a great version of this poem at this link: http://youtu.be/NIzUwCHliho)

BNAI ABRAHAM 180 CLUB EVENT

On Wednesday evening, August 27, 2014 our fundraiser was held. 150 people attended the cocktail hour, dinner and raffle. They enjoyed socializing on our patio, music by Gary Lader, dinner catered by Exquisite Caterers of Marlboro, NJ, and the delightful comments by Danny Kaye as he hosted the raffle. The five lucky winner were Margaret and David Kaplan, David Schomp, Dr. Eric Schenkel, The Isaac’s of Bell Apothecary and Lexus of the Lehigh Valley. Rabbi Stein created a slide show that was shown through dinner of our synagogue life and the sponsors advertising. It was a lovely way to show our guests something about our congregation and to say thank you at the same time.

By now you should have received the sponsor booklet with the generous advertising which helped make our $21,000 profit possible. Please refer to this booklet often and consider patronizing the businesses that were so generous in giving to our congregation.

Also please join me in thanking the following, who gave so generously of the time and resources to make this event a success: Becky Goldenberg, Hans Lauten, Shirley Falk, Norman Falk, Lothar Gumberich, Aliette and Marc Abo, Margaret and David Kaplan, Howard Nathanson, and Jerry Weisberger. Our own synagogue staff was also on hand throughout the process, and we are appreciative of their efforts. Special thanks to Irene for her work on the sponsorship booklet.

Looking forward to more Bnai Abraham successes.

Judy Walker, Fundraising Chair

NEW LEHIGH VALLEY USY CHAPTER FORMED

The USY chapters of Bnai Abraham, Brith Sholom, and Temple Beth El have combined to form a vibrant new chapter with 25 members so far! Alex Blumenthal, son of Shelley and Neil, has been elected president of the new chapter. He is a sophomore at Easton Area High School. Alex was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the new chapter, aided by two advisors who are students at Muhlenberg College.

Alex's hard work was publicly acknowledged at a USY Leadership conference held in Lancaster recently. Two other Lehigh Valley USYers attended with him.

The first event of the year, a dessert social, will take place at Temple Beth El in Allentown on Sept. 27 at 8 PM. All Jewish high school students are welcome to attend.

Yasher Koach to Alex and his family!

HADASSAH CONCERT TO FEATURE CELLIST CHAN, STRING THEORY

Cellist Nathan Chan and his renowned cello ensemble String Theory will perform at the 2014 Bethlehem-Easton Hadassah benefit concert. The cello only concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Banana Factory in South Bethlehem. Founded at Columbia University in 2011, String Theory fuses several realms of music including jazz, classical, pop, and rock. The ensemble performs original arrangements to audiences nationwide. The group has quickly risen as one of Columbia’s most popular performing labels.

At the Hadassah concert, String Theory’s members, Justin Zhao, Maddie Tucker, Steven Bennett and Chan, will perform a unique blend of classical and pop music. The concert will mark String Theory’s debut performance in Pennsylvania.

“String Theory is different from other musical ensembles because it features cellos only, with no other instruments,” Chan said. “The cello features a wide and diverse musical range, which makes it perfect to showcase any and all kinds of music.”

Chan said the group is excited about performing for Hadassah. “We can’t wait to showcase what is possible with our four cellos,” he said.

Featured in the British television documentary, “The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies,” Chan attends the Columbia University-Juilliard School Exchange program. He made a Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 12 and recorded with legendary singer Roberta Flack when he was 13.

Hadassah was founded on Feb. 24, 1912, when Henrietta Szold and a small group of women met in New York City. The concert benefits Hadassah and its support of the internationally known Hadassah Medical Organization, a leader in clinical care and research, serving Jews, Christians and Muslims, and providing a beacon of hope. Jewish and Arabic doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators work side-by-side at HMO’s two hospitals in Jerusalem, treating more than 1 million patients a year without regard to race, religion or nationality. HMO also provides extensive training programs for midwives, paramedics, and emergency medicine and trauma physicians and nurses at HMO and its territories.

Tickets purchased through Hadassah will provide admission for two and include a reception with homemade savory treats and desserts.

For ticket information, contact concert co-chair Roberta Diamond, 610-865-3357. Parking is free on site and across the street. The Banana Factory is at 25 West Third Street in Bethlehem, PA.

Every Sukkut the short Book of Ecclesiastes is read in the synagogue. It tends to be relentlessly pessimistic. It is "attributed" to King Solomon and concludes with a verse that is in opposition to what preceded. The sum of the matter when all is said and done: “Fear God Obey his commandments, For that is the whole duty of Man.” [12:13] One of the important sections includes “To every thing there is a season And a time to every purpose under heaven- - -” [3:1-8 ] And a central message is in the second verse "Vanity of Vanities --- All is Vanity" 1:2
