Prof saint is at the University of Adelaide and will be introduced by Jim Stevens. 6 October On 6 October we have the official visit of DG Dick Wilson . Last week we listened to not only a very good speaker in Peter Christopher tell us about the “City of Adelaide” project, but we also learnt about a man with a passion and vision. For years he has followed a path full of obstacles and challenges that seemed in- surmountable but seemingly he has never waived. Part of his vision has been achieved but there is still a long way to go and I am sure that we all hope that he is successful in reaching a successful conclusion to this project. People like Peter Christopher are an inspi- ration to us all. Thank you to all who attended on Tuesday, especially guests Lance and Lee Bin and it was great to see Rob and Maryanne Harding and Peter Ochota back after lengthy holidays. It was very pleasing to see so many still in the room talking 20 minutes after the meeting had closed. The next month promises to be quite busy with the DG’s visit on Tuesday 6 October, the day after the public holiday and I urge all members to make the effort to attend and hear about what is happening in our District. We also have a Group 8 meeting in the evening of Wednesday 14 October at the Glenelg Function Centre and again I urge our members to at- tend to enjoy some evening fellowship, hear an excel- lent speaker and support Mental Health through Aus- tralian Rotary Health. On Sunday 18 October , we have a stall at the Marion Market to promote Polio Plus with the Rotary Ute be- ing part of the promotion. We will also have our now regular Bunnings BBQ which has been a great fund- raiser for the club. Please support both activities. Australian Rotary Health Generosity We all willingly support our own Rotary Health Pro- gram, Australian Rotary Health through the collec- tion of change in the collection bowl which circu- lates during each weekly meeting. The amount collected totals more than $500 over a full year and is normally topped up from other fund- raising activities. I know that he wouldn’t want a fuss made of it but Frank White has generously donated $1000 to Aus- tralian Rotary Health and is now a “Silver Friend” of the Fund. Well done Frank and do hope that you are enjoying the Rugby World Cup. Finally, Alison and I have sent out an invitation to everyone to come to a BBQ and watch the AFL Grand Final at our home in Forestville and it would be good to see as many as possible enjoy a wonder- ful day of fellowship. Regards Mike

Previous Meetings

On 15 September we had as Guest Speaker, KatrinaLancaster-Maggs, accompanied by her interpreterGerry. Katrina was born totally deaf as were her par-ents and was speaking to us via sign languagethrough her interpreter Gerry on her involvement withDeaf Youth Australia. This organization exists Australia wide and is associ-ated with similar groups around the world. The ages of members of members of deaf Youth Aus-tralia range from 10 years to 30 and support campsare held regularly for groups of deaf people of ages 10to 12, 13 to 17 and 18 to 30.DYA operates independently but is associated with theWorld Federation of the Deaf.Katrina works for TAFE SA as a lecturer teaching signlanguage to both deaf people and to interpreters withnormal hearing.AUSLAN is the most common form of sign languageused in Australia and it was fascinating to see howquickly Gerry was transforming the sign language ofKatrina into the spoken word.

At our meeting on 22 September we had as GuestSpeaker, Peter Christopher, the main driving force be-hind the retrieval, transport and restoration of the Clip-per ship “City of Adelaide”. Peter was introduced byBrenton Aird who has connections to an immigrantancestor who travelled to South Australia in the late1800’s.The ship was built in Sunderland in the UK in 1864and undertook 23 return voyages between Londonand Adelaide. With the arrival of steamships, the ves-sel was sold into the North American timber trade andworked there for 6 years. Foe the next 30 years it wasused as an isolation hospital near Southampton andended up as Naval clubrooms on the River Clyde inScotland. It sank while moored there and was re-trieved and moved onto a private slip at Irvine in 1989It remained there until rescued by Australian

volunteers and transported to Port Adelaide in2014. The process of transporting the ship towhere it sits currently on a barge at Dock 1 PortAdelaide is a story itself. A heavy lift ship with two450 tonne cranes, quarantined and fumigated atRotterdam and unloaded here is part of that story.

The vision is for the “City of Adelaide” to be thecentrepiece of a seaport village at Port Adelaide. So far around $6M has been spent on the projectwith a further $5 to 10M, mainly in kind, needed.A good ongoing story!

Jim P suggested that we meet a few times a year at avenue away from the Motel. Suggested were War Mu-seum, Keswick with breakfast at Solar Eggs and per-haps the Australian Submarine Corporation anothertime.Brenton advised that the Project Account balancewas $11 059, the Club Service Account had $6038and the Term deposit had $6891.

There was a long discussion on the bearing of costsassociated with the production of a Wild Dog de-struction DVD. The club would provide $500 to$1000 towards the estimated $3000 production costprovided the remainder was pledged from othersources.

Summary of Board Meeting2 September

The lease papers for our new shed at Brighton havenot materialised and it was suggested that we needa copy of the previous lease. Rosalien will checkthrough the lease once we get it. Brighton Club areclearing remainder of their property. {Power will beconnected and be in our name. Cost sharing betweenDistrict and Brownhill Creek Club to be resolved. The idea of holding a plant sale in the shed was dis-cussed and will probably happen 3 or 4 times a year.We have set a date (27 November) for a club break-fast meeting to be held there.

Later news is that some members are meeting at theshed on Thursday 24 September to organize shiftingour equipment in. It appears that the co-occupiershave moved in and we need to determine our spacerequirements now.

Christmas Raffle: 500 tickets have not been distrib-uted. Brighton Secondary School has been given1500 tickets to sell for their Cambodia project.

School of St Judes sponsorship has been reduced tosupporting one boarding room instead of two.

Membership Director Jim advised his thoughts of theneed to recruit more new members just to cover re-tirements over the next few years. A “new members”evening was suggested. Use our major functions, egQuiz Night, to promote Rotary to the audience.

A Young Professionals Forum was attended byBrenley, Peter H and Michelle. Some excellent andchallenging ideas presented.

Harvey Norman BBQ’s have been cancelled for restof the year. Likely to have Bunnings once a month onFridays.

Help Needed

Most members would be aware that Phil Gamblewill be undergoing heart bypass surgery in the nearfuture. (29 September)Members wish Phil every good wish at this difficulttime. He and Liz are looking for a home to live in from midOctober and any offer of help would be gratefullyaccepted by both of them.

Grand Final DayPresident Michael and Alison have kindly offeredtheir home to all Rotary Club members and partnerson Saturday 3 October to watch this year’s AFL GrandFinal from 12 noon. Please bring your own drinks , meat for a BBQ andeither a salad or dessert to share
