FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Tiger Fans!

“This Is Our Moment” is the motto of our team this year. I like that, don’t you? You can sense the commitment and drive in that statement. These students have worked hard and they are ready to seize the moment. Because of that hard work, and because these Tigers are ready to move, they’re going to surprise many opponents. That’s going to be fun to watch, and it will make for a strong year for the Lady Tigers under Head Coach Lane Loyd. Although the media guide gives facts and figures about the women who play and the men who coach, we also hope that you’ll be able to see their hearts as they play the game. We hope you’ll notice their character as well as their competitive drive. And we hope that you know they are as committed to academic pursuits as they are to win-ning on the court.

At East Texas Baptist University our student athletes are student athletes. These women are not playing for a scholarship, but for the love of the game. And, we play basketball because we believe it contributes to the educational mission of the University. These students are learning not just in the classrooms, but in team meetings, through diligent prac-tice, by lifting weights and conditioning their bodies, in one-on-one conversations with coaches and fellow players, and on the court. As a University, we’re also committed to the truth found in Scripture that re-minds us, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” 1 Timothy 4:3. This basketball team is being fit for success in this life and the life to come. That, to me, is a good reason to cheer them on.

Go Tigers!

Kent ReevesDirector of Athletics 903-923-2228 [email protected]

Kent Reeves completed his 12th year as full-time athletic director at East Texas Baptist University in 2008-09. Since stepping down as the all-time winningest coach in Lady Tiger basketball in 1997 to become full-time AD, Reeves has guided ETBU’s

transformation from NAIA and NCAA Division II sta-tus to full membership within NCAA Division III. Under his watch, the program has ballooned to 10 varsity sports from the five that existed when he became athletic director on June 1, 1997. “We’ve added football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s cross country, and we’re looking to add men’s and women’s tennis,” says Reeves when looking back over his first decade as athletic director. “I’d say an-other one of hte real positive things I’m proud we’ve been able to accomplish is that we have also built some first-class athletic facilities as well as making nice upgrades to our existing facilities.” Reeves joined the ETBU coaching staff in 1987 as the head coach for women’s basketball. Taking over a program that was 10 years old at the time, Reeves quickly built an NAIA national title contender that averaged over 20 wins per season in his decade on the bench. In his 10 seasons as head women’s basketball coach, Reeves posted 206 wins and his teams won five Big State Conference championships and made nine postseason appear-ances. He stepped down following the 1996-97 season to become the university’s full-time athletic director while also taking on another challenge. As part of the university’s expansion of the athletic program, Reeves agreed to also become the head coach of a softball program that would begin play in the spring of 1998 as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference. His first recruiting class produced an eventual six All-Americans over the next four years, and Reeves piled up 83 wins in three full seasons as head soft-ball coach. In his third season, in 2000, the Lady Tigers won the first American Southwest Conference championship in the history of ETBU athletics since the university had become a member of the ASC and Division III in 1998. Following that season, Reeves gave up coaching to focus on his athletic director duties. Football was added in the fall of 2000, along with men’s and cross country, giving ETBU 10 varsity athletic sports. When Reeves arrived at ETBU in 1987 as women’s basketball coach, only three programs -- men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball -- existed on campus. But in his first four years as athletic director, the university had added softball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and football. Reeves went back into coaching in 2004, when he had to step in and take over the softball program once more due to a mid-year coaching change. Taking over a senior-laden program that had won the ASC champion-ship every year since he’d left, Reeves coached the Lady Tigers to a school-re-cord 41 wins as well as helping ETBU attain its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in any sport. He also guided the Lady Tigers to a fifth straight conference championship that season. He immediately stepped down again following that season, but came back to take over the program for a third time in the summer of 2005. After coaching the softball team in 2006 and 2007, Reeves once again took off his coaching hat to assume athletic director-only duties. However, in his six total seasons in the dugout, Reeves compiled a 183-84-1 mark and is now the university’s all-time winningest coach in two different sports. Reeves is also very active in the Marshall community, serving vice president of the Marshall Lions Club as well as serving as a deacon at Central Baptist Church. In his time away from the office, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and working in his yard. Reeves received his Bachelor of Science in Education from John Brown University and also holds a Master of Science in Education from Arkansas State University. Kent and his wife, Mary Beth, have two daughters, Kendra and Taylor. Taylor is a sophomore at Baylor University, while Kendra is married to Austin Skipworth.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

