Paul Grant completed his fourth season at East Texas Baptist University in 2010, and the Tigers missed a return trip to the American Southwest Conference Tournament by the slimmest of margins. In the end, the Tigers’ failure to make the conference tournament came down to, of all things, the weather. Leading Louisiana College 3-0 with 32 minutes remaining in the game on Oct. 23, the contest was halted due to rain and lightning in the area. A couple of hours later the rest of the match was cancelled due to the weather -- 12 minutes shy of being an official NCAA game. That meant the conference standings would be determined by percentage points, and the Tigers’ .528 conference winning percentage was good enough for just eighth in the conference -- two spots out of the postseason. The result was disappointing in a lot of ways for Coach Grant and his team, which had stormed to the conference playoffs in 2009 for the first time in three years. ETBU went 2-0-1 against three of the four teams directly above them in the standings, with two of those teams -- Howard Payne and Concordia Texas -- slipping into the postseason ahead of the

Tigers despite losing to ETBU earlier in the season. ETBU also returned a good portion of the 2009 playoff team, having lost just two seniors from the postseason qualifier. The Tigers had been picked as one of the top

six teams in the conference in the ASC preseason poll of coaches, media and sports information directors. Not making the return trip was disappointing, but Grant is chalking the experience up to part of the process as the Tigers continue rebuilding the program. “We did not achieve our goal of going back to the postseason and that is ulti-

mately disappointing for us,” Grant said following the season. “Any time you don’t accomplish what you set out to do at the beginning of the year, it feels like a setback.

But I’m looking at the big picture here, and that is we didn’t have a single senior on this year’s team and just a handful of juniors. Our team was still driven by young

players, freshmen and sophomores, and will only get better from this ex-perience. We feel like we are still moving in the right direction,

we just have some more work to do to get there.” Grant was named the 2009 American Southwest

Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Tigers back to the conference postseason tourna-ment for the first time in three years. Consider-ing the challenges Coach Grant faced when being named the program’s third head coach, the quick trip back to the postseason was a big surprise. ETBU was set to re-enter a rebuilding phase even before Grant was named head coach of the program on Aug. 2, 2007 -- less than two weeks before the Tigers were scheduled to report for preseason work-outs. The program’s all-time winningest coach, Trey Carlile, had resigned late in the summer to pursue another business opportunity, and the program was also losing a core group of players that had helped lead ETBU to three postsea-son appearances in four years. Enter Grant, whose first Tiger squad took it on the chin with a 4-13-2 record that included just three wins against ASC com-petition. The following year, after Grant welcomed his first recruiting class, ETBU improved to 7-10-0 overall with a roster that included seven freshmen starters through-out the season. The Tigers missed qualifying for the playoffs in 2008 by one game and went into the final day of the regular season with a shot at the postseason. Another strong recruiting

Buzz Sanders completed his third year at ETBU in 2010 after 35 years of administration and coaching at the high school level. In addition to coaching, he has worked as an intervention counselor, and assistant prin-cipal. Before coming to ETBU, he served as Head Counselor at Richard King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Prior to working at Corpus Christi ISD, Sanders was an assistant principal at Rockport-Fulton Junior High School in Aransas County and was a guidance counselor at Flour Bluff Junior High School. Coach Sanders was instrumental in estab-lishing the soccer program in the Coastal Bend and worked with soccer teams at Corpus Chris-ti Carroll as well as serving as head coach at Flour Bluff High School for 10 years. A number of his players have gone on to play beyond the high school level and many have continued to be involved with soccer to help develop players. This includes the present men’s and women’s coaches at Flour Bluff High School, as well as ETBU women’s head coach Paul Grant. Coach Sanders has been a music teacher for Aransas County ISD, Kenedy ISD and Edinburg. He was the choral director at Rockport-Fulton High School and an assistant band director at Kenedy High School. He was also a USSF and UIL referee and holds a United States Soccer Federation “D” State Badge as well as a National Soccer Coaches Association Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. Sanders received a B.S. and M.Ed. from Southwest Texas State University and his Mid-Management Certification from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He and his wife, Diana, currently live in Tyler, Texas.

