MARK JAMESMark James is entering his third year as head coach of Sonoma State’s cross country team in 2009. After a promising 2008 season, the Seawolves look forward to building on their success as they enter the new campaign.

A collegiate and professional athlete, James arrived at Sonoma State with impressive cre-dentials. A runner and swimmer at El Molino and Montgomery High in the early 1980s, James went on to compete as a swimmer at Santa Rosa Junior College and UC Santa Cruz. While at UC Santa Cruz, James was also active with the collegiate cycling team, a skill he would put to good use over the next decade as a competitive triathlete.

A ten-time finisher of the prestigious Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (1992-2001), James is a two-time champion of the Maui Ironman and he has completed the Boston Marathon twice. He also has experience in the armed forces as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Special Forces SEAL Team II and the Navy Pentathlon team.

James also coached swimming and cross country at El Molino High School.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establish-ment in December 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Additionally, California State University, Monterey Bay has begun its provisional status as a CCAA member. In 2006, Humboldt State departed from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and joined the CCAA

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and wom-en’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contest-ed in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 148 NCAA Championships (100 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a num-ber of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State North-ridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
