2010 AUM Lady Senators Outlook For the third time in its young programs history, the Auburn Uni-versity at Montgomery women’s soccer team advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2009. Expectations for the 2010 season are high and under the director of first-year head coach Jamey Newsome, a return trip to the Tournament is expected. “It is a goal of ours to exceed what last year’s team was able to ac-complish,” said Newsome. “Hope (Handley) Clark did a wonderful job putting this team together, so I certainly inherited a very skilled group. We have a lot of leaders on this team and the work ethic of these student-athletes has been phenomenal. We have some high goals for ourselves this upcoming season.”

Ranked 13th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the 2010 Lady Senators return 18 players from last season’s 15-5-2 squad. Leading the returners are senior goalkeeper Daisy Burnfield, senior forward Amber Elam, senior defender Christine DeVito, sophomore defender Dixie Robinson and sophomore midfielder Helga Franklinsdottir, all of whom were first-team All-SSAC selections last season. “The team recently voted Daisy and Amber as Team Captains and they are very deserving of that honor,” added Newsome. “They, along with Christine DeVito, have really been great leaders to our team so far. They are all very encouraging vocally and help push their teammates. Their leadership is an invaluable attribute to a team.” Burnfield was selected the SSAC’s Newcomer of the Year and finished her first season with the Lady Senators with 99 saves, a total good for fourth in the conference. Burnfield allowed less than a goal per match, while logging better than 1,900 minutes in goal. Providing depth in goal will be sophomores Chelsea Heinen and Kelsey Halbert, as well as sophomore newcomer Margret Ingthorsdottir. Elam anchors the forward position after pacing the Lady Senators in

goals (16), assists (11) and points (43) last season. Elam, a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, also led the team with 133 shots, including a team-leading 74 on goal. Senior Tschana Wade and junior second-team All-SSAC selection Kristen Mitchell also return after scoring 12 goals each in 2009, while sophomore Margret Albertsdottir added five goals and five assists. Junior Erica Padula will provide another scoring option, after scoring three goals in just six games during an injury-shortened sophomore season. On defense, DeVito, also a NSCAA second-team All American, and Robinson led a unit that allowed just 22 goals during the 2009 season. In addition, AUM limited its opponents to only 234 shots, compared to 461 for its offense. Sophomore Inga Dis Juliusdottir, who earned second-team all-conference honors last season also returns, while juniors Heather Welch and K.C. Hewitt, as well as sophomore Asta Fridriksdot-tir will provide depth and leadership at the defender position. Freshman Susan Lotyczweski is a talented freshman from Sharpsburg, Ga., who will also compete for playing time. Franklinsdottir leads a talented group of midfielders, which also includes sophomore returners Alexandra Tomasdottir, Kristin Karlsdottir and Hallie Halbert, and junior transfer Jana Yates. Franklinsdottir was tied for fourth on the team in points last season, scoring 15 points on seven goals and one assist. Tomasdottir posted eight points, including four assists, while Karlsdottir appeared in 11 games last season. Halbert appeared in four games for AUM in 2009, but did not record statistics. Newsome also praised the trio of new-comers (Ingthorsdottir, Lotyczweski and Yates), each of whom bring an added dimension to the Lady Senators. “Jana Yates is a transfer from Middle Georgia College and at this point looks like she is going to find a spot in the starting line-up,” Newsome said. “She is a skilled player with a lot of quickness and seems to be blending in with the team very well. Susan Lotyczweski is a true freshman who has also worked her way into a potential starting spot and has the tools to be an impact player for us. Margret Ingthorsdottir is a talented goalkeeper, who will have the luxury of learning behind Daisy Burnfield for a year.”

Jamey Newsome is entering his inaugural season as the head coach of the Auburn Montgom-ery women’s soccer program. In light of the coaching change, Newsome has high hopes for the upcoming season as he will try to add to the success the Lady Senators enjoyed last season. “Coach Newsome has been hired to lead our women’s soccer program to the next level of achievement. Jamey has extensive experience and contacts within the southeast regional club setting. It was important that AUM continue the focus on the development of the total person within our women’s soccer program and I am confident we have found that individual in Coach Newsome,” said Athletic Director Steve Crotz. “Throughout his 15 years of coaching experi-ence, he has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field of competition. It was important to build on our recent success in the women’s soccer program,