year in 2009 had Grant believing his team could compete for the postseason, and those goals were realized as ETBU finished 10-7 overall and won nine of its 12 conference games. The Tigers finished fifth in the league standings and were knocked out of the ASC Tournament with a tight 1-0 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in the quarterfinals. Following the season, Grant was voted by his coaching peers as the conference’s Coach of the Year. Six of his play-ers in 2009 were named to the All-ASC team, including four who were recruited to ETBU by Grant himself. Prior to becoming head coach at ETBU, Grant had compiled a very impressive coaching resume at the high school level. He had spent the previous nine seasons at All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler, building both the boys and girls soccer programs into state powerhouses at the TAPPS level. With the boys program as head coach from 1999-2005, Grant led All Saints to two state championships and five consecutive district championships. Following the 2005 season, Grant took on another challenge -- starting and build-ing the girls soccer program. He wasted little time, as All Saints won back-to-back state championships the last two seasons -- including a 17-0 run in the 2007 high school season. In 2005, Grant was named the Tyler Telegraph All-East Texas Coach of the Year as well as being named TAPPS Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year the last two seasons. He was TAPPS Men’s Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003 and

2004. While at All Saints, Grant also served as girls softball coach in 2006 and was also an assistant boys and girls golf coach from 1999-2007. He was also the school’s Physical Education Coordinator. From 2004-07, Grant also served as a volunteer assistant soccer coach at Tyler Junior College, where he worked primarily with goalkeepers and also was a recruiter. From 1998-2007, Grant was also club director for East Texas Spirit Soccer Club, where he coached both boys and girls teams, organized tournament travel and prepared budgets. Grant has also been an experienced camp leader, running a Kicks for Kids camp from 2000-02 and working the SMU Soccer Camp from 1996-2000. He also served as an Olympic Development Program Goalkeeper Coach in 2001 as well as serving as All Saints Adventure Camp Director in 2002. Grant has also worked as a soccer referee, earning UIL Referee of the Year and Region II Referee of the Year honors in 1996. He holds a United States Soccer Federation “D” State Badge as well as a National Soccer College Association of America Regional Diploma. Grant played semi-pro soccer with the Lone Star Alliance from 1991-93 and also was a member of the Texas A&I Soccer Club from 1991-93. Grant earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1999. His wife, Meredith, is an assistant soccer coach and head softball coach at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas.

Cristine transferred to ETBU from Lon Morris College for the 2010 season and became the Tigers’ starting goalie following an injury to returning All-ASC keeper Tamara Carlisle in early September. She was more than capable of the job, however, starting 11 games and finishing with four shutouts. She had three straight shutouts late in September, all confer-ence wins, and was voted to the All-ASC team following the season. A former standout at Pine Tree High School in Longview, Cristine gives the Tigers an experienced option at what was a deep position on the team in 2010. Defensively and in the midfield is where Brittany has made her impact at ETBU, where she was one of just five players to start every game in 2009 as a sophomore. She made 16 starts as a fresh-man in 2008 and scored three goals. Danica has become one of the top players in the history of the program in her first three seasons at ETBU. A three-time All-ASC performer following another all-conference honor in 2010, Danica already ranks seventh all-time at ETBU in career goals (14) and sixth in assists (10). Eight of her 14 goals have been game-winners. She scored three goals with two assists this past season while starting 17 games, and she served as team captain as well. Danica has also been a standout in the classroom, with back-to-back ASC All-Academic honors that includes being named a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in the conference the last two years. The Tigers took a hit when 2009 All-ASC goalie Tamara Carlisle went down with a season-ending injury in early September last season. Luckily ETBU had some quality depth with transfer Cristine Aquino to fill in, but Carlisle’s loss was a big one because she was also expected to see some time at other positions as a sophomore. Tamara had a very solid fresh-man year, earning honorable mention All-ASC honors after starting 13 games in goal and finishing with 70 saves and a .814 save percentage. Her six shutouts in 2009 tied for the conference lead. She started the first 11 games of the season -- giving her 28 straight starts in her college career -- before being lost for the year due to injury. Lauren is a tough, technically-sound defensive player who provides a nice anchor for the ETBU defense. David Weaver completed his 10th year as Sports Information Director at East Texas Baptist University in 2009-2010. The 1995 graduate of Northwestern State University is responsible for public and media relations for the ETBU Athletic Department, covering 10 NCAA-sponsored sports. As S.I.D. Weaver is the official statistician for every sport at ETBU and also designs and writes media guides for all sports on campus. He also controls the content on the university’s athletics web site, at www.etbu.edu, and manages the sports information blog on the site. Weaver also facilitates the ETBU Athletics pages on Facebook and Twitter, which have become invaluable sources of media in relation to being about to get news out on the web quickly to fans of the Tigers. Tiger athletics