Beautiful and cozy as the home of ETBU’s indoor athletics programs, Ornelas Gym-nasium is one of the top basketball/volleyball arenas in the American Southwest Conference. Ornelas Gymnasium, as a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, was built in 1995 and replaced Keys Gymnasium as the home to ETBU basketball. Although Keys still stands as an intramural facility, it is on the east end of the complex that now includes Ornelas Gym on the west side and Dean Healthplex in the middle. Ornelas Gym has bowl-stype seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes bleacher seats at floor level, reserved chairback in a mezzanine level and upper level general admission bleachers. ETBU students are allowed in the floor bleachers, typically across from the Tiger bench, to give the home fans a nice up-close view of the action. It also provides a nice homecourt advantage for the Tigers. Ornelas Gym has become a tough place to play for visiting teams in the Ameri-can Southwest Conference. The Tigers went 8-6 in their home facility during the 2007-08 season, and those eight wins all came in conference play. ETBU won eight of its final 10 home contests of the year, including a six-game home winning streak at one point. During that stretch, the Tigers came up with wins against Mississippi

College, Texas-Tyler and Texas-Dallas, three teams that finished above them in the overall ASC East Division standings. Beginning with ETBU’s only ASC East Division championship in men’s basketball in 2002-03, the Tigers have gone a combined 47-27 at home in the last six seasons. That’s a winning percentage of .635 in the “House of Blues.” In five of those years, ETBU has won no fewer than eight home games at Ornelas Gym. In the summer of 2007, the gym floor received a facelift. ETBU’s trademark tiger-eyes logo was added to both baselines, and the floor was completely refinished with ETBU, ASC and NCAA logos added. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, Dean Healthplex was also constructed in 1995. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean, the healthplex opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym and houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters and both free and machine weightlifting stations. Dean Healthplex also has four racquetball courts. All healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students. The complex also includes offices for athletic director, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball coaches, as well as kinesiology faculty.

ETBUHEAD COACH

Lane LoydHead Coach, Lady Tiger Basketball903-923-2239 [email protected]

Head coach Lane Loyd and his 2008-09 Lady Tigers spent their first year together pretty much just get-

ting to know each other. Loyd was hired late in the recruiting process during the summer of 2008, which led to the first-year coach and

his staff not having much of an opportunity to develop relationships either on the

recruiting trail or with the players already on campus. But with a year under their belts and with a very solid recruit-ing class entering 2009-2010, both

Loyd and the Lady Tigers are looking to but a couple of lean years on the

court in the program’s rear-view mirror. Loyd and his staff spent the offseason looking to rebuild a program

that has won just 17 games the last two seasons. That’s five less wins than the 2006-07 ASC East champion Lady Tigers won. To that end the Lady Tigers have brought in 16 new faces to team with returning seniors Satara Harrell and Kar-lee Wilson, with 13 of those newcomers

transferring in with some college playing experience elsewhere. It’s a start to the reloading pro-cess, but Loyd knows it’s just a start. There are many potential speed bumps on the

road to success, especially in a deep and talented American Southwest Conference

and, in particular, a very strong East Division of the ASC. But building off a modest two-game win streak to end last season, including a win over ASC East champion and nationally-ranked Texas-Dallas in the next-to-last game of the year, the Lady Tigers surged into the offseason searching for talent on the court and character off of it. “Obviously we have a lot of work to do,” Loyd said as he, his staff and players headed into the offseason last spring. “We just have to get better, in all areas. There are lots of ways to get better, but the primary ones are the players in your program have to improve throughout the offseason, and of course, you have to go bring in players who fit the program and can help you. We will be looking to get better in all areas this season.” Loyd was named the ninth head coach of ETBU’s women’s basketball program on June 4, 2008, and he returned home to the East Texas area looking to help the Lady Tigers recapture the type of momentum the program enjoyed just two short seasons before his return. Since taking the job in the summer of ‘08, Loyd has worked to rebuild the Lady Tigers’ roster through recruiting, its confidence through attitude, and its future with a foundation that stresses doing everything right in practice, in games and in the classroom. Those are the type of principles he was literally raised on growing up in nearby Avinger, Texas, where his father, Ken, built one of Texas’ most successful and storied boys basketball powerhouses at the Class A level before retiring in 2008 and joining his son on staff at ETBU. “First of all, I feel like I’m doing what God intended for me to do,” says Loyd. “I grew up with a coach as a father, and I’ve been around the gym my entire life. So this is a natural move for me to come back and have the opportunity to return to a place like East Texas Baptist University. It’s a great situation for me and my family, coming back to an area where we have friends and family...We are excited and ready to get this program back to where it should be.”