while maintaining the high academic standards and community involvement expectations for our program. I am confident that Coach Newsome is the perfect fit to guide our program to the next level.” Prior to being named the fifth head coach of the women’s soccer team, Newsome was most recently at Georgia Southern University where he has spent three years as an assistant coach for the women’s team. While at GSU, Newsome assisted the head coach in vari-ous areas of coaching, recruiting and video analysis. Newsome began his collegiate coaching experience in 1999 as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where they finished 12-3-3 and were able to obtain the #16 rank nationally. While at Upstate, Newsome was primarily involved in recruiting, player training and scheduling. Newsome has also been involved with the Coweta Cannons Soccer Club in Newnan, Ga., as the Technical Director from 2001-03 and the Director of Coaching from ‘03-’04. Most recently, from ‘05-’07, he was the Assistant Director of the Darlington School Soc-cer Academy of Rome, Ga., where his duties included training, marketing, event planning and monitoring boarding students. Since 2006, Newsome has been involved with the Olympic Development Program in the development of Georgia’s rising soccer talent through the Georgia State Soccer Association. He also currently holds the United States Soccer Federation “B” License and is a USSF “D & E” Coaching License Instructor. A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Newsome played collegiate soccer at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. There he was a four year starter and received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1997. Newsome’s head coaching experience began 1997, when he was the boys’ varsity soccer coach at Enka High School in Ashville, N.C. After a year he became the boy’s and girl’s varsity soccer coach at Madison High School in Marshall, N.C. where he remained until 1999. Newsome is married to the former Jennifer Schommer, and the couple has two daughters, Mary Ryan and Leah, and a cat, Moe.

2010 LADY SENATORS SOCCER

Led by the goal-scoring trio of Amber Elam, Tschana Wade and Kristin Mitchell, the Lady Senators finished the season with an overall record of 15-5-2, including an impressive 10-1 home record. More importantly, Auburn Montgomery returned to the NAIA National Tourna-ment for the third time in the brief history of its women’s soccer program. Despite being voted fourth in the SSAC preseason poll, the Lady Senators started out quickly, winning six of their first seven games with the lone loss coming to No. 5 Martin Methodist. As a result of the hot start, AUM climbed to 18th in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. The Lady Senators dropped their next two decisions, including a loss to No. 4 Lee University, but was able to get back on track quickly, as they posted a 6-0-1 record in their next seven matches. The seven-match stretch was highlighted by an 8-0 win over Southern Wesleyan and 10-0 defeat of Columbia College. AUM had its streak snapped by the nation’s top team, Lindsey Wilson, despite holding the Blue Raiders scoreless through the first 100 minutes. However, two minutes into double overtime, Lindsey Wilson scored the game-winning goal. Despite the loss, AUM climbed in the Coaches’ Poll to No. 15. The Lady Senators finished the regular season with an overall record 12-4-1, including a conference record of 5-2-1 which was good for second

place in the SSAC. The SSAC Tournament began with a 4-0 victory over Brewton-Parker, followed by a 2-0 defeat of Faulkner. In the SSAC Tournament Championship match, AUM faced a familiar foe in Lee. The two teams battled to a score-less tie through regulation and two overtime periods, before Lee won the match on penalty kicks, 3-1, to claim the title. AUM accepted an invitation to play in the NAIA National Tournament, where they defeated Embry-Riddle in the opening round by a score of 5-3. The season was brought to a close in the second round as they were defeated 2-0 by California Baptist University. Postseason honors abound for the Lady Senators as eight players received conference and national recognition. Five players received SSAC All-Conference first-team honor, including Daisy Burn-field, Christine DeVito, Amber Elam, Helga Franklinsdottir and Dixie Robinson. Burnfield was also selected the SSAC Newcomer of the Year. Inga Dis Juliusdottir and Kristin Mitchell were both named to the SSAC All-Conference second-team. Jennifer Davis was named to both the Musco Lighting Champion of Character Team and SSAC All-Academic Team. Other AUM players to make the SSAC All-Academic Team included Elam, K.C. Hewitt and Aindrea McHugh. Davis and McHugh were also named Daktronics NAIA Academic All-Americans. DeVito was recognized at the national level, as she earned NAIA third-team All-Ameri-can honors, while Elam, Franklinsdottir and Burnfield were named honorable mention All-Americans.

Southern States Athletic Conference and NAIA

The 2010-11 academic year will mark the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Ala-bama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Inter-collegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). Finally in 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence, and qual-ity that appropriately represents its 16 member institutions.Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed na-tional titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up.

Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 18 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national champion-ship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas, is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow insti-tutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on August 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-ath-letes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leader-ship and sportsmanship the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.

ChancellorJohn VeresAuburn University at Montgomery, 1976

Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his Bache-lor and Master of Psychology in 1976 and 1978, respectively, and has worked for over 30 years with the university. Veres has been serving as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006 by former Auburn University President Ed Richardson. “I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have to opportunity to serve the university as chancellor” says Veres.