interviews and video clips can now also be found on the university’s official YouTube site. Before joining the staff at ETBU in June of 2000, Weaver was sports editor of the Marshall News Mes-senger in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He covered East Texas sports -- including ETBU -- for five years from 1996-2000 and earned three Associated Press Managing Editor Awards for his writing. Prior to his work at the News Messenger, Weaver was managing editor at The Hardin County News in Lumberton, Texas, a weekly publication of The Beaumont Enterprise. He accepted the position of ETBU’s S.I.D. and began working at the university on June 1, 2000, just a few months before the start of the Tigers’ first football season in 50 years. Over the past 10 years he has also worked in the broadcast booth with radio work for the Tiger football, basketball and softball teams at ETBU. Away from his duties at ETBU, David enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth base-ball and softball with his children. He also enjoys reading and writing in his spare time. David and his wife, Jeannie, live in Hallsville, Texas with their children: son Coby, and daughters Melody, Abby and Lily.

Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver was elected as the 12th President of East Texas Baptist University by the uni-versity Board of Trustees on Oct. 15, 2008. He officially became President on June 1, 2009, succeeding Dr. Bob E. Riley who retired after 17 years of service to ETBU.

Dr. Oliver was Vice President for Student Life at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, from 2005-2008. He had been employed in various posi-tions at Baylor for 16 years upon his election as President of ETBU. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Oliver is a graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He holds a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. Oliver earned his Doctor of Phi-losophy degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M as well. He is also a

licensed and ordained Baptist minister having served from October 2003 to May 2009 as the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Crawford, Texas. Dr. Oliver came to Baylor in April 1992 from Texas A&M University to serve as Director of Student Activities. In June 1999, he took on additional responsibilities as the Associate Dean for Campus Life. Then, in June 2001, Dr. Oliver was promoted to be the Dean for Student Develop-ment, a post he held until June 2005 when he was named Assistant Vice President for Student Life. For a year he served as Interim Vice President for Student Life before being named the Vice President for Student Life. Dr. Oliver has also served Baylor as a Visiting Professor in the Hankamer School of Business, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education, and Interim University Chaplain. He served in the United States Air Force stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in the late 1980’s. Before entering graduate school, he was a third-grade teacher in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Dr. Oliver’s wife, Susie, was an adjunct faculty member and full-time cheerleader coach at Baylor. Their daughter, Callie, graduated from high school in May 2010. “East Texas Baptist University, near the conclusion of its first century of service and at the beginning of a new century of faithfulness, is well positioned for increased excellence in all its endeavors. In doing so, the University will, by God’s grace, become an even brighter light on the hill to a world that is desperately in need,” said Dr. Oliver.

Academic instruction at East Texas Baptist University began in 1917 with the inaugural session of a two-year in-stitution known as College of Marshall. The campaign to launch the col-lege had begun in 1911 and was led by William Thomas Tardy, pastor of Marshall’s First Baptist Church. Tardy negotiated the purchase of 100 acres of the original K. M. Van Zandt family plantation for $25,000. Keeping 50 of the 100 acres on Van Zandt Hill in northwest Marshall, the college subdivided and sold the remaining property. Marshall’s citizens sub-scribed another $70,000, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas assumed control of the college, ap-propriating $40,000 for buildings and furnishings. The trustees applied for and received a charter from the State of Texas in 1912, and Thurman C. Gardner, an early day Baptist Train-ing Union leader, became the first president in 1913.

For the first building, Marshall Hall, contractors broke ground on July 5, 1915. Of neoclassical architecture and com-pleted in 1916, Marshall Hall crowned the highest point in Harrison County. The robust building was a self-contained educational facility with a ground floor gymnasium, main floor administrative offices, laboratories, and library, third floor classrooms, and a chapel/theatre on the top floor.

The first freshman class registered in 1917 under President Henry Eugene Watters (1916-1918). The college boasted a teaching faculty of nine members. By the academic year 1918-19, some 300 students were enrolled in either a junior college or an academy curriculum. With World War I raging, a student cavalry unit

drilled regularly on the college grounds.

New dormitories soon encircled the classic campus quadrangle. In 1924, Dr. Franklin S. Groner, the Secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, conveyed the Baptists’ commitment to assume the college debt if the Marshall Chamber of Commerce would supply $12,500 annually for five years, enabling it to remain open.

