This week we have changed our meeting to coincide with the Group 8 meeting on Wednesday night. To those who have responded thank you and to those who have not decided I am sure it is not too late to come along and enjoy a fellowship evening with some good company. October is a very important month for our club with two fundraising activities in full swing. Wine sales are an important part of our fundraising program and also a great fellowship day when the bottles are labelled. Our raffle is in full swing and we continually receive positive feedback on what a great job we do in sup- porting such a vast array of needy organisations. So please canvass your friends and rellies for wine and raffle ticket sales so that we can support those programs which make us such a unique club Be a gift to the world Mike

Previous Meetings

On 29 September we had as Guest Speaker, ProfRobert Bryce Saint speaking to us on the fascinatingsubject of Genetics.Rob is an expert in his field having earned his PhD atAdelaide University, worked in genetic research atStamford University in the USA, returned to the Univer-sity of Adelaide and now heads up the Department ofGenetics at Flinders University.Rob introduced his topic by referring to the concept ofgenes as shown in research by Darwin and Mendel inthe mid 19th century.Genetic information of living things is encoded in theirDNA and in these times, DNA analysis is available fora relatively low cost. This analysis helps define “TheWay We Are”.It is also absolutely true that our genetic “map” is in-fluenced by outside factors not obviously part of he-reditary genetics. For example, sometimes identical twins can haveclear differences, for example hair colour.Rob made reference to other influences which are notin themselves hereditary and used the example of theDutch “Hongerwinter’ (Hunger Winter) of 1944 whenthe Netherlands civilian population was subjected tosevere starvation at the hands of the Nazi occupyingforces. Children born during and immediately afterthis period were small and short and their childreninherited similar changes and problems.

Our meeting on 6 October was the official visit of DGDick Wilson and Liz together with ADG Dini Whyte. The Club Board met with Dick, Liz and Dini fromaround 6.30am and discussions were still going onuntil our scheduled meeting start at 7.15am.Dick stated that one of the most enjoyable of his tasksas DG is visiting the 50 clubs in our District and seeinghow they each differ but all prosper within the familyof Rotary.Dick’s father was a GP in Renmark and also a Rotar

-ian. Dick himself became a country GP at Strathal-byn, then at Stirling and was a Rotarian in bothplaces. Through Rotary, there are always opportu-nities to help people and “to make a difference”.This is a philosophy which we all subscribe to andwork towards.Dick mentioned the District alumni project headedby PP Peter Hammond as an ideal recruitingground for new members.Dick and Liz support “Donate Life”, the organ andtissue donation program as their “make a differ-ence” project during their term of office.

That’s Life!

On the first day, God created the dog and said, sit all dayby the door of your house and bark at anyone who comesin or walks past. For this I will give you a life span oftwenty years. The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. Howabout only ten years and I'll give you back the otherten?"And God said that it was good.On the second day, God created the monkey and said,"Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh.. Forthis, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That'sa pretty long time to perform. How about I give you backten like the dog did?"And God again said that it was good.On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You mustgo into the field with the farmer all day long and sufferunder the sun, have calves and give milk to support thefarmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixtyyears."The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me tolive for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back theother forty?"And God agreed it was good.On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat,sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give youtwenty years."But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possi-bly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, theten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back;that makes eighty, okay?""Okay," said God, "You asked for it."So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, playand enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave inthe sun to support our family. For the next ten years, wedo monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And forthe last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark ateveryone.Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for this valuable informa-tion. I'm doing it as a public service. If you are looking forme, I will be on the front porch.

AG Dini Whyte, President Michael Garland, DG DickWison and Sergeant PP Rosalien van Loon duringthe DG’s visit on Tuesday 6 October
