SABIE het al die ander dorpe in Suid-Afrika uitgestof en is aangekondig as die Rapport en Kwla se Dorp van die Jaar. Dit is n ongelooflike prestasie as in ag geneem word dat Sabie gewen het met n stemtal van 71 902. Lady Grey was tweede met 64 677 stemme en Prins Albert derde met 62 759 stemme. Sabie is gele op die bolope van die Sabie

rivier en die plato van die Drakensberge, aan die voet van die Longtompas. n Kombinasie wat tot die ontstaan van die mooiste watervalle gelei het. Al strek Sabie se geskiedenis eeue ver terug, gaan ek net konsentreer op wat tot die ontstaan van die dorp gelei het. Sabie se hoogte maak dat dit nog altyd malariavry was en die ideale plek vir jagters was om hulle basiskampe te vestig. Tydens n jagtog wat Henry Glynn gelei het, was n rots raak geskiet wat n

goudrif ontbloot het. Dit het mense soos vlie gelok. Die natuurlike woude was afgekap om vir mynbedrywighede aan te wend. Dit is n 9 km teerpad tot by die valle en n 200 m gerieflike stap om die waterval met die hand te groet.

Clamping down on crime

Representatives of different businesses in the CBD and the SAPS were in conference last week to discuss crime in the CBD in Lydenburg.

A shoplifting analysis was discussed by the Lydenburg SAPS last week with their business partners in the CBD. Cases reported between May to June 2011 and May to June 2012 increased by 116.6%. Statistics show that shops are mainly targeted in the day time, the highest crime levels are between 12:00 and 18:00, especially between Thursday and Mondays. Saturdays are the highest. The police said that needs to be corrected. If a person has an intent to steal a chocolate they can have an intent to steal anything. The public and business owners need to be pro active in combatting crime. Groceries are the target of the most theft. All shop owners are urged to employ security guards, and where possible security cameras should be installed.

HIERDIE is omtrent die 300 ste storie in hierdie kolom. Ek skrik nie vir politiek nie, maar in die meer as 6 jaar bly ek weg van Godsdiens. Eenvoudig omdat dit n persoonlike saak is en een wat met respek bejeen moet word.Nou wys statistiek dat al hoe meer Suid Afrikaners nie meer erns het met Godsdiens nie. Hierdie is n probleem.Miskien dink mense die Here het hulle verlaat, maar ek dink dit is andersom. Mense het n nuwe god en ek dink dit is die

geldgod. Dit is al waaroor dit gaan.n Mens se geloof aan God het nog altyd n anker gebied. Ons leef in baie slegte tye. Selfmoord, misdaad, ongergdheid en n algemene onmin met ander is gewoonlik die gevolg van Goddeloosheid.Ek glo die algemene toestand in Suid Afrika is een van die gevolge van Goddeloosheid. Nou sal sielkundiges, akademici en sulkes vir my s ek is simpel. Misdaad is te wyte aan armoede. Korrupsie is te wyte aan apartheid of sulke snert. Daar is glo n verklaring vir alles, wetenskaplik gefundeer en nagevors, maar God kom nrens in hierdie navorsing en redes voor nie.Een van die probleme is die interpretasie van Godsdiens. Die Jood, die Christen, die Moslem se God en baie ander se interpretasie is basies dieselfde van een Skepper, of Argitek van die Heelal. Die

probleem is dat ons groepeer en vas glo die ander se interpretasie is verkeerd en van die pad af. Geen verdraagsaamheid of naasteliefde nie. En ons maak oorlog oor hierdie ernstige saak. En stelselmatig stort ons almal die afgrond na Goddeloosheid in. Veral as ons n bietjie mag en geld het. Dan is ons onvernietigbaar. Hierdie hele probleem is direk die oorsaak van ons verlies aan moraliteit en ordentlikheid. Dit is waarom die wreld in anargie, gesinsgeweld, alkoholisme en algemene agteruitgang verval. En dit gaan nie beter word nie. Wat nie sal help nie is eie interpretasie, die vorming van sektes, kerke en quasi gelowe soos ons daarvan hou. Nee, ek glo dit is diep persoonlik. Dit is jy, jou familie, jou Bybel en jou verhouding met God, wat jou lewe definieer. Dit sal nie met ons land beter gaan alvorens ons terugkeer na God nie.