Leading the college during the trying days of The Great Depression, Dr. Franklin Groner (1928-42) assumed the presidency and instituted a permanent endowment program. In 1935, an additional

43 acres were purchased, including the land and buildings of the St. Joseph’s Boys Industrial Orphanage, some of which was converted to men’s housing. In 1938, Baptist layman and builder Fred Hale broke ground for Laura Groner Hall, a modern residence hall for women. A reduced replica of Mt. Vernon, the stunning structure stood complete in 1940, its austere construction having cost only $10,500.

World War II robbed the campus of its men and resources. By 1943, only 137 students remained. In 1944, the trustees, making perhaps the most important decision in the institu-tion’s history, asked the Baptist General Convention of Texas to elevate the college to four-year status and to change the name to East Texas Baptist College.

A former pastor of First Baptist Church, Midland, Texas, Dr. Harvey Daniel Bruce (1942-1960), the college’s ninth president, oversaw a vigorous postwar enrollment and building boom. Veterans arrived on campus, many bringing their families, and enrollment briefly surpassed 800. Prefabricated war surplus family housing was erected on the campus perimeter.

The college added Scarborough Chapel in 1948, which was built in the neo-Gothic style. Also added

were Feagin Hall, a new men’s residence facility; a cafeteria and student center; and additions to the women’s residence hall, which was renamed for Merle Bruce, wife of the college president. Two ornate, neo-classi-cal buildings were added in the 1950s, Sanderson Hall (now Craig Hall) to house the laboratory sci-ences departments, and Harvey Daniel Bruce Hall as the new library/admin-istrative complex. Keys Gymnasium was built in 1960. In 1961 a new wom-en’s residence hall, named after Evelyn Linebery, with its long portico and roomy plantation-style architecture, was completed.

Dr. Bruce labored to establish a liberal arts tradition, along with strong degree programs in Bible and religion. His administration’s crowning achievement came in 1957 when the Southern Association

of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation to East Texas Baptist College.

Under Dr. Howard C. Bennett as president (1960-76), the aca-demic program established enduring credibility. Dr. Bennett, the for-

mer pastor of First Baptist Church, Kilgore, oversaw construction of the new Howard C. Bennett Student Center in 1973.

Dr. Jerry Dawson (1976-85), who had been Graduate Dean at Southwest Texas State University, became the first professional educa-tor to lead the college. By 1982, the postwar “baby boom” peaked and enrollment stood at 920 students. A spacious new president’s home replaced the stately residence that Drs. Bruce and Bennett had occupied. After the opening of the Mamye Jarrett Library in 1979, H. D. Bruce Hall became avail-able for the Religion and Teacher Education depart-ments. Married students occupied several new brick

housing units. Charles Fry Hall for Men was opened. As age claimed some of the original col-lege buildings, the older men’s dormitory, build-ings of the old orphan-age, and various frame and prefabricated struc-tures were dismantled during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1984 the University Charter revision changed the institutional name to East Texas Baptist University. However, by 1985, enrollment gains had eroded.

During the interim presidency of Dr. Harvey Lewis (1985-86), the University met various deferred maintenance and oper-ating needs.

The former president of two other Baptist institutions from 1961 to 1986, Dr. Robert Craig (1986-1992) launched a building program of unprecedented proportions, including the Fred Hale Business Building in 1988-89. Other subsequent construction projects were the Jenna Guest Music Building, the Louise Rogers Spiritual Life Center, now known as the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center; major additions to the Bennett Student Center, construction of the Clifford Nelson Murphy Science Hall, and the Mabee Housing Complex.

The untimely death of Dr. Craig in March 1992, only two months prior to his announced retirement, was followed by the leadership of Dr. Bob E. Riley (1992-Present), who had been President of the Howard County Junior College District in Big Spring, Texas. Under Dr. Riley, the University experienced record student enrollments.

The campus continued to develop under President Riley’s leader-ship with the 1995 completion of the Dean Healthplex and Ornelas Gymnasium. Fall 1996 found the opening of The Joseph and Louise Ornelas Residential Complex and the renovation of Marshall Hall, which was completed in 1997. Meadows Hall, which houses the Murphy Instructional Technology Center and the Department of Mathematics was renovated and occupied beginning with the fall semester of 1999. The University Apartments opened in fall 2002, and the renovation of Scarborough Chapel into Scarborough Hall was com-

plete in January 2004.

