The University of Santo Tomasis the oldest university in thePhilippines and in Asia. It is thelargest Catholic Universitylocated in a single campus.

UST was founded on April 28, 1611by Archbishop Miguel deBenavides, O.P., together with Frs.Domino de Nieva and Bernardo deSta. Catalina.

Initially named Colegio de NuestraSeora de Santissimo Rosario, inhonor of the patroness of theDominican Province of the Holy Rosary,the institution served as a preparatoryschool for priesthood. Eventually, theschool was renamed after St. ThomasAquinas, the greatest theologian of theDominican Order.

UST used to be in Intramuros Manila, but due tothe growing number of enrollees, a new campuswas built in Sampaloc in 1927. During the SecondWorld War, UST Intramuros was totally destroyed.

The Arch of the Centuries located at the Espaagate is a reconstruction of the doorway of USTIntramuros. Its back portion was constructed

out of the remnants of the original doorway.

Pope Paul V and later Pope Urban VII,through Papal Briefs, granted Colegio deSto. Tomas de Aquino the power toconfer degrees in Arts, Philosophy, andTheology

On November 20, 1645, throughthe Papal Bull InSupereminenti, Pope Innocent Xelevated the Colegio de SantoTomas to a University.

In 1785,out of gratitude to USTadministrators and studentswho defended Manila againstBritish Invaders, King Charles IIIof Spain named UST a Royal

University.

On August 7, 1681, through the Papalbrief Instrutabili, Pope Innocent XIestablished the Faculty of Canon Law.

This was ratified by Pope ClementXII on September 2, 1734 with the

Papal Brief Dudum Emanarunt.

Through the Constitution Quae MareSinico, Pope Leo XIII confirmed the

privileges and honors conferred on UST byhis predecessors. With the same decree,Pope Leo XIII gave UST the title ofPontifical University

In 1906, Pope St. Pius Xestablished the Inter-diocesanSeminary, now known as theUST Central Seminary.

On April 30, 1947, Pope Pius XII

honored UST by giving it thedistinctive privilege of being calledThe Catholic University of thePhilippines

USTs academic life was interrupted

twice: First by the Philippinerevolution against Spain (1898-1899)

And then again during the SecondWorld War (1942-1945) when UST wasused by the Japanese as aconcentration camp.

Manuel Colayco, after whom the UST Colayco Park wasnamed, was mortally wounded at the gates of USTduring the Liberation of Manila. This battle at the gatesof UST was instrumental to the release of Americanprisoners of war.