Soos julle almal seker gehoor het, was Riaan in 'n baie ernstige motorongeluk op die Pietersburg pad betrokke. Hy het ernstige hoofbeserings opgedoen, en is steeds in 'n koma. Hy het ook 'n pelvis fraktuur, en albei sy heupe is uit die potjie met gevolglike ernstige weefselskade. Riaan is 'n baie kranige sportman, en dit gaan 'n baie lang tyd neem voordat hy weer kan loop, om nie eers te praat van die gebrek aan inkomste omdat hy nie kan werk nie.Lientjie bly tans in 'n gastehuis om naby hom te wees, en hul 6 maande oue babatjie, bly by haar ma in Burgersfort. Haar ma ry ook nou 2-3 keer per week deur Pietersburg toe, sodat Lientjie darem die baba ook kan sien. Hierdie gesin gaan deur 'n baie moeilike tyd, en het ons almal se hulp en gebede baie nodig.Ongelukkig het hul mediesefonds nog nie in

The Methodist Church is planning to run an Alpha Course starting on Thursday 30 August at 18:00 and every Thursday evening for approximately 11 weeks. The Alpha Course looks at the basics of the Christian faith and allows us to re-examine some of the issues we may not have thought about since confirmation and ask the type of questions we had not thought of when we were younger. A typical evening consists of a meal, a talk and group discussion. Manuals cost R31 each and must be ordered so if you are interested in joining the course please contact Ena at the church office on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings from 08:00 to 12:00 at 013 235 2936. n Tyd gelede was n artikel geplaas ivm skoolkinders wat n taak moes voltooi vir gemeenskapsdiens in die Highlands Panorama Nuus.Ek was weer versoek om n kind te help met so n taak. Hierdie keer was die bedreigde kransaasvol die onderwerp. Van die nege endemiese aasvols in Suidelike Afrika kom een in hierdie omgewing voor. Die bedreigde kransaasvoel (Gyps coprotheres) bly soos die naam s, in kranse.Die vol, het n vlerkspan van 2 550m en weeg tot 10kg. Aasvols vreet dooie diere, en

vervul so n baie belangrike skakel in die voedselketting. Groot roofdiere vang en vreet eerste aan die prooidier. Dan vreet hyenas en jakkalse weer verder. Laaste vreet aasvols die res op. Na die vreettydperk, rus die vols voordat hulle weer vlieg. Tydens die rusperiode vreet die volwasse vols ook klein stukkies been om kalsium in te neem.Hierdie beentjies en kos word aan die kleintjies in die nes gevoer. Aangesien daar nie groot roofdiere by ons is om die bene te breek nie, moet die restaurantbestuur dit doen. De Wet Venter, graad sewe, het hiermee gehelp. Die terrein waar die aasvols gevoer word, is ook skoongemaak van alle gevaarlike items, soos draad of plastiek en al die groot onbruikbare bene is verwyder. A British girl has been left blind after an airbag inflated and hit her in the face during an horrific car crash. Kelly Green was a passenger in her fathers car days before her 16th birthday when it hit a pothole, collided with the central reservation and flipped on to its roof. She had to be cut from the familys BMW 3 Series sedan and was taken to hospital for surgery. She h a s n o w h a d f i v e operations. But doctors say she will never see from her right eye again and there is only a slim chance of regaining the sight in her left. She is learning Braille and touch-typing, and is trying to walk with a cane. Kellys mother, Bev, 49, said: You dont think an airbag could cause as much damage as this. Both of the airbags went off in the crash, and the one in front of Kelly hit her straight in the eyes. She will definitely not get her sight back in the right eye and her left eye doesnt look promising. She will be having further surgery and we are hoping there could be a chance that one day she will regain the sight in that eye. Neighbours, family and friends are all rallying round to raise funds for specialist equipment. Mrs Green added: Our lives have been turned upside down but Kellys positive attitude is keeping us going. It hasnt affected her. She is still the same, the only difference is she cant see.

