SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS HOKIE COW CLASSIC 2008

DAIRY FARMERS OF AMERICA

SCHOLARSHIP Dairy Farmers of America is one of the most diversified manufacturers of dairy

products, food components and ingredients in the United States. DFA is a cooperative, owned and operated by the dairy farmers they serve. They have over 4,000 employees, and their cooperative members make up 34% of the nation’s

dairy producers. We are very pleased to have Dairy Farmers of America as a Platinum sponsor for the sixth annual Hokie Cow Classic, and as the sponsor of a named scholarship. The 2008 recipient of the DFA scholarship

is MALORIE RHODERICK from Mount Airy MD. Malorie is the daughter of Wayne and Lucinda Rhoderick. Malorie is a rising senior who has been active in 4-H and state breed association activities since she was young and has always helped with merchandising and field work on her home farm.

Malorie worked on a progressive dairy last summer, and has become a

regular contributor of articles to the Holstein World. She has just been elected Secretary of the Dairy Club, and completed a year as President of Sigma Alpha. Malorie chaired the committee that produced one of the best “Milky Ways” in years, and is a key member of the selection committee for the Showcase Sale.

Malorie was on the judging team that won the North American International Dairy Cattle Judging Contest last fall, where she was high individual in Guernseys, Holsteins, and Oral Reasons. This summer Malorie will work for Alta Genetics and then spend 4 weeks in Australia representing the American Milking Shorthorn Society.

Somehow, she spares the time to be a Dean’s List student, and she is paying for 100% of her college expenses. Obviously, Malorie is ambitious, smart, and talented. She is one of our best, and we’re proud to award her the 2008 DFA scholarship.

MARYLAND & VIRGINIA MILK PRODUCERS

COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION

SCHOLARSHIP Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association, Inc. is a regional milk marketing and processing cooperative serving nearly 1,500 dairy farm families from Pennsylvania to Alabama. For more than 80 years, Maryland & Virginia has had a long-standing tradition of integrity, service and supplying high quality products to the

marketplace. We are very pleased to have Maryland/Virginia as a Platinum sponsor for the sixth annual Hokie Cow Classic, and as the sponsor of a named scholarship.

The 2008 winner of the MD-VA scholarship is

CHRIS POTTS of Purcellville, VA. Chris is the oldest son of Mike and Nancy Potts, and is the mainstay on his home farm and very active in 4-H and dairy youth activities. He’s a smart,

motivated, talented student and will start in the fall as a Dairy Science major.

Chris was caption of the 4-H Quiz Bowl team that won the national contest last fall, and has been especially active in community service activities, leading his 4-H club’s efforts to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief.

He’s starting center on his local basketball team (living proof of the adage that you can’t coach height!), is a member of the National Honor Society, and is president of the Virginia Junior Holstein Association.

You can see why we are looking forward to working with Chris Potts and are proud to name him the winner of the sixth annual Maryland-Virginia Scholarship.

ALLTECH, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

Alltech, Incorporated, based in Nicholasville, KY has for over 25 years researched, developed and manufactured

natural ingredients for use in animal, alcohol and food production. Their feed additives, mycotoxin binders, and mold inhibitors are some of the best in the industry, but less well known is their manufacture of Kentucky Ale beer, and their Institute of

Brewing and Distilling. Alltech has over 1,500 employees worldwide and a presence in 85 countries. We are excited to have them as a Gold Sponsor at the sixth annual Hokie Cow Classic, and as the sponsor of a named scholarship. The recipient of the 2008 Alltech

scholarship is RYAN HAINES, the son of Michael and Anita Haines of Taneytown, MD. Ryan is a rising senior, and is another of these Dean’s List, very involved kids paying for all of their own education. But if you’ve met Ryan, you know there’s nothing ordinary about him.

He is the high-energy class clown who drives his teachers nuts, but when it comes time to get things done, he’s all business. Ryan was on the judging team that won the contest in Louisville last fall,

was just elected 2nd Vice President of the Dairy Club, and will serve as selection chair for the first LIVE Showcase Sale next December.

He’s an Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and is in charge of planning the Dairy Club’s trip to Italy next January. Ryan is a logical fit for the Alltech scholarship because he has a long-standing interest in nutrition.

He won the paper contest at the Southern American Dairy Science Association meetings this spring with his paper on conjugated linoleic acids, and is doing an internship this summer with Renaissance Feeds.

HORIZON ORGANIC

SCHOLARSHIP This year we have a new scholarship sponsor, Horizon Organic. For 16 years, Horizon Organic has been a leader in the

organic movement. Horizon Organic began in 1992 with a cooperative of small organic dairy farms in Wisconsin. They now source organic milk from over 360 family farms and cooperatives across the country, and are

the nation's leading brand of certified organic milk, with a full line of USDA certified organic dairy products.

The recipient of the inaugural Horizon Organic scholarship is

SAMANTHA DAVIS, daughter of Randy and Rita Davis from Philadelphia Tennessee. Sam is a rising senior with a strong interest in food processing. She’s from a certified organic dairy, and has focused on marketing dairy products since before she came to Virginia Tech.

Sam worked as concession stand manager at her local baseball park, and has become a very active member of the Dairy Club, leading the club’s largest fundraiser, milkshake sales at football games.

This past summer she interned at one of the largest dairies in the state, and earned praise for their (pretty fussy) manager for her work ethic. This summer, she’ll gain similar experience working on a large dairy in California.

Sam is a smart, hard working, great people manager, and is a sure bet to succeed in the future. We are proud to name her recipient of the Inaugural Horizon Organic scholarship.
