President’s ParagraphsThank you to those membersand partners who were ableto attend the Group 8 com-bined meeting last week. Itwas a good fellowship oppor-tunity and we also heard agood guest speaker. It is al-ways worthwhile visitingother clubs to witness how
they may do things and if we might be able to learnsome new ideas to strengthen our own club.
Guest Speakers are always hard to find so if you seeor hear of someone that you think would be a goodspeaker for our meeting please contact Peter Thomp-son with some details so that he can arrange an ap-propriate date. Thank you to Rajni for nominating Law-rence as our guest speaker last week
Wine orders are still being taken by Linda so if you areable to sell some wine please contact Linda urgentlyas our wine bottling day is not far away. Please alsoconsider submitting raffle tickets as soon as they aresold so that we can proceed with payment of theprizes prior to the draw
On Friday 30th October the “Stars of Minda” awardsare due to be held and this is an event that the clubshould be particularly proud to be involved as it wasan event initiated many years ago and now has signifi-cant corporate support. It must surely rate as one ofour most significant achievements
Wednesday night’s board meeting again containedsignificant discussion on membership and I urge allmembers to think about someone that you thinkwould make a good Rotarian and ask them to comealong and witness a meeting and what we do.

Previous Meetings
Our scheduled meeting of 13 October was cancelledand instead there was a Group 8 meeting on Wednes-day 14 October hosted by the Rotary Club of Glenelg. As it happened, other Group 8 clubs were not repre-sented but 13 Somerton Park members and partnersattended.Guest speaker at that meeting was Robert GordonMenzies who was named after the former Prime Min-ister and founder of the Liberal Party of Australia.Robert is a novelist and he spoke on the backgroundbehind some of his novels.“Culture Shock” is a story of a young girl from hishome town who received little respect, love or atten-tion from her parents and after becoming pregnant, having the baby which was adopted out by her par-ents, she eventually made a good life for herself inLondon.“Webs of Deception” was inspired by his time at KnoxGrammar School in Melbourne and details the down-ward decline of a school principal.Other books of his such as “Moroccan Gold” and“Killing is Catching but Sex Doesn’t Rot Your Teeth”were discussed.Robert’s anecdotes of his life were amusing, some ofwhich showed what could be called “novelist’s licence”but still good stories.Robert had a supply of his novels available at themeeting and he announced that he would donate $5from any books sold on the night to Australian RotaryHealth. This was to go with the takings from the raffleand the hats donations at the meeting.
Our meeting on 20 October was back at the Motel andwe were pleased to welcome back some of our over-seas travellers. Good to see Malcolm, Lyn, Linda andPam after their absence. Our guest speaker was Law-rence Kongwa, introduced by Rajni.Lawrence is a physical trainer in Glenelg and spoke onthe need for physical exercise to maintain wellbeing ,
prevent injury and to increase strength.“Exercise is done against one’s wishes but contin-ued because the alternative is worse”. Muscles contract and relax. Muscles work on the joints they cross. Muscles work best in the direction of their
fibres. Muscles become weak mainly from sitting
and other general inactivity.Exercises, such as walking, and stretching are of-ten needed to reactivate muscles which have be-come weak.Diet– most things in moderation.
