Club Bulletin

This week we enjoyed another visit from Dr Daniel Biro, political scientist and analyst from UniSA. His subject was Cuba’s Foreign Policy with the sub-title, ‘From Hard Power (Cold War) to Soft Power (post-Cold War).

Beginning with the explanation of a rogue state Dan-iel explored the paradox of Cuba exercising more in-fluence through the attraction of soft power via sport, tourism and in particular medical international-ism. Many of us were surprised that in terms of medi-cal statistics Cuba is a major player and contributor to world health. For instance, there are 37000 Cuban doctors and nurses serving in developing countries—more than the Red Cross, UNICEF and MSF put to-gether! We also heard of a medical response brigade comprising 1500+ doctors ready to deploy to a medi-cal emergency on 24 hours notice. Apparently Cuba played a leading medical role in the recent E-Bola emergency.

Daniel spoke too of the Latin American Medical School and its work in training large numbers of over-seas students for medical work, and of fourteen oth-er overseas medical schools supported by Cuba. The focus is on prevention, and Daniel asked the ques-tion, ’Why does Cuba do all this?” The answer was expressed in terms of solidarity, and Daniel explained that he was going to Cuba this year to in-vestigate his interest in that country and its medical mission in the middle of the year. We will look forward to hearing again no doubt!

Meeting 7th April

This week has been an inter-esting one with the club par-ticipating in a scatter meeting by attending other club meetings. Myself and Peter Thompson attended the Rota-ry Club of Eastwood's break-fast meeting at the Royal Coach Motel on Dequetteville Terrace, which is held at the same time as ours but on Wednesday mornings. They

too had a number of members away attending dis-trict conference so were glad to have us there to bolster the numbers. It was a good morning and in-teresting to see the similarities and subtle differ-ences in meeting procedures. I am looking forward to hearing members comments about their experi-ences at other clubs this week. We should always strive to make sure our club pro-cedures and activities are up to date and meeting the needs of our members. Yes, Rotary is about Ser-vice Above Self, but if our members are not getting what they want out of Rotary then it becomes hard work. With that in mind I will be circulating a survey in the coming weeks with an aim to get a snapshot of our members needs and what is important to them as members of the club and of Rotary. I would encourage all members to participate with an aim to ensuring our club continues to be a vibrant one and where we can all have fun making a difference for others less fortunate.

News from Board Meeting

14th April 2015

Treasurer’s Report:

As per report Service Account balance $4806.82 with $500 possible outstanding subs to come in.

Project Account - $11,462.43 as in report but $500 for Flying Doctors (14/7/15), St Judes $1,000 from Quiz Night, approx. $500 to be paid to Blind Sports from last Bunnings BBQ, $500 to ROMAC and $500 to Inter-plast which leaves approx. $8,000 in account.

It was decided to allocate further funds at the May Board meeting to leave a balance of around $5,000/$6,000 in the Project Account for the start of the next Rotary Year.

Discussion was had on whether to add $1,000 to the term deposit which we are using as a contingency ac-count for future replacement of the shed. Currently held in term account $5817. Alternatives were dis-cussed but it was decided that Michael should arrange for the extra $1,000 to go into term deposit as we had previously decided.

Fundraising Report

There may be opportunity for us to BBQ at Masters but at this stage it may be a bit slow there and not worth pursuing at this time. This will be investigated furtherh.

Fridays at Bunnings weren’t as profitable as we had originally hoped but the Board thought that as long as we were able to man the day with sufficient number of members the $400 - $500 raised each time was worthwhile. Thursdays previously offered at Bunnings would probably not be worth pursuing if we can still get Fridays.

It was decided that the funds raised from Bunnings BBQ on 10/4/15 would be allocated to Tutti.

Hands Project – Sacred Heart staff extremely busy during the first term but we have confirmed they are still keen to pursue in Term 2.

Community Report

Vocational visit to the Royal Flying Doctor facility at the airport has been arranged for 14/7/15. 7.00 for 7.15am. start. Able to accommodate 30-35 people so Rotarians will be able to invite partners if they wish. We will start with a session in the auditorium then go out to the hangar. It was decided we would not pro-vide breakfast but those who did not have to rush off could go to Subway or the Airport for breakfast.

Youth & Vocational Report

Sacred Heart College encouraged students to apply for NYSF to be held January 2016 but was unable to find any students who would commit to the program. The committee will keep in touch with Sacred Heart as they seemed very impressed with this program.

Latest BBQ

14th April 2015

Friday Bunnings BBQ Cash taken $665.05 less expenses $117.05 Net $548.00 Sat /Sunday Harvey Norman BBQ Cash Taken $821.10 Less expenses $330.00 Net $491.10

Jeff Kong, Director of Music at Brighton Secondary School is hoping to arrange a concert to raise funds to take 85 students (mainly choir members) overseas at the end of the school year. Peter Thompson is liaising with Jeff as to how our club can help and the Board approved the continuation of discussions along this line. It was felt that our participation would be a good way to promote Rotary and our club in the community. Would probably be a Sunday afternoon concert and it was suggested we could perhaps arrange/sponsor resi-dents of a local nursing home to go, help with ticket sales within the club and sale of coffee/cakes etc on day to raise funds.

Peter Thompson is also going to speak to the Principal of BSS about a “service above self” award as the Board has previously discussed – and check they don’t already do something similar.

Tony Maher, a teacher at BSS will be speaking to the club on 21/4/15 and we are hoping to establish a rela-tionship with him so we have a contact to approach to promote Rotary Youth Programs to BSS.

No students have applied to attend Rotary Adventure in Citizenship or Murray Darling School of Freshwater Research. There may be some applicants for the RYPEN Camp at $260 per student and Brenton asked that the Board approve this if suitable applicants are found. This was approved.

International Report

- Days for Girls Project with Woodcroft School… Slow to get off the ground. We have been in touch with Elisse the Woodcroft Sewing teacher last week and now the school on holidays the project may need to get going next term. We have kept Susanne Harris in the loop about the School. - Days for girls….several Club members and Kathy White packed bags for shipping couple of weeks ago at Linda's home. We packed 40 kits for Girls in East Timor. ( An associate of Sussanne Harris was flying to the area and was happy to take them with her) - Letter received from Trevor McQuirk asking for Clubs to allocate funds for his project in Cusco, Peru. More particularly donations from Clubs so he can raise $50,000 and then apply for a Global Grant.

Young helper Callum completed some community service and was by all accounts very helpful
