Rotary Club of Somerton Park Inc. | Chartered 7 April 1988 Club Bulletin The club has had a busy couple of weeks with a BBQ at Radio Rentals last Tuesday, a break- fast to cook for the workers at Minda's Trak Furniture to cele- brate Internaonal Day of Disa- bility last Wednesday, Christ- mas dinner & drinks at the Somerton Surf Lifesaving Club last Friday night, the drawing of our annual Christmas Raffle this week and 2 BBQ shiſts this Wednesday for the Taxi Council. With December being Family of Rotary Month it has been great to see some familiar faces back and engaged at the club and I have been really pleased to see a general liſt in club spirit. The breakfast at Minda's Trak Furniture last week was a success and definitely well appreciated by the staff. We were taken for a quick tour of the factory by one of the supervisors before the workers arrived and it was impressive to see what they achieve and the quality furniture they turn out. If you are looking for some solid mber furniture that is well made I suggest you go and have a look at their showroom. As well as furniture they are labelling paint ns for a local manufacturer and doing liquid fills for Foodland such as their home brand detergent. Last Friday night we had a great turnout for our Christmas dinner & drinks, nearly filling 4 large ta- bles. It was a wonderful evening with good food, fine wine, fellowship and laughter that saw the Somerton SLSC staff thanking us for our generous patronage, but ushering us out the door as the last to leave for the night. The conversaons connued outside for Presidents Paragraph 11th Dec 2014 while longer - a big success all round and a very enjoya- ble night. Finally a very big thank you to Michael Garland this week for organising and bringing to a close another very successful Christmas Cruise Loery that raised close to $15,000 in total or $12,000 aſter expenses. Though the number of ckets our club has sold through members was down a bit this year, the successful strategy of giving out ckets to local charies and or- ganisaons to sell on the basis that we will write them a cheque for what they raise has seen an increase, with over $8,500 already allocated to various charies. So well done to all involved and thanks to all members who sold ckets - I know it isn't easy and I hear the col- lecve groans when everyone is handed their 20 books, but when you look at what we achieve through this loery I think we can all be proud of the result. The Four Way Test Of The Things We Think, Say or

Do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all Concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and bet-ter FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con-

kid selling post cards some money or not. Do you presumably support the family by buying a card whilst potentially denying the child an education by encouraging them to remain on the street.?

Anh was challenged at a deep level to think different-ly about community goals and her future career, and both experiences have clearly, for me at least, affirmed the value of our Rotary support for young people widening their horizons and undertaking community involving experiences. Anh was grateful for our support and will go on to reward our contri-bution to her.

Malcolm A offered this slogan which he saw in her presentation:

We make a living out of what we get We make a life out of what we give.

A Club Banner was presented to Peter and Gary.

11th Dec 2014

We began by welcoming Rotarians Peter and Gary from the Rotary Club of Yea in Victoria who were over for the cricket.

Michael provided us with not only the figures for the 2014 raffle but also those of the previous two years so that members could see how we were tracking. The net gain for this year’s raffle was nearly $12000. Duncan attended and thankfully did not draw a colleague in first place, but still did manage to draw a colleague for I think the final prize offered.!

Brenton introduced our guest speaker Anh Caprile. Anh is just finishing a Mas-ters at Adelaide University. Anh had also attended RYLA and with her CV of involvement is clearly a person interested in and committed to her fellow human beings.

Anh told us a little of the intensity of the RYLA experi-ence, which proved a useful backdrop to her journey to the University Leadership Symposium in Cambodia which was the subject of her talk titled ‘My Khmer Journey’. Her time centred around the people she attended with, the experience of meeting Geraldine Cox and visiting her Sunrise Village, and the guest speakers she heard who were clearly inspirational.

What was clear to all of us was the impact the trip had on Anh. She was ‘invited into their r culture’ and was deeply affected by the work being done for unwanted children by Geraldine Cox and others. She pointed up the often ignored conundrum of whether to give the street