In coming back to ETBU, Loyd returned to a place where he enjoyed one season as an assistant coach for Tigers head coach Bert West back in 2001-02. And after being out of coaching while working as an admissions counselor for University of the Ozarks’ teacher education program in Clarksville, Ark., Loyd says the challenge of putting the Lady Tigers back among the elite in the ASC as well as the opportunity to come home to East Texas were things he could not resist when considering the opportunity. “This is home for us,” he says. “We go into this with our eyes open and know-ing exactly what this university if about. There’s a spirit about campus that you don’t find most places. It’s a great place to be.” Loyd took over a program at ETBU just one year removed from a 22-win season and undefeated run as ASC East champion against division opponents in 2006-07. The Lady Tigers finished that season with a 22-5 mark and were a missed layup at the buzzer from advancing to the program’s first championship game appearance as a member of the ASC. That year marked the end of a three-year run to the postseason for ETBU, including back-to-back tournament semifinal appearances. But after having been favored to win the East again in 2007-08, the pro-gram slipped to 8-16 and missed the postseason for the first time in four years. “This program has had some success in the past and was very close to climbing the mountain very recently, so it’s been proven that it can be done,” says Loyd. “We’ve got to recruit the right players and keep them around to grow in our program as we move forward, and we’ve already started the process. “The main thing I am shooting for, of course, is to win. That’s the bottom line for me. I want us to win in everything we do, on the court and in the class-

room. Every single member of this program must be commit-ted to winning in all areas. We want our program to be fun and exciting for our players and our fans and winning makes things a lot more fun than the alternative.” Loyd has certainly been around winners throughout his career. As a player at the high school level, he was an all-state point guard for his father Ken at Avinger in 1986 before mov-ing on to play collegiately at Austin College. While in college he spent his summers working basketball camps for some of the game’s most well-known and respected legends, including John Wooden, Pat Riley, Jim Harrick, Bill Walton and Magic Johnson. Loyd remembers driving Wooden home every day from the camps, soaking up the knowledge on a one-on-one basis from one of the game’s most high-profile winning coaches. Loyd entered the coaching field and was on staff at David Lipscomb University in Tennessee for two years, from 1993-95. While at Lipscomb, Loyd worked under coach Don Meyer, who in 2008-09 became the all-time leader in collegiate coaching victories. Under Meyer, Lipscomb was the winningest program at any level of college basketball during an 18-year period, averaging 31 wins and just three losses during that time. Loyd has also spent 10 years as a high school head coach, with stops at Decatur, Avinger, Chapel Hill, McLeod and Baird. Following his one year on staff at ETBU, in which the Tigers went 12-12 but established the core of a team that went on to win the program’s only ASC East championship to date the next season, Loyd returned to finish graduate work at Sul Ross

State University in Alpine, Texas. Lane and his wife, Denise, have a son, Chiam. The Loyds are members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall.

Ken LoydAssistant Coach, Lady Tiger Basketball903-923-2239 [email protected]

After being hired as ETBU’s head coach prior to the 2008-09 season, Lane Loyd didn’t have to look far to find a veteran influence for his coach-ing staff. Ken Loyd, Lane’s father and a Texas high school coaching legend on the court, was added to the staff with the primary purpose of helping the Lady Tigers recruit more effectively at the

high school level in Texas.

“I can’t think of anyone out there who could help us more both on the court and off with his knowledge, his experience and his coaching contacts,” says Lane Loyd. “He’s been a great addition to our program.” It is on the recruiting trail that Lane wants Ken to help rebuild the Lady Tigers. Ken Loyd retired in 2008 as head coach at Avinger High School in Avinger, Texas, a Class A school north of Marshall. In 42 years as a head coach, the last 21 of which were spent at Avinger, he racked up 851 wins three state championships. At the time of his retirement, Ken’s win total was the third-highest career win total by a coach in the history of Texas boys high school basketball. Ken served as president of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in 1981-82, and he was named the East Texas Coach of the Year in 1977, 1987 and 1996. He also coached in the TABC All-Star game in 1984 and in 2006. Ken was also inducted into the Austin College Hall of Honor in 2005 in Sherman, Texas.

COACHING STAFF

Carlos MarbotAssistant Coach, Lady Tiger Basketball903-923-2236 [email protected]

Lady Tiger assistant Carlos Marbot will be in his second season on the ETBU staff in 2009-10. Marbot was a four-year letterman for the ETBU men’s basketball program and joined the new Lady Tigers coach Lane Loyd’s staff in the summer of 2008. Marbot played for the Tigers from 2004-08 and finished up his playing days at ETBU in 2007-
