Sonoma State Cross Country

4

Mark JamesHead Coach

Mark James returns for his fourth season as head coach of Sonoma State’s cross country team in 2009.

With the infusion of talented young student-athletes, the future is bright for the Seawolf cross country program. Despite some injuries down the stretch in 2009, the team finished ninth in the CCAA for the second consecutive year.

One place the Seawolves are second-to-none is in the classroom. The squad placed an as-tounding nine student-athletes on the CCAA All-Academic list, which tied UC San Diego for the most honorees on a cross country team. Freshman Rachel Borg was also named to the USTF-CCCA All-Academic team for her hard work in the classroom.

A collegiate and professional athlete, James arrived at Sonoma State with impressive credentials. A runner and swimmer at El Molino and Montgomery High in the early 1980s, James went on to compete as a swimmer at Santa Rosa Junior College and UC Santa Cruz. While at UC Santa Cruz, James was also active with the collegiate cycling team, a skill he would put to good use over the next decade as a competitive triathlete.

A ten-time finisher of the prestigious Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (1992-2001), James is a two-time champion of the Maui Ironman and he has completed the Boston Marathon twice. He also has experience in the armed forces as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Special Forces SEAL Team II and the Navy Pentathlon team. Prior to joining Sonoma State, James also coached swimming and cross country at El Molino High School.

Chandra FarnhamAssistant Coach

Chandra Farnham is in her second year as assistant coach for the women’s cross country team at Sonoma State University.

Farnham is a 2006 graduate of Sonoma State, where she competed in both cross country and track and field. She is the most recent cross country athlete to garner all-west region from So-noma State, accomplishing the feat in 2003. Chandra also works for Fleet Feet sports in Santa Rosa as their triathlon and 10k coach.

The CALIFORNIACOLLEGIATEATHLETICASSOCIATION(CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful inter-collegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contest-ed in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball com-prise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (101 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Divi-sion II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