Veres received his Ph. D in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resources man-agement (HRM) topics, including over 40 articles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports, and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organizations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure valid-ity, and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as Special Master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. He has long been involved in community affairs. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, and Seton Haven. Veres also serves on the Governor’s Commission for Action in Alabama’s Black Belt, and as technical consultant to the Alabama Commission on Government Account-ability. Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children–Erin, John and Olivia–and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

Steve Crotz is entering his third year as full-time Athletic Director at Auburn Montgomery after serv-ing two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. In his current capacity, Crotz has worked with AUM Administration to inaugurate a softball program, as well as to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. “Under his leadership, private contributions have nearly doubled those collected the last year we had a full-time athletic director in place,” says Chancellor John Veres. “As we find ourselves in troubling

economic times, his combination of commitment to excellence and financial acumen will serve us well.” Crotz was no stranger to AUM before serving as athletic director. For 12 seasons, Crotz served as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference champi-onships, two conference tournament titles, and his teams advanced to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-2000 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, and in October 2009 was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz received his Bachelors degree in Education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his Master degree in Secondary Education from Missouri-St. Loius in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two chil-dren, Kelsey and Jacob.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYAuburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-grant-ing institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall

AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERYof 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Educa-tion offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and most recently in 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association.

Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford.

A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1At Auburn Montgomery you won’t spend your freshman year in classes filled with 300 of your peers. Our classes are deliberately kept small (an average of 20 students), giving you more personal attention and allowing your professors to get to know you.

Montgomery, AlabamaMontgomery is at once a friendly southern city of grace and charm and a dynamic leader for economic growth and strength in the Southeast. Historic homes rest in peaceful repose next to tow-ering modern structures of glass and steel with perfect harmony. Lush city parks boasting world-class sports facilities are nestled just a short hop from a network of roads, rails and runways that transport people and goods throughout the country. Montgomery

really does have something for everyone. As Alabama’s Capital City, Montgomery is the seat of state gov-ernment and the catalyst for deci-sions that are far-reaching, not just when the legisla-ture is in session, but throughout the year. People from throughout the state and even the nation come here to meet with lawmakers and present their idea or lobby their position, hoping to influence the

direction of progress in the coming years. In addition to its turnkey position in governmental affairs, Montgomery holds a unique position in concerns of military training, technology, defense and education as the location of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Maxwell Air Force Base is the home of Air University, one of the military’s premiere educa-tional facilities. Officers from all branches of the armed forces attend classes here. Gunter is the location of the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG), which provides technical and customer service support as well as acquisition and program management oversight of over 160 Combat Support Information Technology (IT) systems. The ELSG also manages the Air Force standard desktop environment, and serves as the USAF lead for software program management under the auspices of the Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative. Montgomery is a city of vast economic diversity, with state government, the military, regional government, wholesale and retail trade, agricultural support and industry providing a well-balanced economic environment. The city’s role as a regional trade center is firmly established, serving as a wholesaling and

distribution gateway to the Southeast in addition to the 22-county central Alabama area. In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyundai would locate its first United States automobile manufacturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-square-foot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyun-dai’s first North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physi-cians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers, and more. Additionally, there are many walk-in clinics that offer general medicine and private practice physician offices with services ranging from family practice to internal medicine and ophthalmology. Montgomery and surrounding area veterans also are served by the VA Medical Center.

Things to See & Do Montgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activi-ties for people of all ages and interests. The city has been dubbed the “birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights.” It was the first capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the tele-gram was sent that started battle in the war Between the States. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the

National Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confed-erate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum provides a glimpse into this important event that shaped the destiny of

Montgomery, Alabamaa nation, along with the new Children’s Annex to the museum, which provides a background on segregation through an interac-tive “time machine” exhibit. Visitors also should stop at the new Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by famed architect Maya Lin. The Center, operated by the South-ern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-the-art exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities, and a sec-tion dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an exten-sive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a sym-phony orchestra, and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgom-ery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from five different conti-nents, including a brand new African Elephant exhibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Ala-bama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of in-formation. Children will be especially delighted by the Archives’

“Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, cos-tumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattle-men’s Associa-tion “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cowboy culture and live-stock production.

Shopping is also a popular pastime. Montgomery has unique boutiques tucked away into historic districts like Old Clo-verdale and the Mulberry District,

as well as first class shopping malls and centers. Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at East-Chase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants.

And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim.

Sports & Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Baseball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 mil-lion baseball stadium opened in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riv-erfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks & Recreation Department oper-ates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such ac-tivities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fitness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a Planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and college baseball games, including the annual NCAA Division II college baseball championship. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The Trail is recognized as one of the finest golf experiences anywhere.