Her father, a 47-year-old postman, added: Her face was a complete mess afterwards. The impact pushed her right eye back into the socket. But amazingly we survived when we could easily have been killed. Kelly said: I was upset when I was told Id lost my sight. I thought people wouldnt talk to me. But I want people to know I havent changed. I have just had to adjust to everything, Im still the same girl and Im not going to give up. Some things are a bit harder but Im getting used to using my cane now. I am still going to school but I am hoping to go to college and then do a masseuse course because its something I can do with my hands. A BMW spokesman said: We are saddened to hear of the injury to Kelly Green while she was a passenger in a BMW. We would welcome the chance to inspect the vehicle to carry out a thorough investigation. Should we be asked, we would fully co-operate with any third party investigation. DRIVERS opting to buy used tyres are putting themselves at risk, according to campaign group TyreSafe. In a UK sample group of 50 worn tyres, TyreSafe found that 98% were being sold illegally. Even more alarming was that more than a third of the tyres inspected were found to be dangerously non-compliant. One tyre was described by an inspector as having "the potential to kill" as it still contained a metal object penetrating 5cm through the tread.

TWELVE years ago, Argentinians Herman and Candelaria Zapp hopped into their blue 1928 Graham-Paige car and have since driven through 42 countries across the world. The couple met when Candelaria was only eight, and Herman 10, sharing a dream of travelling the world. But then we got married and you have to work and there is so much fear of leaving everything behind, said Candelaria. However, they did not want to start a family until they had fuffilled their dream. Candelaria left her job as a secretary and Herman, then an IT specialist, did the same. January 25, 2000, was the date they set to depart for Alaska. Three days

