THE 2009 OUTLOOK

QUARTERBACK

Called upon to replace starter Alex Relph in the first quar-ter of the season opener, junior Greg Sullivan (6-1, 204) quickly established himself as a major contributor to the Raider offense.

Sullivan, who was selected second team all-Patriot League, carried 172 times for 898 yards and seven touch-downs, while connecting on 125-of-206 passes for 1,695 yards and 12 touchdowns. His rushing yardage was the most ever by a Colgate quarterback in a season.

Sullivan finished third on the team in rushing and fifth in the Patriot League with 74.8 yards per game. He had two games over 100 yards rushing ripping off 136 against Dartmouth and 107 vs. Fordham.

Sophomores Steve Rizzo (6-1, 209) and Randall Nixon (6-2, 215) will be vying for the backup role in 2009.

TAILBACK

Despite the loss of Colgate’s and the Patriot League’s all-time leading rusher Jordan Scott, the Raider running game shouldn’t miss a beat in 2009. Returning is Patriot League Rookie of the Year Nate Eachus (5-10, 206), who was the team’s second leading rusher with 932 yards on 172 carries and 10 touchdowns. He was fourth in the league in rushing with 77.7 yards per game, after moving from linebacker to the backfield in the seventh game of the season.

Eachus finished the season with three games over 100 yards rushing and two over 200 yards, including the eighth highest single-game performance in school history with 241 yards in just over two quarters against Cornell.

Adding depth in the backfield are sophomores Noah Jack-son (5-8, 195) and Jordan McCord (5-10, 197). McCord carried 33 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns, while Jackson gained 62 yards on nine carries in his rook-ie season. Jackson’s status for the fall will depend on his recovery from a fractured, dislocated ankle during spring ball. Also in contention is senior Mark Colon (6-0, 214), who moved into the backfield last season from linebacker.

FULLBACK

Steady and reliable Eric Tutpa, the primary blocker in Colgate’s rushing game, leaves an important position to be filled in 2009. The battle is between several players with limited experience. Junior Gigi Cadet (5-11, 227) comes out of spring ball as the leading candidate to take over the starting role. Another player who could appear at fullback on occasion is senior tight end Adrien Schriefer (6-2, 220). Several other players will add depth: sopho-more Hunter Steffien (6-2, 225), junior Colin Flynn (6-1,

237), junior Jon Pozerycki (6-0, 226), sophomore Adam Shaprio (5-10, 218) and senior Tyler Spencer (6-1, 234).

WIDE RECEIVER

The Raiders will have a strong one-two punch at wide receiver. All-America candidate Pat Simonds (6-6, 223) proved to be a valuable offensive threat in 2008. The senior was named Colgate’s offensive MVP and first team all-Patriot League. He was the leading receiver with 65 catches for 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns.

Simonds became only the fifth player in school history to go over 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He averaged 5.42 catches per game and 94.7 yards per outing.

He comes into his final season tied for 10th in career re-ceptions (105) and eighth in receiving yardage (1,785).

Junior Doug Rosnick (6-2, 220) is the other half of the duo. Last year, he caught 23 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown.

Adding depth is junior Charles Babb (5-11, 212), senior Ty Henry (6-1, 178) and senior Manny Torres (6-0, 188), who missed the 2008 season with injuries.

TIGHT ENDColgate returns two experienced tight ends this fall. Senior Adrien Schriefer (6-2, 220) and junior Nick Cvetic (6-5, 249).

Both players are excellent blockers, who are instrumen-tal in Colgate’s option attack. Last season, Schreifer had four catches for 49 yards and three touchdowns, includ-ing the winning TD against Coastal Carolina on the final play of the game.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Colgate lost several of its fixtures on the offensive line including consenus All-America tackle Nick Hennessey along with all-league performers Steve Jonas at tackle and Rich Rosabella at guard. Also gone is center Justin Snyder. This calls for a major overhaul across Colgate’s offensive line.

The lone starter returning is left guard Zach Posey (6-2, 280), who has three years of starting experience. Com-ing out of spring ball senior Rob Budny (6-2, 272) is slated for the right guard, while sophomore Brian Mer-rifield (6-2, 270) and senior Ryan Gross (6-3, 276) will take over at tackle. Sophomore Kevin Morgan (6-0, 281) will be the center.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The most experienced group on the Raider defense, in terms of both career starts and number of seniors, is the defensive line where three projected starters have com-bined to start 56 career games.

The leaders of the “D” line are senior defensive end Austin Douglas (6-4, 248) and senior nose tackle Paul Mancuso (6-2, 287) - both second team all-Patriot League in 2008.

Douglas, who had off-season shoulder surgery, won Colgate’s Unsung Hero Award last fall. He started all 12 games making 45 tackles including six quarterback sacks. Mancuso has 26 games of starting experience. Last sea-son he made 28 tackles with 5.5 TFL and three quarter-back sacks.

The rush end position appears to go to junior Lamont Sonds (6-2, 240). He is coming off a strong spring per-formance with excellent pass rushing skills. He will be backup by senior Juliues Barlay (6-1, 243).

The starting defensive tackle slot will have veteran Carl-ton Walker (6-0, 264). The senior led the team with 10 tackles for loss, while making 21 tackles and four quar-terback sacks. Senior Brendan Buglione (6-3, 274) will provide depth at the nose and defensive tackle positions.

Other players who will competed for playing time are sophomore Mike Riccione (6-1, 258) and junior FrankVittorini (6-1, 242) at defensive end.

LINEBACKER

The Raiders should have some solid depth at linebacker led by second team all-Patriot League linebacker Greg Hadley (5-11, 228). Hadley will be in the starting lineup for his third straight season. Last fall, he led the team in tackling with 80.

There is three-way competition for the other inside line-backer position between speedy senior Garrington Spence (5-11, 208), sophomore Mike Carbone (6-0, 209) and junior Chris DiMassa (6-1, 221). DiMassa played in the first three games last fall before injuries put out for the remainder of the season, while Carbone started all 12 games.

Zach Smith (6-2, 226), who had a solid spring practice, appears to be the starting outside linebacker. Last fall, he made a move to linebacker from tight end, and was very productive. In limited time on the field, he made six quarterback sacks, two fumbles forced and one fumble recovery.

Other linebackers who will be counted upon are sophomore Brian Provost (6-2, 210), junior Marcus Hudnell (6-3, 206) and sophomore Adam Lock (6-2, 205).

SECONDARY

The secondary will have plenty of experience in the lineup led by senior cornerback Wayne Moten (5-8, 165), who was Colgate’s defensive MVP and first team all-Patriot League last fall. Moten had a team-high three intercep-tions and 36 tackles.

Other starters back are strong safety Uzi Idah (5-11, 205) and free safeties Mike Barry (6-1, 198) and Vinnie Nicosia (6-0, 207). Idah, a senior, started all 12 games last fall, and finished as Colgate’s second leading tackler with 62, while Barry, a junior, played in seven games with four starts while injuries kept him out of the lineup for four games, and Nicosia, a sophomore, played in all 12 games with two starts.

Kenny McKenzie (5-9, 170) will take over at one corner-back, after moving to defense from running back, with junior Coree Moses (6-0, 171) backing him up.

Junior Gary Marshall (5-10, 178) will move from corner-back to strong safety, and should be the Raiders’ fifth back in the nickel package. Senior Will Griffin (5-10, 177) adds depth at the corner.

SPECIAL TEAMSKicking and punting game will be a battle of first-year players - Evan Colborne, Evan Goldszak, Trevor Lawler and Andy Heagle.
