7 JulyOur meeting on 7 July will be Michael’s first asClub President so lets have a good attendance.Our speaker for the morning will be our own RajniLalsinghani who will be speaking on Bollywoodfilms. From what I have read, the Indian film indus-try is enormous and it produces thousands of mov-ies each year to satisfy the needs of cinemas andtelevision.

People who saw the Marigold Hotel films would getthe idea of the colour and movement in many In-dian films.

14 JulyOur meeting on 14 July will be a vocational visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Base at Adelaide Airport.

This has been arranged by Malcolm Axford andmembers are asked to assemble in the MastersHardware car park off Sir Donald Bradman Driveat 7am. There is a short walk from there to theRFDS facility as a group.

Bring money for breakfast after we have finishedthe tour, Malcolm has suggested breakfast at Sub-way. Please advise Malcolm of your attendance.

President’s ParagraphsIt is with great pleasure that Imake my first written com-munication to the membersof this great club.Firstly to Brenley congratula-tions on being such a goodPresident and it is testimonyof your leadership that in yourspeech at the changeover the

club achievements were quite remarkable for a clubof 30 volunteers. Well doneTo all those who helped at the changeover lunchthank you and in particular Pam Maxwell who kept iton track and on time. The day exceeded my expecta-tions (and they were very high) and I was buoyed bythe enthusiasm and the positive vibe. It was great toshare the day with Alison and part of my family, and Iwas really pleased that so many partners could alsoattend because they are such an important part ofwhat we do.The rotary theme this year is “Be a Gift to the World “and it will no doubt mean something different to all ofusI would like to think that we could start to think strate-gically and look beyond the immediate year and makeour gift to the world a decision to build a club thatcould last 20, 50 or even 100 yearsSurely there could be no greater gift and such a giftwould be truly amazingSo what would it take to build a club of such strength?A club the envy of all other clubs .A club that standsout as the number 1 choice of any and all individualsconsidering joining a local service clubWhile I don’t know the answers it obviously involvesincreasing our club membership and I think it wouldhelp if we had a flagship project that could provide aspringboard to the future consolidation and growth ofour club. I am sure many of the members will haveideas and I look forward to hearing them.

Experience has shown me that quite often the finalproduct looks nothing like what the initial idealooked like due to improvements added along theway so we should never be afraid to put forward ourthoughts.I will address membership and projects as the yearprogresses because they are integral parts of build-ing a strong and resourceful club.

Thank you to Jim Parkins for coordinating the TaxiBBQ and all those who helped on Wednesday It wasa great start the new Rotary Year .

Last Meeting

Our Changeover lunch on Sunday 28 June wasa very enjoyable event held at the Glenelg GolfClub. The venue, as always, was magnificent,the food was excellent and the companysuperb.Past President Brenley outlined some of high-lights of his year as President and paid tributeto the support he had received from his teamand all members of the club during the year.

PP Pam Maxwell chaired proceedings admira-bly, and kept proceedings moving along well.

All members present were very pleased to seePP Linda Sweeney awarded a Paul Harris sap-phire for the work that she has done on behalfof the club. A report on this award is printed onPage 3 of this Bulletin.

The Handover of the role of President wentsmoothly and President Michael presented themembers of his Board to members and guests.A full coverage of last year’s activities fromPast-president Brenley is given in the AnnualReport of the club, a copy of which was given toeach member present.

Club Award

At our Changeoverlunch on Sunday 28June, LindaSweeney wasawarded a Paul Har-ris Sapphire in rec-ognition of her untir-ing work on behalfof the club, in par-ticular for her ef-forts in promotingthe “Helping Hands’project. This projectis directed at as-

sembling artificial hands to be fitted to victims oflandmines in Sri Lanka and soon in Cambodia. Theproject was introduced by PDG Terry Daly and hasbecome an International project of choice under thedriving force of Linda. She has promoted the projectat the Colonnades Shopping Centre and at localschools.In addition, Linda has been involved in the muchneeded “Days for Girls” project for young girls in de-veloping countries.A much deserved recognition to Linda from allmembers of the Rotary Club of Somerton Park.