KENT REEVESATHLETIC DIRECTORB.S.E., John Brown UniversityM.S.E., Arkansas State UniversityEntering his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally

stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a pro-gram that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for champion-

ships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic direc-tor. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a recent graduate of Baylor University.HEAD COACHES

ORNELAS GYMNASIUMOrnelas Gymnasium has served as the home for East Texas Baptist University’s volleyball and basketball teams since the facility was constructed in 1995. The construction was part of a dual project to expand from the existing athletic facility in Keys Gymnasium, which had served as the institution’s principal competition arena for decades. Included in the project along with the new gym itself was the Dean Healthplex, which was dedicated along with Ornelas Gym on Saturday, May 27, 2005, just in time for the first graduation ceremony to be held in the new facility. The 1,700-seat facility was built with a classic look of bowl-type seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes floor bleacher seats, reserved chairback and upper level general admission bleachers. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym on the west and Keys Gym on the east is Dean Healthplex. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean and opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym, the healthplex houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness, such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair-masters and both free and machine weightlifting equipment. The Dean Healthplex also in-cludes four racquetball courts. All Healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students.

TAYLOR FIELDTaylor Field is the home to ETBU’s softball program, which marched to the 2010 NCAA Division III national championship. The Tigers have had an unprecedented run of consistency in the ASC in softball, with 11 straight trips to the conference postseason tournament. During those 11 years ETBU has won five conference championships and six ASC East Division titles. The facility began as a gift from Earl and Louise Taylor and was constructed in time for ETBU’s first season of softball in 1998. The facility was upgraded in 2005 with a gift from Welby C. Edwards, with installation of a new two-story press box that also included a Lady Tiger locker room, brick dugouts and landscaping.Taylor Field’s dimensions make it a cozy park for hitters and pitchers alike. Distances to the foul poles down both lines is measured at 190 feet, with a distance of 210 to centerfield. The power alleys are 215 feet from home plate as well, making the majority of the facility a comfortable one for both ETBU and opposing pitchers. The softball team won ETBU’s first NCAA Division III national title in 2010, when the Tigers finished the season with eight straight wins in the NCAA Tournament and brought home the championship with a walk-off win over Linfield College on May 24, 2010 at the national championship tournament in Eau Claire, Wisc.

ORNELAS STADIUMOrnelas Stadium has provided East Texas Baptist University with a top-flight game-day facility for football since the Tigers’ program was resurrected in time for the 2000 season after a 50-year absence. The Ornelas family of Tyler provided a gift that kick-started the stadium construction late in 1999, and the stadium was literally carved from the East Texas earth in less than a year. It wasn’t quite ready for the Tigers’ first scheduled home game against McMurry in early September, but by the time the second home game came around -- against Austin College on Oct. 7, 2000 -- Ornelas Stadium was ready to become the home of the Tigers. The stadium hosted only day games until the 2009 season, when lights were added to the facility to provide ETBU the option of scheduling night games. The facility remains one of the shining landmarks on the northern end of the campus, with Cornish Field for soccer just to the north of the stadium and Taylor Field for softball located just across Van Zandt Street to the south. The stadium grandstand has a capacity of 3,000, with general admission and standing-room only available on two sloped hillsides on either side of the grand-stand.

WOODS FIELDWoods Field has been the home to East Texas Baptist University baseball since the program’s inception in the mid-1960s. The facility has received a number of upgrades over the last few years. The lat-est of the upgrades, and the most dramatic, was the installation of lights just prior to the 2008 season that allowed for the first nighttime baseball in the history of the program. The facility has also received more upgrades since 2006. These upgrades include a remodeling of the Tiger bullpen, as well as additions and improvements to the outdoor batting cages. In 2005, the old metal backstop and dugouts were torn down and replaced with red brick. The chain-link backstop, which had surrounded home plate for years, was replaced by a dark netting which provides safety while allowing for improved sight lines for fans in the bleachers. Woods Field, with a short porch in left, has long been recognized as a hit-ter-friendly park. The ballpark especially favors right-handed hitters, with the left-field wall sitting just 325 from home plate. The distance to center field is 400 feet, while the right-field fence is a more comfortable 335 feet from the batter’s box.

CORNISH FIELDETBU’s soccer field, which opened in 2002, was christened Cornish Field in 2007 follow-ing a gift for facility upgrade from Harold and Joyce Cornish of Marshall. The lighted field, which began construc-tion in 2000 and was open and ready for play to start the 2002 season, sits on the extreme northern edge of the ETBU campus adjacent to Ornelas Stadium, the Tigers’ football facil-ity. The improvement to the facility included installation of permanent bleachers, concrete walkways, a retaining wall that will allow fans to bring their own lawn chairs and enjoy the games, and a wrought iron decorative fence on the south side of the field as well as updated fencing around the entire field. The entrance is bricked with a decorative archway bearing the name of the donor. Opened in 2002, the facility is accessible by a road -- Baker Boulevard, courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baker -- that runs down the west side of Ornelas Stadium on the north end of campus. The soccer field runs east to west with bleachers to the south side of the field. The north side is used for team benches and scorers table. A platform over the scorers table is used for video. A large soccer scoreboard sits at the east end of the complex. Lights were added to the facility in the fall of 2005. The lights were purchased with a gift in honor of former Lady Tiger Brooke Adair, a 2000-03 four-year letterwinner at ETBU.

