WEEKLY MEETING

Off to a shaky start as Jim P got confused with line three of the four way test. But good to see Phil and Kevin and specially good to see Pauline back after some weeks away from the

Club.

Carolyn announced the first fundraiser for our new Rota-ry year—a cabaret evening titled ‘Along comes Mary’ which will take place at the Somerton Park Bowling Club on 23rd August with tickets from Linda. See advert on page two). She also reminded us of the Changeover din-ner and a farewell to Pauline on 22nd June at Linda’s

place. Sadly (but happily for her) Pauline will be leaving on the Friday following.

Pam had a few brief words on the International Convention which she and a few others from the Club attended in Syd-ney. Please see her excellent report on page four. She also promoted little solar driven personal lights which would clearly be very handy in areas without electricity. She com-mended them to us as items to be packed for distribution on our overseas trips to ‘the islands’.

Phil took over and fined himself for not being able to re-member the name of the street where he lives. Pam got fined for turning up, against her trend, to a meeting after a long weekend. Linda paid for proclaiming that she was not going to speak and then managing to limit herself to five or so minutes! Finally, Bron clearly did a finable job on manag-ing the menfolk in her family. Frank owned a gold moment in his grandson playing hockey and John Yard for starting a new ‘falling down’ rage amongst his acquaintances.

Peter T introduced our guest speaker Kirsty Wildy who had previ-ously put in time with News Ltd and Anglicare and is now a Retire-ment Living Options Consultant with Mason-ic Homes.

After the computer problem was sorted out and the computer goaded back to life out of its hibernated state (we thought we saw Brenley pressing random buttons in desperation) Kirsty presented a well ordered PowerPoint presentation around the necessity of choosing a retirement lifestyle.

She first presented an outline of the operations of Masonic Homes and the website gives a good oversight of their vari-ous establishments and operations. Kirsty emphasized that the first step was to choose early and before choice become either difficult or impossible. Given an early choice, she out-lined the five possibilities—to stay in one’s own home, to downsize, to enter a residential care facility (which she pointed out is becoming less attractive to government un-less in clear need of substantial medical support), to take up residence in a Village and finally no choice. Her presenta-tion then went on to examine the pros and cons of each of these potential ways into retirement.

President’s Paragraph

After the long weekend and with morn-ings getting so cold, it was a good number of Rotarians at this morning’s meeting, listening to our guest speaker Kirsty from Masonic Homes. She gave us many facts on Independent living, and I would think that after looking at her audience, she

thought that she may get quite a few enquiries!!

The Fundraising Committee are getting an early start on their first Event for the new Rotary Year and it sounds won-derful. The evening features the cast of “Along Comes Mary” which has been a ‘sell out’ for last year and this year’s Cabaret Season. A Sherry on entry and a good sing-a-long sounds like a very fun and entertaining night. All you need to do is bring a Basket Supper and a few friends to Somerton Park Bowling Club, buy a couple of drinks at the Bar and then sit back and ENJOY!!

A reminder to current and new Board members, there is a Board meeting at my place next Wednesday 18th June at 7.00pm, a time to ‘inform’ and ‘handover’ to the new Board.

Also, our Changeover Dinner is on Saturday 28th June at Somerton Park Surf Lifesaving Club – can you please let Brenley know if you are attending.

I will be away for next week’s meeting and Brenley will be in charge – ‘thank you Brenley’ President Carolyn

In respect of the village, Kirsty pointed to a wide choice of styles, options and prices in relation to choosing a lifestyle, and to the very important aspect of the facilities offered and community living which can be enjoyed. Supported by a number of ‘happy’ photos, Kirsty underlined a number of times the difference that communal living could make to a happier, healthi-er and long-lived retirement life.

In response to a questions Kirsty clarified that Masonic offers no residential care but independent living only. She also indicated that useful information was availa-ble from both the government and from COTA. There is a large amount of material on the web in relation to retirement and aged care which is not hard to find.

Finding it hard to leave the past behind? Well so are the Marys. They love noth-ing better than sipping sherry and having a good sing-a-long. Take a trip down memory lane and join them for a night of nostalgia as they sing their way through the big hits of bygone eras. MEMBERSHIP CORNER

Our weekly focus on recruiting and retaining membership

Member Satisfaction Survey

Conduct a member satisfaction survey on an annual basis. Assess members’ satisfaction with the meetings, the service activities and the fellowship activities of the club. Solicit ideas from members for improving their Rotary experience. Design your own survey or use the survey contained in the RI Membership Development Resource Guide.

The Four Way Test Of The Things We Think, Say or Do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all Concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

June is Fellowships Month, a time to increase interest and membership in one of the dozens of Rotary Fellow-ships and celebrate the ideal of ser-vice through common hobbies and

It was not difficult to see and hear over 18,000 Rotarians and partners from around

the World. We all carried a bright yellow canvas bag and we knew who we were,

and they were because we were identified by our large Dog tag hanging around

our neck. We talked to other people from each corner of the globe. National cos-

tume worn by people from all over the world, during the 4 days.

The venue the grounds of the Olympic Games of year 2000. The facilities were out-

standing. Saturday “End Polio Now” walk 3K , Cathy Freeman Park. A sea of yellow t

shirts with End Polio Now. Amazing.

The opening ceremony after all the formalities .We were entertained by Human Nature, and everyone was

bopping and dancing in the aisles. Closing ceremony we were to experience the wonderful music of Marina

Prior and the 10 Tenors. Wow, and in between all of these acts we experienced outstanding speakers, Hu-

manitarian speakers, World Peace, Paralympic Medalist, ( contracted polio when he was 15 months old). The

list goes on. The Break out Sessions were interesting and some better than others. Several speakers one in

particular Tommy Spalding, New York Times, Best Selling Author and President of Spaulding Companies LLC,

made three very distinctive pointers. Throughout his life 3 points as told to him by a Rotarian have made

an impact.” Are you a Leader, Follower or Critic” .

Pauline, Linda and I also saw the Vivid Sydney Light Show, The Opera House in all its glory and the Har-

bour buildings a display of technology, light, and it was a photographers dream. People everywhere. The

House of Friendship was massive and everything going on in that pavilion from all over the World. eg. Inter-

national Fellowship of Geocaching Rotarians.www.ifgr.org

On our last night Linda and I took Pauline to see “The Lion King” at the Capital Theatre. So amazing. A must

see everyone.

We travelled three trains to and from the Convention every day, we walked so many steps, up one platform

down another, 695 steps one day,( down and back up) just went for a sight seeing walk !!!! in the Royal

National Park. Our host family were so welcoming and made the three of us so welcome, and feel at home.

They wanted us to see their lovely waterways and bush land. And it is lovely.

Sydney did it well, the NSW Government provided free transport throughout the Convention. The Rotary

advertising was everywhere, at the airport huge signage welcoming visiting Rotarians. TV news coverage ,

The walk over Sydney Harbour Bridge carrying the countries flags. Our Prime Minister, giving his opening

speech, and donating government funds to End Polio. I am so privileged to have been able to attend this

memorable event in my life. Our incoming President Rotary International 2014-2015 Garry C Huang from

Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan. Please read his words in the District Directory,” Light up Rotary”
