Meeting 21st April

This year's Rotary calendar has no special designation for the month of May, however next year's calen-dar designates May as Youth Ser-vice Month. I see no reason why we can't adopt this theme a year early and turn our minds to youth and youth service, as they will pro-duce our future leaders. And after

hearing the inspirational words and advice of Tony Maher from Brighton High School last week, I be-lieve we will be in good hands. We are developing some good contacts in our local schools and look forward to supporting and guiding our local youth in future programs and endeavours in the near future. And speaking of youth, a big welcome this week to our newest member Michelle Yip, our first member under 30. Michelle is extremely keen and ready to get out there and make a difference, and I look for-ward to her involvement and contributions to our club.

Finally I would like to pause and think about the thousands of people who are now suffering in Nepal after the worst earthquake in that country in 80 years. There has been over 4000 deaths, widespread devastation and destruction of buildings across the country which has left an environment of fear and expectation of more tremors with people sleeping outdoors. We have recently donated funds to Shel-terBox which is timely given that they are sending an initial 500 shelter kits to Kathmandu to help the thousands of people who have been sleeping on the streets. The board is meeting again in a couple of weeks and we will consider if there is more we can do to help those affected.

have both been areas of excellence claimed by the school.

Tony went on to speak of his personal background and his experience as a counsellor. One problem of note he deals with is bullying and he spoke at length of the program on coping with bullying, including the steps and techniques he teaches students to deal with and deflect bullying. He was pleased to claim that bul-lying at BHS was down to 4.5% compared to 20% of students state/nation-wide who are bullied in one way or another. He indicated that the old-style pun-ishment of the perpetrator approach has been found to be quite ineffective and that the new approach of the whole group engaging on a ‘shared concern’ basis has yielded much better results.

Tony mentioned also the wider responsibility for men-toring students through the behaviours that come with lack of self-esteem, including self-harm, anxiety and depression. This approach includes working with staff to equip them to help students, and the role of grandparents as coaches, specially in the emotional sphere. He emphasized the importance of connecting rather than controlling in the mentoring role.

Tony finished by informing us of his commitment to gathering both quantitative and qualitative data on his counselling activity, something which he believes should be widely practiced by schools to provide solid evidence and insight for student problems and behav-iour and for outcomes.

Jim S introduced Stephen Carthew as our guest speaker on Sir Hubert Wilkins. Stephen sells roses to support his academic habit as he studies for a fur-ther Ph. D. and described both his ascent into rose selling and his experiences of selling roses to Jim!

28th April 2015

Stephen stated his intention to not so much to tell us what Wilkins did as to describe his discovery of and journey with Wilkins and finding out what made him tick—what he believed and what sort of person he was.

Incidentally Stephen told us of Wilkins’ interest in spir-ituality and the Urantia book, and his own venture into helping start an alternative religious community and his participation in that as a minister.

Stephen char-acterized Sir Hubert as an essentially good man who lived an ex-traordinary life which would qualify him as arguably the most famous of all Australians.

He mentioned Wilkins’ faith and belief that he was protected, and describing a night landing in the polar region one could easily believe it. He won military honours, took a leading and active interest in aviation and clearly was into most things innovative and fu-ture. Of special note was his guiding vision of the place of polar climatology in influencing our weather and his witnessing the establishment of polar weather stations prior to his death.

Sir Hubert Wilkins was a modest man who did not pro-mote himself as many modern heroes do and so does not enjoy the status he should. With a little help from Jim we heard of an amazing array of interests and achievements, and it is clear that Wilkins is someone worth investigating. An excellent talk seeking to look behind the achievements to the basis of the achieve-ments.

Combined Meeting 12th May

14th April 2015

28th April 2015

A reminder that the week after next week will be our combined Group 8 meeting. So we will have no meeting on Tuesday 12th May but will instead have a joint meeting on Monday night at the Som-erton Surf Lifesaving Club, starting 6:00PM for a 6:30 start. Meal will be two courses and cost will be $21.00. The guest speaker for the night is Kieran Murphy. He has 5% vision and up until recently was teach-ing swimming at Marion. He trialled for the last Para Olympics team and just missed making the team for the visually impaired by less that a sec-ond. He is now teamed up with a visual cyclist and will trial for the next Para Olympics as a cyclist. He is still involved with swimming as the coordinator of training at Marion. Kieran also has an amazing outlook on life and has ventured into comedy to highlight his disability as well as making people aware that there are no boundaries for people with a disability. On the night there will also be a raffle. This is a night for partners as well as Club members. So could I please have an indication of who intends to come and numbers please asap. I need to provide numbers to Holdfast Bay by cob Thursday 7 May together with any special dietary requirements. Brenley

Our Board has generously voted to host a Family Fun Day for the students and families of Our Lady of La Vang School (OLoLV). For our most recent members of the Club, OLoLV school is a Catholic, co-educational, non graded special school catering for approximately 60 students aged from 5 to 20 years with an intellectual disability and/or multiple disabilities.

This event will enable both Mums and Dads to enjoy the day with their children; an opportunity that sometimes is difficult to organise for many families.

The letter was sent to each family and to date around 70 people are looking forward to 3 May 15.

We will need some volunteers to assist in cooking the barbecue however the Board considered it would be a good opportunity for our members (and family) to come along and enjoy fellowship, meet the OLoLV parents and see the happiness our Club has brought to the students.

Should you wish to volunteer and/or just come along for the day, would you please let me know.

I can be contacted preferably by email or on 8376 2185 .