before that, a friend of Hermans offered to sell him a car. Thinking of the t r i p ahead , He rman d e c l i n e d , b u t w a s persuaded to at least take a look at it. It was love at first sight, he said. With $4000 (R32 500) in their pockets, the couple set off on their four-year-long trip to Alaska, which they initially thought would take six months. The hardest part was leaving home - with people asking what we would do if we were hurt, kidnapped, or if the car broke down - having to answer questions we did not have answers to, said Candelaria. The car did only 55km on the first day before breaking down. When we left, we were warned that people would hurt us. But we were never told that people would help us, Herman said. They met a blacksmith in Argentina who fixed the cars damaged wheel, taught Herman a trick or two on how to manage it, and they were off again. But, when they eventually arrived in Alaska, it was not joy or fulfilment they felt, but sadness. We realised our dream was over. But then we thought it could be the beginning of another dream, she said. Another joy they experienced during their trips was parenthood - four times to be exact. Their eldest boy, Pampa, 10, was born in the US. Their second boy, Tehue, now seven, was born in Argentina. Their daughter Paloma, 4, was born in Canada and their youngest, son, Wallaby, was born in Australia. The two eldest kids are home-schooled by Candelaria and enrolled in a correspondence course. Herman believes they learn more than other kids by travelling the world. They have seen Mount Everest; witnessed Nasas space shuttle launch in Orlando in 2007; visited Hindu and Mayan temples and took a trip down the rivers of the Amazon. They learn about the world, in the world, and not from books while sitting in a box. But the greatest joy for the Zapp family has been meeting new people. Even when they came to South Africa, they were not sure how they would be treated because of the countrys historic background. But the kindness they have been shown has blown them away. In KwaZulu-Natal, they were invited to a traditional Zulu wedding. On top of that, 20 strangers from Pretoria, who have read about them, have offered to give them free accommodation during their brief stay in the city. Their three-month visit to the country will have to be extended, they said. They have been given shelter by more than 2 500 families over the past 12 years. Through the kindness of others they have also been able to ship their 84-year-old car from continent to continent. If I close my eyes, I just see a lot of faces. I do not think of the Grand Canyon, the beautiful islands of the Philippines or the Great Wall of China, but of people, who I miss the most. If you see the Eiffel Tower once, you have seen it and may not want to return. But if you have made friends, you want to go back and see them again, Herman said. He recalled a family in Peru who invited him and his family to spend a night in their home. The walls of the one-roomed house were made of cane, and the ground beneath their feet was exposed. But the family offered the Zapps all the food they had and gave them their mats to sleep on. In the morning, they apologised for not having enough to give us, when they had given us everything, Herman said. WHEN the original 300C HEMI was launched in the US in 1957, it was the fastest, most powerful production car built in that country at the time and came to be known as the beautiful brute. This moniker applied as much to the previous-gen 300C, which made its local debut in 2005. The benchmark during development for this car was the Lexus GS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, BMW 5-Series and Audi's A6. It had its work cut out against such formidable competition and achieved only moderate success, with 1 200 models sold in seven years. After test driving the new version on the Garden Route, it was clear the 300C stands a better chance than ever against the established brands.The line-up includes the Luxury Series 3,0L V6 CRD (R539 990), which produces 176 kW at 4 000 r/min and 550 N.m of torque, the Luxury Series 3,6L V6 (R479 990), which puts out 210 kW and 340 N.m of torque, and the much-anticipated 6,4L HEMI V8 SRT8 (R629 990), the protagonist of this review.The new 300C has been revised in many ways compared with its predecessor. The exterior sports a new mesh grille and 20-inch polished face aluminium wheels on all three models, while Chrysler has opted for satin-chrome on the mirror caps and door handles as opposed to the high-gloss chrome seen before. Blackened chrome upper and lower grille surrounds and wheels in a similar finish are standard on the SRT8, which sits 12,5 mm lower than non-SRT8 models. This model also has a revised rear bumper and 100 mm dual exhaust tips.Inside, the SRT sports a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel with a satin-chrome rim section and flattened bottom with an inset SRT8 logo. Paddle shifters are standard across the range. The carbon-fibre trim in the SRT8 is replaced with wood trim in the other models. The latter finish, which appears quite old-school, dates the otherwise-impressive cabin somewhat. The 300C features Chrysler's largest touchscreen infotainment system (8,4-inch) with Garmin navigation, which is standard across the range.I was excited to see what the SRT8 could do on the open road; after all, it produces 347 kW and 632 N.m of torque. It is mated with a five-speed automatic transmission, unlike the eight-speed used in the other models. The SRT8 delivered on most of my expectations, but the demure power delivery proved somewhat disappointing for a performance saloon. Then again, this car weighs two tonnes. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, a number of the roads we were meant to drive were closed. So, I got to drive the SRT8 only in a straight line on the N2 between Knysna and Storms River. Therefore, I cannot comment on cornering or handling. In a straight line, at least, the slight vagueness in the steering system at dead-centre does imbue the car with a stable feel at cruising velocities.Except for road noise generated by the SRT8's substantial tyres and a faint engine drone at highway speeds, the 300C should prove very adept at long-distance cruising. That said, it proved a tad cumbersome in town driving due to its size and visibility through the shallow glasshouse.The new 300C may have lost some character compared with its Pimp My Ride-style predecessor, but it posseses more mainstream appeal and should find favour with a wider buying public, especially considering its competitive pricing

Chrysler 300 C still a very cool car THE Constitutional Court will hear arguments as to why it should overturn an interim interdict preventing e-tolling in Gauteng from going ahead this week.

Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance chairman Wayne Duvenage said on Friday: "It's on Wednesday and were very prepared for the case." He said all the paperwork was done and the council was prepared for the argument on Wednesday, August 15. "We trust that the panel of judges will see the merit of our case and keep the interdict in place until after the full review in November," Duvenage said. According to the interdict granted by the High Court in Pretoria on April 28, a full review first needed to be carried out before electronic tolling of Gauteng's highways could be implemented. The SA National Roads Agency Ltd and National Treasury are appealing the order. Finance minister Pravin Gordhan applied to the Constitutional Court to set aside the court order preventing Sanral from implementing e-tolling. Gordhan argued that Judge Bill Prinsloo had

ignored the principle of the separation of powers. He said the decision to halt e-tolling would negatively affect the economy. In its reply, the alliance said Sanral was still not ready to launch the project. On Monday, the Democratic Alliance said it had applied to join the Constitutional Court case. DA MPL Jack Bloom said: As a political party, the DA has an interest in the key issue in this case, namely the extent to which courts can and should exercise their powers to interdict government." The party had asked to be admitted as a friend of the court to

make a "substantive contribution" to the case. "The alliance has not opposed our application, but Sanral and the National Treasury have indicated their opposition," said Bloom. "If government wins, then expect to see more decisions like the e-tolls pushed through without proper consultation." The High Court in Pretoria will hear further arguments in the e-toll case on November 26. Under the project, motorists would pay over R0.35 per kilometre to travel on some of Gauteng's major roads. Beware of tyres that are too bigFITTING much bigger wheels and tyres to off-road vehicles is popular.These wheels improve ground clearance and look good, but there is a price to pay, apart of course, for the price of the tyres itself. A wheel and tyre assembly is balanced and the rotating combination runs true. This turning combination takes on a so called gyroscopic effect, which means that it wants to run the way it does, resisting hopping and turning inputs from the steering. In effect this means that when hitting potholes or bumps at speed, the wheels are upset, sometimes causing them to shimmy. On a modern 4x4 this shimmy effect is taken care of by the suspension, steering linkages including power steering and the steering shock absorber.However the heavy wheels w r e a k h a v o c w i t h suspension systems.Suspension bushes, rose- and ball joints and shocks take a lot of strain and may even break. On wide rims with too large an offset to the outside, the wheel will also want to turn outwards or tramline under braking. At least, you will experience premature failure of all suspension components. If you have to go up on tyre size, lower the tyre profile one size for each inch bigger rim that you fit, or rather stick with your standard diameter rim and go up one profile size on the new tyre only. This is often a good idea, for the pityfull sidewalls on ultra low profile tyres offers you no protection against pothole damage whatsoever. Rather go smaller on the rim and fit more (higher) tyre profile, but remember to keep as close to factory sizes as possible. Our focus is to encourage I N N O V A T I O N a n d DEMONSTRATIONS which create a great deal of visitor interest. By working closely with the mining community, we can fully customise our exhibitions to meet the specific needs of the mining industry. We are fully committed to bringing exhibitions that are not only beneficial to the various regions and mines, but used as a vehicle for feedback, training and very importantly education. DIE naweek van 4 Augustus het die Platorand Uithourit Klub hul jaarlikse uithourit in Dullstroom aangebied.Baie geluk aan Jakkie Mellet, op IBN Crown, wat 'n eerste plek in die 80 km kompeterende afdeling met n wentyd van 04:29:53, en gemiddelde spoed van 18 km/h, behaal het.Monique Roeloffze het ook puik gevaar in die 121,6 km kompeterende afdeling in n tyd van 08:17:33 en 'n gemiddelde spoed van 14,66 km/h.Wilro Roeloffze het die 60 km trapleer suksesvol voltooi. Ook n groot dank aan die Platorand Uithouritklub, onder leiding van Willie en Annemarie Roeloffze, wat weereens n uiters suksesvolle rit aangebied het. Wel gedaan!

Promising a fun filled weekend with loads of adventures on a Bush Camp near Burgersfort.Die kamp is gerig op jong mense tussen die ouderdomme van 10-18 jaar. Die naweek sal gerig wees op die Junior Jagters se skietvernuf en oorlewingstegnieke. The camp concentrates on all the facets of ethical hunting. This includes practical shooting, identification and survival techniques. New shooting exercises have been included to make it more fun and competitive for the Junior Hunters.