RICHARDSON, Texas --- The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA

Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American South-

west Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic As-sociation (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spread-ing across the 422,060 square miles of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement to conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference embodies a multidimensional mission aimed at creating an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competi-tion and activities for its conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create

an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2010-11 includes Con-cordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s champi-onships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas. Amy Carlton is commissioner and Greg Weghorst serves as Assistant Commissioner (Media Relations).

AMY CARLTONCOMMISSIONER

Amy Carlton was named Commissioner of the NCAA Division III affiliated American Southwest Conference on Feb. 8, 2007 by the ASC Council of Presidents after serving in an interim commissioner role since July 1, 2006. Carlton is the second full-time commissioner of the ASC following Fred Jacoby, who retired in June 2006 after guiding the ASC for 10 years as the league’s first commis-sioner (1996-2006). Carlton joined the ASC staff as Direc-tor of Media Relations in January 2002 and was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in May 2003. Carlton is one of 11 women who serve as commis-sioner of an NCAA Division III conference, guiding the largest conference among the group.

A native of Greencastle, Ind., Carlton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journal-ism from Franklin College (Ind.) in 1981 and completed graduate courses in athletic administration at Western Illinois University. Carlton spent over 20 years on college and university campuses, including 13-1/2 years in sports information operations at three NCAA Division I institutions. She joined the ASC staff after 10 years as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at the University of Michigan (1990-2000) and was Assistant Sports Information Direc-tor at Northern Illinois University (1989-90). Carlton was a graduate sports informa-tion intern at both Western Illinois (1987-88) and Michigan (1988-89). She began her career as assistant director of the news bureau at Franklin College, before moving to Manchester College (Ind.) where she was Director of News and Sports Information for five years (1982-87). Carlton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athlet-ics (NACDA), National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADII-IAA) and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). She is a member of the Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee of the Division III Conference Commissioners Association. Carlton and husband Chuck, a writer in the Dallas Morning News sports depart-ment, have a daughter, Taylor, and reside in southeastern Denton County.

GREG WEGHORSTASSISTANT COMMISSIONER - MEDIA RELATIONS

Greg Weghorst serves as the Assistant Commissioner for the American Southwest Conference, a title assumed on July 1, 2010. Weghorst has primary responsibility for media relations and publicity with additional administra-tive assignments for championships, ASC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and operations. Since joining the ASC staff in August 2006, Weghorst has coordinated media information and completed a successful redesign and launch of the www.ASCsports.org website with Internet Consulting Services (ICS). He has directed the conference-wide “Make a Change in 14 Days” campaign, helping the member’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committees raise nearly $28,000 to benefit local com-

munity organizations in the four years of the loose change collection effort. Weghorst has served as tournament director for the ASC Men’s and Women’s Golf and Softball Championships and the First Pitch Softball Tournament; supervised the conference awards programs; and supervised the design and production of the annual ASC Champion T-shirt program. Weghorst is the fifth media relations director of the ASC. He oversees the conference’s media relations operation, including compilation of league statistics and standings and NCAA reports, production of the ASC weekly sport reports, maintain-ing the ASC website and assisting with conference issues and tournament administra-tion. A sports writer with the Temple Daily Telegram prior to coming to the ASC, Weghorst provided coverage of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Central Texas Blackhawks/Marshals of the North American Hockey League and Temple-area high schools. He was part of the coverage team for the 2005 EV1.net Houston Bowl and the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and also contributed to the magazine Total Texas Baseball. Weghorst, a native of Waco, Texas, is a 2003 graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications/journalism. While an undergradu-ate, he was a reporter in features, sports and personality profiles at The Bells and worked as a disc jockey for KBDE-FM in Waco. Weghorst was a student intern in the UMHB Sports Information Office under Jon Wallin and served on the tournament staff for the 2000 PGA MasterCard Colonial tournament. Weghorst is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators (NADIIIAA). He and his wife, Casey, and their daughter, Tatum, reside in Frisco, Texas
