This ice study is from my IceFallEssay and depicts a surrealistic, natural setting from my series"Upper DelawareRiver". IceFallfeatures anincredible 16 foot icestructure that literally ends witha "frozen splash"against the
ground.
This magnificent eye-catching formation was found alongthe Upper Delaware River of thewestern Catskills, a nationalprotected area by the Dept. of theInterior. "IceFall"is a 10x8" gelatinsilver print on double weight glossyfiber paper that was handmade in atraditional wet darkroom.
Having grown up in "Tornado
Alley" I have been fascinated sincechildhood with natural phenomena, including the austere, stately beautyof ice. It was my good fortune thatduring the Winter Olympics inVancouver that a west coastcollector found favor with thisimage to add to his collection
of winter landscapes.

As such these atmospheric attributescontinue to lure collectors to herPennsylvania studio asking for more ofwhat could be coined as "diffusionism", a
soft-focus technique Jan employs that isreminiscent of, yet entirely different than,"pointillism". In her own words, "I do notuse models as many flower painters do.Instead, I must recall from memory theirbeauty. When I paint still life flowers, Ienter the world of my garden. Of course,my garden is alive and active in thesummer but in the winter I cannot put myhand into the soil and so must apply it tocanvas instead.
