Editor, Superior Sun: There are two groups of people in Superior who made the holidays especially nice for the children at Head Start. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize them. They were generous enough to buy, wrap and donate Christmas gifts, (toys, jackets, and boots) to our Head Start Preschool

students. They spent their time and money to make our students happy and also their parents, who are very grateful. FCCLA members Ariel Alonzo and Mariza Padilla are fine examples of the caring and thoughtful High School students in our town. They “adopted” our students and made sure they each had gifts.

Letter to the Editor: Community members help make Christmas special for preschoolers

They made arrangements for Santa to visit the students. All this was done on their own time when they could have been doing “teenage” things. They are positive role models for our young students to learn from. The second group is the Superior Senior Citizens. Pam, Armando, Diane, Corina, Jackie, Jessie and Barbara also brought several wrapped

presents and spent time talking with the preschoolers. I’m sure they were others involved in this, and thank you also. I know the parents also are thankful to all of you. Thank you all for thinking about our preschoolers and going out of your way to make sure they have a happy Christmas. Sincerely/s/ Hilda CardenasSuperior Head Start Director

The intersection of Highway 60 and Main Street, commonly known as the “Y”, just got a facelift. In addition to a bright sign directing people to Downtown Main Street, a major planting effort took place. Weeds were pulled, fill dirt added, boulders and decorative rock were placed here and there and many native plants now fill the area. The enhancement is sure to attract new people who will “Discover Superior.” All of this was accomplished by local companies donating money, products and time. This project was made possible by APS, Modern Woodmen, Lotus Landscape Design, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Albo Guzman Trucking, Kalamazoo Rock and Superior Environmental Services. The Superior Chamber of Commerce coordinated the efforts. (Sue Anderson photos)

Sprucing up Superior ...

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center Staring us in the face

is a brand new year, filled with unforeseen challenges, new opportunities and life changing experiences.

We will enter new territory, walking a new road and seeing new sights. We have a choice: we can do it all by

Pastor’s Cornerourselves or choose to be guided by someone with far more knowledge and experience than we have. Psalm 23 says that regardless of the difficult path we are on, we can be led and guided without any fear. The presence of the Lord will protect and comfort us, keeping us safe. We all need that for this coming year. In 1 Chronicles 28:10 it says, “Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.” King David is letting Solomon know that God has chosen him for a special job that he must do as his life’s work. The Scriptures tell us that we too, have been chosen by God for a purpose. As a Christian, there is a calling and a plan for our life. If we choose to obey God’s direction for our life in this New Year, we will find His comfort, peace and blessings. If we choose to do our own thing, we will find countless frustrations and difficulties. If you choose a resolution to follow each year, give it a new twist this time. Ask God to help you choose a goal to accomplish, with His guidance and insight. Then, listen for His instructions on how to best accomplish it. Thank Him for each accomplishment and success. Try to not be selfish in your choices. Look for ways to help others, being a blessing to them and not a hindrance. Honor God in all that you do, by giving it your very best try. Above all else – do and say everything with love. Without love as the key ingredient, you are nothing but a loud noise in a crowd. You will have no effect on anyone. May God richly bless you and have a very happy New Year!

By Taylor Beard A representative of Cobre Valley Medical was present at last week’s town meeting to give a brief update on the progress of the clinic that will be opening in Superior.

The clinic is due to be finished on-time in February, even with the setback of being asked by ADOT to re-align the entrance to the clinic with Mary Drive. The new clinic will boast

5,000 square feet, ample room for the 10 planned exam rooms, three provider offices, X-ray and Pharmacy. Currently Cobre Valley is planning on moving their current Physician’s Assistant

Update on the new Superior Cobre Valley Medical Clinic

from the existing clinic to the new facility and is in the process of looking for General Practitioners to fill other positions. The clinic is also currently searching for a cardiologist to work out of the clinic. It is planned that a general surgeon will come to the clinic weekly.

The Warren Charities has awarded an Amateur Competition grant to Superior Little League. The $2,000 grant presented at the Superior Little League Baseball Field on Dec. 10 is to supplement the cost of replacing bleachers which have deteriorated through age. Superior Little League, established circa 1950, is located in Superior, a small mining town in northeastern Pinal County with a population of just over 2,800. The League provides organized activity, structure and role models for more than 170 youths ages 4-16. Superior Little League

The Warren Charities awards grant to Superior Little League

accepts athletes regardless of their ability to pay registration fees, and offers reduced fees for families with multiple players. The grant will also help ensure that costs of registration for the next season are kept as low as possible. The Warren Charities was established in 2005 for the betterment of Pinal County. Since its inception, The Warren Charities has been able to provide grants for basic educational needs and public protection and safety in addition to grants for amateur competition and sports, all within

Pinal County. The Warren Charities also considers grant requests for hospital comfort and for victims of abuse. Funds for grants are raised from tax-exempt contributions from individuals, businesses and other organizations, participation with fundraising events and collection of recyclable materials.
